Zasiadam zatem do ostatniego tomu.

Moja ocena: 7/10.

We Are All Children of Death

After reading The Morning Star, I knew I had to read the sequel. The characters I had grown attached to and their unfinished, abandoned fates kept coming back to me. So in December, I picked up The Wolves of Eternity, which turned out to be quite a risky idea. Even assuming a normal reading pace of about 50 pages a day, that would take almost three weeks, and December is an exceptionally difficult month for me, filled with work and extracurricular activities. Only the Christmas break allowed me to finish the hefty volume, albeit to some extent to the detriment of the plot.

New Characters

To my surprise, The Wolves of Eternity introduces another galaxy of characters – at the outset we have Helge, a young boy who saw car headlights in a lake in 1977 but didn't call for help because he was convinced no one would believe him. The man who died that day, Syvert Løyning, was the father of 10-year-old Syvert Junior and his younger brother Joar. His older son stumbles upon his father's correspondence in Russian and learns that he had a fiery affair in Russia, and that his father's mistress, Asya, has likely given birth to his child. Syvert, unemployed after serving in the army, takes a job at the only place that offers it at the time – a funeral home. The second key character is Alevtina Kotova, an academic and mother of twenty-something Sevastian. She and her son travel north to her father to organize his eightieth birthday party. The volume also includes a philosophical essay by Alevtina's friend, Vasilisa Baranova, titled "The Wolves of Eternity." We meet Syvert and Alevtina again many years later, during their first meeting in Moscow. Syvert witnessed a brutal robbery of a jewelry store and provided aid to the victims, making his short stay in his sister's country exceptionally turbulent.

The Meaning of Life

Two themes connect this volume with the first: the appearance of a star in the sky and the theme of death and the meaning of life. Just as in the first volume, Egil analyzed death from the perspective of the Apocalypse of St. John, here both Valentina in her essay and Alevtina's studies, view life and death from the perspective of biochemistry, Russian mysticism, and scientific experiments. Knausgård devotes considerable attention to the philosophy of Nikolai Fyodorovich Fyodorov, a Russian philosopher and pioneer of the philosophy of transhumanism. Fyodorov proclaimed that in the future, death could be stopped, previous generations resurrected, and Earth's overpopulation avoided by colonizing other planets. This would restore historical justice (the older generation gives life to the younger without receiving anything in return), and reproduction would no longer be necessary. The Norwegian writer also cites the work of Sergei Bryukhonenko, who experimented on dogs, removing their organs and studying them outside the animal's bodies, and also kept a severed dog's head alive for several hours. He created one of the first models of a heart-lung machine. Valentina's text parallels Egil's essay in its difficulty.

A Piece of a Bigger Work of Art?

The book is structured in such a way that it's impossible not to reach for the next, third, and final volume. Will the characters in both parts be connected in any way? We'll see. The Wolves of Eternity was a slightly less readable book than The Morning Star – there were more characters, so we got to know more people. Here, there are the main two – Sylvert and Alewtina, plus side characters like Valentina and Oksanka, Alusha's friend. The star arrives a bit later and isn't as unsettling as in the first volume of the trilogy, so the second part has a slightly different tone. As in the first volume, music plays a significant role (Van Halen, AC/DC, Master of Puppets, Balls to the Wall, Dire Straits Telegraph Road, Sham 69, The Clash, The Police, The Specials, Status Quo, Slade, Mud, Gary Glitter, Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, Queen, Rainbow, but also Mozart and Beethoven). The reader can immerse themselves in the music the characters listen to, and I appreciate Knausgård's meticulousness in this regard. So, I'm off to the final volume.

My rating: 7/10.

Remigiusz Mróz, Osiedle RZNiW

„Osiedle RZNiW. Doznania z lektury?

"The RZNiW housing estate. A Mecca for those who couldn't really afford to live. An asylum for those who are drawn by realities. " And by the way - my first book by Remgiusz Mróz. My reading experience?

