Najnowsza powieść Roya Jacobsena

Kiedy zobaczyłam, że wyszła nowa książka Jacobsena, bardzo się ucieszyłam. Lubię twórczość pisarza i do tej pory bardzo mi się podobały jego utwory, a przeczytałam ich już sześć – cztery książki o Barroy, fascynującą opowieść o Fritzu Dörriesie (Człowiek, który kochał Syberię) oraz Cudowne dzieci. Sięgałam więc po Niegodnych ze sporym entuzjazmem, a t tymczasem czekało na mnie zaskoczenie.

Szybkie dojrzewanie w czasie wojny

Najnowsza powieść Jacobsena opowiada o losach nastolatków podczas drugiej wojny światowej w Oslo. Carl (zwany przez wszystkich Kalle), Olav i Roar mieszkają w mało zamożnej części miasta i bardzo szybko muszą dorosnąć. Rodzice Olava znikają, a o on sam zostaje z młodszym rodzeństwem, bliźniakami Lassem i Minną, których musi wykarmić. Mamcia Carla cierpi na depresję, a ojciec rozpływa się – jak się potem okazuje, działał w ruchu oporu i musiał uciekać do Szwecji. Chłopcy szybko orientują się, że jeśli chcą, by rodziny miały co jeść, muszą organizować dodatkowe pieniądze albo czasami zwędzić coś na stół. Zaczynają okradać zamożne wille nieobecnych obywateli, co zapewnia im nie tylko lepsze jedzenie czy nagły dostęp do drogich alkoholi, ale również umożliwia sprzedanie wielu bezcennych przedmiotów na lokalnym czarnym rynku.

Mnogość wątków i bohaterów

Może jestem zmęczona, a może czytam ostatnio za dużo, ale moje lektury zaczynają zlewać mi się w jedno. Niegodni bardzo przypominają Beatlesów Christensena, chociaż tam akcja dzieje się jakieś 20 lat po wojnie, a chłopców było czterech, a nie trzech. W powieści Jacobsena dość dużo się dzieje i często miałam problem, żeby połapać się w masie bohaterów i ich relacji. Mamy Kallego usiłującego zrozumieć, czym zajmował się jego ojciec, relację ojca, wspomnienia dyrektora szkoły, dawnego duchownego, utratę i odzyskanie bliźniaków, mamy obrazy z więzienia. Wiele wydarzeń mnie zaskoczyło (akcje sabotażowe wobec niemieckiego okupanta i ich drastyczne konsekwencje), nieuzasadnione morderstwo, pojawienie się i losy cennych przedmiotów na kartach książki. Dało mi to wrażenie chaosu i mnogości, miałam problem, żeby nadążyć. Nie poczułam relacji z  żadnym z bohaterów, wydali mi się odlegli, obcy, zajęci. Jednocześnie powieść Jacobsena nie wydała mi się nowa ani odkrywcza i może faktycznie mam przesyt literaturą okołowojenną. Myślę, że warto po nią sięgnąć i przekonać się samemu.

The latest novel by Roy Jacobsen

When I saw that Jacobsen's new book was out, I was very happy. I like the writer's work and so far I have already read six of them - four books about Barrøy, a fascinating story about Fritz Dörries (The Man Who Loved Siberia) and Child Wonder. So I reached for The Unworthy (not translated to English as of July 2024) with great enthusiasm, but a surprise was waiting for me.

Rapid maturation during the war

Jacobsen's novel tells the story of teenagers during World War II in Oslo. Carl (called Kalle by everyone), Olav and Roar live in a poor part of town and have to grow up very quickly. Olav's parents disappear, and he is left with his younger siblings, twins Lasso and Minna, whom he must take care of. Carl's mother suffers from depression, and his father vanishes - as it later turns out, he was a member of the resistance movement and had to flee to Sweden. The boys quickly realize that if they want their families to eat, they have to organize extra money or sometimes steal something for the table. They start robbing the wealthy villas of absent citizens, which not only provides them with better food or sudden access to expensive alcohol, but also allows them to sell many priceless items on the local black market.

