Jenny Erpenbeck, Opowieść o starym dziecku (Geschichte vom alten Kind)

Dziewczynka jednak wkrótce zaczyna chorować, co wynosi ją poza margines klasy, a potem szkoły, i przenosi do publicznego szpitala, gdzie zagadka jej tożsamości zostaje rozwiązana.

Możliwe wątki interpretacyjne

Wielu krytyków dostrzega w tej powieści portret wyjątkowo trudnego dojrzewania i związanej z nim samotności i poczucia dyskomfortu we własnym ciele.

A Debut Novel of Considerable Difficulty

Everyone raves about Jenny Erpenbeck's work, many expect her to become the next Literary Nobel Prize winner. I picked up her book without any particular knowledge and put it down without much enthusiasm. Perhaps because it was a debut, or perhaps the book simply proved too difficult for me.

Jenny Erpenbeck

Erpenbeck was born in East Berlin in 1967. After graduating, she worked primarily as an opera director and has been writing since the 1990s. In 2024, her novel Kairos, translated into English from German, won the International Booker Prize. To date (August 2026), four novels, three collections of short stories, two collections of essays, and four plays have been published. Her debut novella, The Old Child, was published by Znak Publishing House in the litera nova series this year, translated by Eliza Borg, and very prettily I must say.

Outsider Heroine

One day, a lonely girl arrives at the children's shelter, clutching a metal bucket. She is fat and awkward, with a round face, and nothing is known about her parents or past. The nameless heroine struggles to fit in, so she tries to be as invisible as possible and remain at the bottom of the class ladder, because that's where she feels safe. Over time, her taciturnity and withdrawn nature begin to be mistaken by the children for loyalty and devotion, so some class bullies rely on her discretion. However, the girl soon becomes ill, which pushes her beyond the margins of the class, and then the school, and she is transferred to a public hospital, where the mystery of her identity is solved.

Possible Interpretive Themes

Many critics see this novel as a portrait of exceptionally difficult adolescence and the loneliness and discomfort associated with it. The protagonist flees adulthood under the influence of an unknown trauma, refusing to confront her life and body. For others, it is a parable about memory and life in the GDR, with its amnesia and submission to authority. The orphanage, with its rules, would be an oppressive society where it's best to remain invisible to avoid attracting unwanted attention. The novella certainly contains more than just the story of a lonely girl. However, neither of these readings was a logical conclusion for me. The novella proved too dense (little dialogue, plenty of precise yet brief descriptions), with a surprising but illogical ending, and left me puzzled and confused. Furthermore, I'll soon forget about this book. Perhaps it's worth trying another work by such a widely praised writer?

My rating: 4/10.

Najnowsze dzieło pisarza to kawał solidnej literatury, a jednocześnie głęboki, smutny portret ludzkiego życia. Nagroda wydaje się ze wszech miar zasłużona.

David Szalay

Moja ocena: 9/10.

We have the body, where is the soul?

I picked up Szalay's book on Friday afternoon, and the Booker Prize-winning novel, Flesh, is less than 400 pages long. By Saturday morning, it was over, and only because my tired eyes couldn't handle any more text after 350 pages. The writer's latest work is a solid piece of literature and, at the same time, a profound, sad portrait of human life. The award seems thoroughly deserved.

David Szalay

Flesh is the writer's sixth book, the first to win the Booker Prize, but also the second to be nominated for it – the first was All That Man Is in 2016. Szalay was born in 1974 in Canada to a Hungarian father and a Canadian mother. He has lived in Beirut, London, Brussels, and Pécs, Hungary, and currently resides in Vienna.

Snapshots of Life

Flesh is the story of Hungarian-born István, whom we meet at the age of 15, coming of age. He moves with his mother to a new neighbourhood where he doesn't have many friends. His mother asks him to help their neighbour to carry her groceries, which in turn leads to an affair initiated by the woman. However, when István confesses his love and begins to commit, the 42-year-old breaks up with him, and the boy finds himself in deep trouble. We then follow him during his military service in the Middle East, where he distinguishes himself for his courage and receives a medal for it, but he refuses to continue this career path. He then travels to England, where he works as a security guard in shady clubs, but one night he saves the life of a wealthy man, who helps him find a better job. István begins an affair with another employer's wife, and after her husband’s death, he marries her, achieving a high social position and managing his own investments with the help of his wife's capital. However, Helen's son from her first marriage, Thomas, hates him because he discovered his mother's affair as a child and believes the Hungarian only cares about her fortune. This initial rift will drastically change István's life.

The Protagonist's Passivity

Szalay's novel is incredibly sensual, and one of its main themes is sex (and its truly good, natural, and unoffensive descriptions). We experience István's sexual initiation with a mature woman, followed by subsequent relationships, romances, and intercourses. Over time, the impression develops that the man has relatively little influence over his own life, that it happens to him, and he only passively follows it. He is unable to help his son when he experiences bullying at school, and he reacts to problems with his wife's older son with aggression or withdrawal. He also discovers his commitment and love for his wife too late, unaware of the scale of his feelings. However, in the hour of trial, at a turning point in his life, István makes a moral decision – he decides to save the life of Thomas, who has just overdosed on drugs, even though it means the loss of his fortune and a significant reduction in his quality of life. This surprised me; I didn't expect it from the main character at all. I don't know if István's disconnection from his emotions, functioning largely without reflection, on a wave of inertia, explains the title. We have human flesh focused on satisfying its physical needs and urges, accepting what happens to it, yet having little willpower to give its life a more consistent or defined direction. It accepts changes passively, with detachment, stoic, but without attempting to influence the situation.