A strong first sentence immediately attracts attention and announces an intense literary experience. A surprising and unexpected ending, I would not have thought of such a solution to this puzzle. In between a lot of action, although the main plot - the disappearance of a high school friend of the two main characters, Iza Mikulska, is too obscure and perhaps not very credible. But let’s start from the beginning.

The novel is narrated by teenage Deso, that is Dariusz Sodkiewicz. After his mother's suicide and in the absence of his father, he is brought up by his beloved grandmother, and the household - to put it mildly – is not very prosperous. The boy deals drugs, knows a few bad guys, and generally runs his neighbourhood. One night, he receives a mysterious text message, as it later comes out - from Iza Mikulska, a classmate who went missing that evening. Iza's best friend is Wiktoria Żabska, known as Żaba. Wiktoria is an exemplary schoolgirl, a good daughter who meets the expectations of her parents, a maturing teenager. The desire to find Iza connects her with Deso, and she also has a crush for him. Deso is defending himself against the police suspicion of his involvement in the case. And so their private investigation begins, in which there will be a lot of money, drugs, corrupt police, a soulless father, a lot of brutal sex and many dead bodies. And a growing feeling in the background.

The plot unfolds rapidly, although particularly cruel elements deprive it of some credibility. On the other hand, very vulgar language increases the book’s reliability. What is unique for this book is the portrait of a PRL housing estate and its hip-hop sub-culture. There are many references to Polish hip-hop music scene from the beginning of the 2000s. Even Żaba begins to educate herself on this subject in order to have a conversational advantage over Darek. The book opens with a few quotes from the classics of the genre, and at the end you will find the whole Deso's playlist. Not my vibes, but they make the main character complete, credible.

To sum up - despite some shortcomings in the story, I had a ton of fun, and I read the book in just two days. For entertainment and relaxation, I prefer to read crime novels than any other books, because it is an "active" rest - as a reader I always try to solve the mystery by myself. Here I was without a chance, and I finished my first book by the author with the thought "so this is the famous prosecutor Chyłka!" (Remigiusz Mróz i san author of more than 25 books and in one of his universums the lady prosecutor plays a major role, there is also a TV series depicting her). I will definately reach for other writer's positions with curiosity, however not return to this one.

Więc instrument skazuje go na samotność.

__________________________________________________________________________

The name of the author of The Perfume tempted me to reach for the thin book entitled The Double Bass. It turned out that in 1980 the German writer made a one-act play, which in the 1980s was very popular on German stages. In fact, in addition to its obvious form - a monodrama - the piece asks to be staged because of the musical theme and the numerous musical references. The simultaneous intake of text and music must be the most comprehensive one at the same time.

A few words about the author

In fact, reading the short piece by Süskind I realized that I don't even know if the writer is alive. Yes, he is. He lives in Germany and cares about his privacy very much. In addition to the absolutely best-selling The Perfume, he wrote screenplays for television productions, as well as several short stories and essays. Interestingly enough, The Perfume: The Story of a Murderer remained on the Der Spiegel bestseller list for 9 years. The Double Bass was less successful, although in 1984-85 the one-act monologue was staged about five hundred times on German stages.

Double bass player's monologue

The narrator addresses his interlocutor directly as if he was answering the questions he was asked, but the interlocutor's voice is never heard. Thanks to this, the reader feels as if the musician is addressing them directly. The double bass player goes from admiring the instrument, its history and role in the orchestra to hating it. The huge box is bulky, clunky, towering over its surroundings. A man feels as if the choice of the instrument brings about loneliness and alienation. If he travels with a double bass, no one else will fit his car. In the apartment, despite the maximum soundproofing of the walls, the neighbors are calling to protest that he plays too loud. So the instrument condemns him to loneliness.

With background music

The greatest value of the book is the number of the mentioned pieces of music - if you read with headphones on, then the reception is full. I always listen to enthusiasts of a certain field with fascination, and here the narrator has similar passion. However, I think that the book would please any musician who knows the classics well most. For ignorant people like me, this is just one uneventful evening of reading.
