Thomas Enger, Jorn Lier Horst, Zasłona Dymna (Røykteppe)

Lubię słuchać kryminałów jako audiobooków. Ich treść jest na tyle lekka, że nie wymagają wzmożonej, skupionej uwagi, a jednocześnie są na tyle ciekawe, że da się ich słuchac przez kilka godzin. Tak też było z drugą w serii książką pisarskiego duetu Enger-Horst, a mianowicie Zasłoną dymną. Moja miłość do norweskiego pisarza jest powszechnie znana, z twórczością Thomasa Engera będę się musiała dopiero zapoznać.

Jak jednostkowa tragedia może przerodzić się w powszechny dramat

Zasłona dymna zaczyna się w punkcie, w którym kończy się Punkt zero, a więc tuż przed Sylwestrem. Emma Ramm, dziennikarka  internetowa, wędruje na Rådhuskaia w Oslo, by w tłumie dotrwać Nowego Roku. Sylwestrowe odliczanie kojarzy jej się z poprzednią serią morderstw, chce więc uspokoić skołatane nerwy. Niestety, nie udaje jej się to, bo w jedym ze śmietników wybucha bomba, zabijając i raniąc przechodniów. W zamachu ginie chłopak Ramm, który znalazł się w niewłaściwym miesjcu o niewłaściwej porze. Jedną z ofiar poparzonych w zamachu jest też Ruth Christina, matka porwanej przed dziecięcioma laty Patricii Smeplass. Blix zaczyna podejrzewać, że to nie przypadek i udaje mu się rozwiązać starą sprawę, uszczęśliwiając ojca dziewczynki.

Drugi tom pisarskiego duetu był dla mnie dużo ciekawszy i bardziej wciągający niż pierwszy. Wątki sensacyjne zostały przytłumione, nie ma psychopatycznego mordercy, a zwykłe życiowe sprawy czy niepowodzenia, które mogą prowadzić do tragedii. To właśnie ludzki aspekt historii był tu najbardziej pociągający – rozpacz ojca, uzależnienie matki, odnalezione po latach zwłoki dziecka (wstrzącający opis). Historia została poprowadzona wielowątkowo, tak jak śledztwo. Ciekawy był wątek hotelowej sprzątaczki, która pechowo odkryła sekret jednego z gości i wydawałoby się, że udało jej się umknąć... Dodatkowo obaj pisarze ciekawie poruszają wątek zamachów terrorystycznych – własnie w tym kierunku zwraca się główny wątek śledztwa.

Pisarski duet radzi sobie coraz lepiej

Po moich początkowych wątpliwościach co do pisarskiego duetu, drugi tom podobał mi się bardzo. Nie zabrakło moich ulubionych elementów twórczości Horsta, a więc mozolnego i często wiodącego w ślepe zaułki śledztwa, kojarzenia nazwisk i pojawiających się postaci, pewnej dozy dramatyzmu. Fabuła skonstruowana jest sprawnie i wszystkie wątki zgrabnie się łączą. Dodatkowo, cieszę się, że wydarzenia dzieją się w okolicy Nowego Roku – lubię, kiedy rzeczywistość splata się z książką, choc oczywiście mam nadzieję, że początek 2022 nie będzie tak dramatyczny, jak w powieści. Polecam!

I like listening to detective stories as audiobooks. Their content is so light that they do not require increased, focused attention, and at the same time they are interesting enough that you can listen to them for several hours. This was also the case with the second book in the series by the writers' duo Enger-Horst, namely Smoke Screen. My love for the Norwegian writer is well known, but I will have to get acquainted with the work of Thomas Enger.

How an individual tragedy can turn into a common drama

Smoke screen starts at the point where Point Zero ends, so just before New Year’s Eve. Emma Ramm, an internet journalist, travels to Rådhuskaia in Oslo to experience the New Year in the crowd. She associates the New Year's Eve countdown with the previous series of murders, so she wants to calm her shattered nerves. Unfortunately, she fails because a bomb explodes in one of the garbage cans, killing and injuring passers-by. Ramm's boyfriend, who is in the wrong place at the wrong time, is killed in this attack. One of the burned victims is also Ruth Christina, the mother of Patricia Smeplass who had been kidnapped ten years ago. Blix begins to suspect that this is not a coincidence and manages to solve the old case, making the girl's father happy.

In my opinion, the second volume of the writing duo was much more interesting and engaging than the first. Sensational threads have been suppressed, there is no psychopathic killer, and ordinary life matters or failures that can lead to a tragedy. It was the human aspect of history that was most appealing here - the father's despair, the mother's addiction, the corpse of a child found years later (shocking description). The story was multi-threaded, just like the investigation. The fate of the hotel cleaner was interesting, as she unluckily discovered the secret of one of the guests and it seemed that she managed to escape ... In addition, both writers deal with the plot of terrorist attacks in an interesting way - this is where the main thread of the investigation turns.

The writing duo is doing better and better

After my initial doubts about the writing duo, I liked the second volume very much. There were also my favorite elements of Horst's work, i.e. the arduous and often dead-ended investigation, a list of names and appearing characters, a certain dose of drama. The plot is constructed efficiently and all the threads connect neatly. In addition, I'm glad that the events are happening in the New Year's Eve time - I like when reality intertwines with a book, although of course I hope that the beginning of 2022 will not be as dramatic as in the novel. I strongly recommend the book!