Can't a cliché be true?

The narrative, although chronological, skips large chunks of time, showing fragments of István's life but not providing a complete picture. The author repeatedly employs the tactic of leaving the reader in suspense during the most dramatic events, only to learn their consequences much later, in retrospect, stripped of the intense drama that must have accompanied them immediately after they occurred. This leaves me with the impression that the novel has captured a certain obvious truth about life – a collection of situations that define us to some extent, opportunities taken or squandered. It sounds cliché, but what else is our life? I really enjoyed the novel, and considering the number of books I currently read, it felt fresh and certainly engaging. I finished reading it with that "hmmm" I love.

My rating: 9/10.

Abdulrazak Gurnah, Raj (Paradise)

Kłopoty w raju

Po książkę zanzibarskiego pisarza Abdulrazaka Gurnaha sięgnęłam nieprzygotowana. Stała sobie na bibliotecznej półce i kusiła piękną okładką. „O, Poznańskie,” pomyślałam, a potem, „O, Nobel!

Moja ocena: 8/10.

Trouble in Paradise

I reached for the book by Zanzibarian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah unprepared. It was sitting on the library shelf and tempted me with its beautiful cover. "Oh, Poznańskie Publihing House," I thought, and then, "Oh, Nobel Prize! I'll take it!" Lately, my book choices have been based on recommendations I've read, and at least you know what to expect. In this case, I didn't even read the description on the back cover, and it was hard for me to get into Yusuf's story at the beginning. I read the first 50 pages for almost a week, and then I finished the book over the weekend (the whole thing is 300 pages, so it's not a big reading challenge).

Abdulrazak Gurnah – unknown literary power

Gurnah himself is an interesting character. Born in 1948 in the Sultanate of Zanzibar, he emigrated to the UK in 1968 after the Zanzibar Revolution of 1964, where the Arab sultanate was overthrown by the local population in an armed revolt. As the ethnic cleansing of the Arab population took place, Gurnah fled. He taught English and postcolonial literature at the University of Kent almost for his entire adult life. The novel Paradise was written in 1994 and was not translated into Polish until 2023 (translation by Krzysztof Majer, for the edition I read). Once again, I am surprised by the book's late appearance on the market, related to the author receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2021 "for an uncompromising and compassionate exploration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gap between cultures and continents," as stated in the Nobel committee's justification. Interestingly, his work remained unknown to the wider world, and publications were largely confined to Great Britain.

The history of Yusuf

The novel has a relatively clear, straightforward plot. 12-year-old Yusuf is given by his father to an Arab merchant, Aziz, for debts. The boy works in the merchant’s shop, where he befriends another young man in a similar situation, Khalil. Aziz takes Yusuf on an expedition inland, where he intends to trade with local tribes and exchange glass beads and fabrics for ivory, rhino horns, gold and skins. Although previous merchant caravans had been successful, on this expedition Aziz lost a lot of goods in negotiations with local leaders along the way, and difficulties along the way, attacks by wild animals, and diseases afflicting the porters contributed to the failure of the expedition. Yusuf's situation also becomes more complicated when he becomes desired by the merchant's wife, Lady, who suffers from a large birthmark on her face and is convinced that the prayers and touch of the 16-year-old boy will heal her. Despite the warnings of his friend Khalil, Yusuf regularly visits Lady's house, because he is falling in love with Aziz's second, younger wife, Amina. Soon, the situation begins to get out of control, and Yusuf, rejecting the less than subtle advances of his older wife, exposes himself to accusations of rape. Fortunately, the merchant believes the young man's story, but prepares to send him on another expedition inland. It seems, therefore, that the boy has little say in the subject of his own fate and future.

Literary mastrpiece

Gurnah's novel has a traditional, linear plot that is easy to follow, as well as several classical references. Yusuf, enslaved by his parents, strongly resembles the biblical Joseph. Secondly, Paradise is a classic coming-of-age novel, where the young protagonist goes through a series of initiations. Basically abandoned by his parents without a word of explanation, he will never see them again and will regret not learning more about them, while feeling that it has taken away a piece of his identity. The boy encounters a multitude of cultures and religions and tries – by listening carefully – to understand the world around him while becoming mature and luringly handsom.

Africa at the beginning of 20th century

A very important theme of Paradise is Africa at the beginning of the 20th century. White people are just appearing there, but the local population feels that the world they know is coming to an end. The colonizers are presented as a dangerous force with almost divine powers. In local accounts, white people can eat metal, control animals with willpower, eat rotten food and not get sick. The Germans in particular are presented as an exceptionally cruel and uncompromising nation, hence Yusuf's escape to them is an exceptionally dramatic event that closes the book and shows that slavery – in various forms – existed in Africa much earlier. It is hard to say that Yusuf could have made the right choice.