A multitude of plots and characters

Maybe I'm tired, or maybe I've been reading too much lately, but my readings are starting to merge into one. The Unworthy are very reminiscent of Christensen's Beatles, although in the second case the action takes place some 20 years after the war and there were four boys, not three. There is quite a lot going on in Jacobsen's novel and I often had trouble understanding the multitude of characters and their relationships. We have Kalle trying to understand what his father did, his father's encounter of events, the memories of the school principal and at the same time a former priest, the loss and return of the twins, we have images from prison. Many events surprised me (sabotage actions against the German occupier and their drastic consequences), unjustified murder, the appearance and fate of valuable items on the pages of the book. It gave me the impression of chaos and multitude, I had trouble keeping up. I didn't feel a connection with any of the characters; they seemed distant, alien, and simply occupied. At the same time, Jacobsen's novel did not seem new or groundbreaking to me, and maybe I am actually fed up with literature on the topic of the war. I think it's worth reaching for it and seeing for yourself.

Lars Saabye Christensen, Beatlesi Powieść (Beatles)

O dorastaniu w rytmie hitów zespołu The Beatles

Wakacje to dobry moment na czytanie książek stosownej długości. Do takich zdecydowanie należą Beatlesi Larsa Saabye Christensena – książka ma 732 strony. Naczytałam się o niej u Knausgårda, potem sięgnęłam po Moją chińską babcię autora, która mnie oczarowała, więc kiedy wreszcie zastałam powieść na bibliotecznej półce, długo się nie zastanawiałam.

O dorastaniu na wesoło i na smutno

Książka, wydana w Polsce dopiero w 2016 roku, w Norwegii wyszła już w 1984 roku, można więc powiedzieć, że to klasyka. Beatlesi opowiadają historię przyjaźni czterech chłopców – Kima, Seba, Oli i Gunnara, od dzieciństwa, wspólnych wybryków w szkole, wypraw na ryby, pierwszych miłości, kłopotów w szkole, po wchodzenie w dorosłość. Muzyka słynnego zespołu z Liverpoolu towarzyszy chłopcom od 1965 roku, do jesieni ’72, a więc 7 lat. Początkowe proste melodie z czasem zmieniają ton, stają się bardziej skomplikowane, trudniejsze – jak losy chłopaków. Nie wszystko wychodzi im tak jak by chcieli, jeden z nich sięga po narkotyki, w tle toczy się niełatwe życie ich rodziców (depresja, rozwody). To, co było pogodnym wspomnieniem o dorastaniu, kończy się w sumie smutno i gorzko.

Różnice kulturowe

To, co mnie uderzyło w tej książce, to otwarcie Norwegii na świat w latach 60 i 70-tych. Kiedy w Polsce komunizm miał się jeszcze dobrze, a w sklepach trudno było cokolwiek dostać, na północy trwały protesty przeciwko wojnie w Wietnamie i przeciwko dołączeniu do Europejskiej Wspólnoty Gospodarczej. Młodzież miała dostęp do płyt, adapterów, fajnych ciuchów, a jedynym elementem stopującym konsumpcjonizm jest zamożność rodziców. Kraj się dorabia, to widać, część osób pozostaje w tyle, jak choćby Fred Hansen, wychowywany przez samotną matkę, żyjący w „gorszej” dzielnicy Oslo, a część się dorabia – pojawiają się nowe samochody, nowe sprzęty. Dużą wartością książki Christensena jest fakt, że to swoistego rodzaju pomnik pewnej epoki, jej dokładny opis, możliwość przeniesienia się 60 lat wstecz.

Najpierw Christensen, potem Knausgård

Chociaż książkę czytało mi się dobrze, a przy rozdziale o wyprawie na ryby, piciu alkoholu i puszczaniu pawia do namiotu śmiałam się w głos („Ola wsadził sobie dwa spławiki do nosa i wziął się za sprzątanie namiotu”, s. 250), to jednak powieść mnie nie porwała, jak to czasem potrafi literatura. Primo, nie jestem chłopcem, więc może moje zrozumienie młodzieńczych przygód będzie zawsze nieco… zdystansowane. Secundo, jestem chyba za młoda na tę powieść – dla mnie to już bardziej historyczny zapis pewniej epoki, niż odniesienie do własnych przeżyć czy wspomnień z dzieciństwa. Tertio, chyba Knausgård, odnosząc się z takim szacunkiem to twórczości Christensena, wywindował nieco moje oczekiwania. Widać zresztą wyraźną fascynację młodszego pisarza starszym i miałam takie poczucie, że coś podobnego już kiedyś czytałam. Warto, ale nieprzesadnie.