Worth reaching for

For me, Gurnah's novel is a classic in every respect and will join the canon of great world literature. I will gladly return to it in some time, with full concentration and awareness of what to expect. I will also reach for other novels by the Nobel Prize winner - it promises to be a real literary feast.

Roy Jacobsen, Niegodni (De uverdige)

Szybkie dojrzewanie w czasie wojny

Rodzice Olava znikają, a o on sam zostaje z młodszym rodzeństwem, bliźniakami Lassem i Minną, których musi wykarmić.

Mnogość wątków i bohaterów

Dało mi to wrażenie chaosu i mnogości, miałam problem, żeby nadążyć.

Moja ocena: 6/10.

The latest novel by Roy Jacobsen

When I saw that Jacobsen's new book was out, I was very happy. I like the writer's work and so far I have already read six of them - four books about Barrøy, a fascinating story about Fritz Dörries (The Man Who Loved Siberia) and Child Wonder. So I reached for The Unworthy (not translated to English as of July 2024) with great enthusiasm, but a surprise was waiting for me.

Rapid maturation during the war

Jacobsen's novel tells the story of teenagers during World War II in Oslo. Carl (called Kalle by everyone), Olav and Roar live in a poor part of town and have to grow up very quickly. Olav's parents disappear, and he is left with his younger siblings, twins Lasso and Minna, whom he must take care of. Carl's mother suffers from depression, and his father vanishes - as it later turns out, he was a member of the resistance movement and had to flee to Sweden. The boys quickly realize that if they want their families to eat, they have to organize extra money or sometimes steal something for the table. They start robbing the wealthy villas of absent citizens, which not only provides them with better food or sudden access to expensive alcohol, but also allows them to sell many priceless items on the local black market.

A multitude of plots and characters

Maybe I'm tired, or maybe I've been reading too much lately, but my readings are starting to merge into one. The Unworthy are very reminiscent of Christensen's Beatles, although in the second case the action takes place some 20 years after the war and there were four boys, not three. There is quite a lot going on in Jacobsen's novel and I often had trouble understanding the multitude of characters and their relationships. We have Kalle trying to understand what his father did, his father's encounter of events, the memories of the school principal and at the same time a former priest, the loss and return of the twins, we have images from prison. Many events surprised me (sabotage actions against the German occupier and their drastic consequences), unjustified murder, the appearance and fate of valuable items on the pages of the book. It gave me the impression of chaos and multitude, I had trouble keeping up. I didn't feel a connection with any of the characters; they seemed distant, alien, and simply occupied. At the same time, Jacobsen's novel did not seem new or groundbreaking to me, and maybe I am actually fed up with literature on the topic of the war. I think it's worth reaching for it and seeing for yourself.

My rating: 6/10.

Karl Ove Knausgård, Moja walka Powieść Księga czwarta (Min kamp. Fjerde bok. Roman)

Młodość chmurna, durna i zdecydowanie nieromantyczna

Literackie i muzyczne inspiracje

Moja ocena: 7/10.

An early, foolish and definitely unromantic youth

The next, fourth volume of the series My Fight by Karl Ove Knausgård, was starting a little less interesting than the previous ones. The writer reports on his one-year stay in Håfjord in northern Norway as a teacher. However, the book reads in the same way as the rest of the cycle, so very quickly and with great interest. Considering that the remaining volumes cover decades rather than single years, it can be concluded that this time in the writer's life was particularly important. Making of Karol Ove Knausgård.

Outside, it grew darker, and autumn covered the world with her hand

Shortly after graduating from high school, the young writer leaves for Håfjord in the Tromso and Finnmark districts. The surroundings are breathtaking, which Knausgård meticulously notes as the bus approaches his destination. During the winter, complete darkness falls there, which can disturb the natural body rhythm, and functioning in it requires a lot of self-denial. This is perhaps the first literary description of the Norwegian winter I came across that would be so evocative and moving.

Literary and musical inspirations

In addition to teaching, to which the unqualified new-hire prepares less and less over time, there is - as in every volume - a galaxy of names of writers whose work the author has read, and quite a large list of albums he listened to. There are, as in other books, short descriptions of the works of other writers, including Thomas Mann, Milan Kundera and Knut Hamsun. Knausgård points to his literary inspirations, the path he followed and which was important to him. It is fascinating to see how one artist perceives the work of others.

Youthful obsession with sex

The main theme of the novel is sexuality - awakening desire, the problem of premature ejaculation, and growing tension throughout the novel. The writer, with his characteristic directness, also shows the less pleasant elements of early youth. The ending of the book is really backbreaking and will surely evoke an embarrassed smile of disbelief in many. But it's worth it.

The times of teenage youth are less hypnotic

For me, the fourth volume read as well as the others, which surprised me. I started off with a bang, then had a few days of reluctant break, but then I finished the book very quickly. In a way, the fourth volume reflects the hero's maturation, and of all I have read so far, I am the least touched by it. However, it is not a bad novel and it creates a coherent, surprising and probably the most humorous whole with the rest of the cycle.