About growing up to the rhythm of The Beatles' hits

Holidays are a good time to read books of appropriate length. Beatles by Lars Saabye Christensen are definitely one of them - the book has 732 pages. I read about it in Knausgård's book, then I read the author's My Chinese Grandma, which charmed me, so when I finally found the novel on the library shelf, I didn't hesitate for long.

About growing up both happily and sadly

The book, published in Poland only in 2016, was published in Norway in 1984, so it can be said to be a classic. Beatles tells a story of friendship of four boys - Kim, Seb, Ola and Gunnar, from childhood, shared jokes at school, fishing trips, first infatuations, troubles at school, to entering adulthood. The music of the famous band from Liverpool accompanied the boys from 1965 to the fall of 1972, so for 7 years. The initial simple melodies change their tone over time, becoming more complicated and more difficult - just like the fate of the boys. Not everything turns out as they would like, one of them becomes addicted to drugs, and in the background the difficult life of their parents (depression, divorce) goes on. What was a happy memory of growing up ends sadly and bitterly.

Cultural differences

What struck me in this book was how open was Norway to the world in the 1960s and 1970s. When communism was still strong in Poland and it was difficult to find anything in stores, there were protests in the North against the war in Vietnam and against joining the European Economic Community. Young people had access to records, adapters, and nice clothes, and the only element stopping consumerism was the wealth of their parents. The country is getting wealthier, you can see it, some people are left behind, such as Fred Hansen, raised by a single mother, living in a "worse" district of Oslo, and some are getting richer - new cars, new equipment appear. The great value of Christensen's book is the fact that it is a kind of monument to a certain era, its detailed description, and the ability it gives to the reader to travel back 60 years in time.

First Christensen, then Knausgård

Although I read the book with pleasure, and I laughed out loud during the chapter about the fishing trip, drinking alcohol and womiting into the tent ("Ola stuck two floats up his nose and started cleaning the tent", p. 250), nevertheless the novel didn't captivate me, as literature sometimes does. First of all, I'm not a boy, so maybe my understanding of youthful adventures will always be a bit... detached. Second, I'm probably too young for this novel - for me it's more of a historical record of a certain era than a reference to my own experiences or childhood memories. Tertio, I think Knausgård, treating Christensen's work with such respect, raised my expectations a bit. The younger writer's fascination with the older one is clearly visible, and I had the feeling that I had read something similar before. It's worth a reading, but not at all cost.

Karl Ove Knausgård, Moja walka Powieść Księga czwarta (Min kamp. Fjerde bok. Roman)

Młodość chmurna, durna i zdecydowanie nieromantyczna

Kolejny, czwarty już tom cyklu Moja walka Karla Ovego Knausgårda, zapowiadał się trochę mniej ciekawie. Pisarz relacjonuje swój roczny pobyt na północy Norwegii, w Håfjord, w charakterze nauczyciela. Jednak książkę czyta się tak samo jak pozostałe części cyklu, czyli bardzo szybko i ze sporym zainteresowaniem. Zważywszy, że pozostałe tomy obejmują raczej dziesięciolecia niż poszczególne lata, można wnioskować, że ten czas w życiu pisarza był szczególnie ważny.

Na dworze pociemniało, jesień nakryła świat dłonią

Tuż po zdaniu matury młody pisarz wyjeżdża do Håfjord w okręgu Tromso i Finnmark. Okolica zapiera dech w piersiach, co Knausgård skrupulatnie odnotowuje zbliżając się autobusem. Podczas zimy zapadają tam całkowite ciemności, które mogą zaburzać rytm dobowy, a funkcjonowanie w nich wymaga niemałego samozaparcia. To pierwszy chyba literacki opis norweskiej zimy, na który natrafiłam, który byłby tak sugestywny i poruszający.

Literackie i muzyczne inspiracje

Oprócz uczenia, do którego niewykwalifikowany nauczyciel przygotowuje się z czasem coraz mniej, dochodzi – jak w każdym tomie – plejada nazwisk pisarzy, z których twórczością zapoznawał się autor, oraz całkiem pokaźny spis słuchanych przez niego płyt. Pojawiają się, podobnie jak w innych tomach, krótkie analizy twórczości innych pisarzy, w tym Thomasa Manna, Milana Kundery czy Knuta Hamsuna. Knausgård wskazuje swoje literackie inspiracje, ścieżkę, którą przeszedł i która była dla niego ważna. Fascynujące móc zobaczyć, jak jeden twórca odbiera prace innych.

Młodzieńcza obsesja seksem

Jednak głównym tematem powieści jest seksualność – budzące się pożądanie, problem przedwczesnego wytrysku, narastające przez całą powieść napięcie. Artysta z charakterystyczną dla siebie bezpośredniością pokazuje również te mniej przyjemne elementy wczesnej młodości. Zakończenie książki jest iście karkołomne i pewnie u niejednego wywoła skrępowany uśmiech niedowierzania. Ale warto dotrwać.

Czasy nastoletniej młodości hipnotyzują mniej

Dla mnie tom czwarty czytał się tak samo dobrze, jak pozostałe, co chyba mnie samą zaskoczyło. Zaczęłam z przytupem, potem miałam kilka dni pełnej niechęci przerwy, ale potem skończyłam książkę bardzo szybko. W pewien sposób tom czwarty odzwierciedla czasy dojrzewania bohatera i ze wszystkich do tej pory przeze mnie przeczytanych ujął mnie najmniej. Nie jest to jednak zła powieść i tworzy z resztą cyklu spójną, zaskakującą i chyba najbardziej humorystyczną do tej pory całość.

An early, foolish and definitely unromantic youth

The next, fourth volume of the series My Fight by Karl Ove Knausgård, was starting a little less interesting than the previous ones. The writer reports on his one-year stay in Håfjord in northern Norway as a teacher. However, the book reads in the same way as the rest of the cycle, so very quickly and with great interest. Considering that the remaining volumes cover decades rather than single years, it can be concluded that this time in the writer's life was particularly important. Making of Karol Ove Knausgård.

Outside, it grew darker, and autumn covered the world with her hand

Shortly after graduating from high school, the young writer leaves for Håfjord in the Tromso and Finnmark districts. The surroundings are breathtaking, which Knausgård meticulously notes as the bus approaches his destination. During the winter, complete darkness falls there, which can disturb the natural body rhythm, and functioning in it requires a lot of self-denial. This is perhaps the first literary description of the Norwegian winter I came across that would be so evocative and moving.

Literary and musical inspirations

In addition to teaching, to which the unqualified new-hire prepares less and less over time, there is - as in every volume - a galaxy of names of writers whose work the author has read, and quite a large list of albums he listened to. There are, as in other books, short descriptions of the works of other writers, including Thomas Mann, Milan Kundera and Knut Hamsun. Knausgård points to his literary inspirations, the path he followed and which was important to him. It is fascinating to see how one artist perceives the work of others.

Youthful obsession with sex

The main theme of the novel is sexuality - awakening desire, the problem of premature ejaculation, and growing tension throughout the novel. The writer, with his characteristic directness, also shows the less pleasant elements of early youth. The ending of the book is really backbreaking and will surely evoke an embarrassed smile of disbelief in many. But it's worth it.

The times of teenage youth are less hypnotic

For me, the fourth volume read as well as the others, which surprised me. I started off with a bang, then had a few days of reluctant break, but then I finished the book very quickly. In a way, the fourth volume reflects the hero's maturation, and of all I have read so far, I am the least touched by it. However, it is not a bad novel and it creates a coherent, surprising and probably the most humorous whole with the rest of the cycle.
