Odważna powieść autobiograficzna

Na powieść Agety Pleijel trafiłam przy okazji festiwalu Europejskiej Nocy Literatury w 2023 roku. Jak to czasami u mnie bywa, ze zdziwieniem odkryłam, że książka stoi u mnie na półce, chociaż minęła znowu chwila, zanim do niej usiadłam. Książkę czytałam na raty, chociaż mi się podobała, wplatając w nią lekturę innych powieści, co z pewnością trochę zakłóciło mi całościowy obraz.

Agneta Pleijel to szwedzka poetka i pisarka, autorka dwóch tomików wierszy (Oczy ze snu, 1981 oraz Anioły, karły, 1984) i co najmniej siedmiu powieści, w tym recenzowanej Wróżby, która wraz z Zapachem mężczyzny tworzy cykl autobiograficzny. Na twórczość urodzonej w 1940 roku artystki składają się również dramaty i scenariusze filmowe. Pleijel była wieloktornie nagradzana różnymi literackimi wyróżnieniami. Na język polski zostało przetłumaczonych pięć jej powieści i jeden tomik wierszy. Sama z chęcią sięgnę po Zapach mężczyzny, a to dlatego, że Wróżba bardzo mi się podobała.

Wiwisekcja dzieciństwa i wczesnej młodości

Pierwsza w cyklu wspomnieniowym Wróżba to powieść napisana z ogromną odwagą i poetycką wrażliwością. Główna bohaterka, Neta, opisuje czasy swojego dzieciństwa, dorastania i studiów, z ekshibicjonistyczną wręcz szczerością. Doświadczeniem, które naznaczyło jej życie i skończyło się nawet depresją, była zdrada ojca – najpierw romans, a potem odejście z domu i finalnie rozwód z żoną. Powieść starannie pokazuje świat najpierw oczami dziecka, z niektórymi wydarzeniami po dziecięcemu wyolbrzymionymi ponad miarę, pełne przerażenia odkrywanie seksualności, chorobę i długi pobyt w szpitalu, gdzie dziewczynka zaczęła namiętnie uciekać w literaturę. Przedstawione są coraz trudniejsze relacje z matką, która po chorobie Heinego-Medina ma jedną nogę krótszą i chudszą, więc musi radzić sobie z kalectwem, ale późnej również z ciężką depresją. Nastroje matki, jej niekłamana rozpacz po odejściu męża, są szalenie trudne dla jej córek i powodują, że Neta w końcu wyprowadza się z domu, ucieka. Jednak ucieczka niewiele daje, dziewczyna żyje w rozdarciu pomiędzy lojalnością wobec matki a poczuciem tęsknoty za ojcem.

Znakomite przedstawienie wczesnych lat

Uważam, że powieść Pleijel jest bardzo dobra – pisarce udało się oddać fragmentaryczność i nierównomierność wspomnień z dzieciństwa, często niezrozumienie sytuacji wynikające z braku doświadczenia. Pisarka uchwyciła też charakterystyczne cechy naszej pamięci w ogóle – jej wybiórczość, to jak niektóre wydarzenia odciskają się w niej niewspółmiernie do ich wagi. Dzieciństwo, oglądane z perspektywy dorosłego, wydaje się dziwną, obcą i nieszczególnie pociągającą krainą. W moich oczach ten obraz jest bardzo prawdziwy. Znakomicie pokazała też pisarka depresję – fabuła zwalnia, a czytelnik porusza się jak w smole. Wyjście z depresji jest jak ożywczy powiew wiosny.

Poetyckość i ekshibicjonizm

Pisanie książek w jakiejkolwiek mierze autobiograficznych wymaga naprawdę dużej odwagi od autora, jeśli chce się zachować autentyczność. Narratorka opowiada o swoich pierwszych doświadczeniach seksualnych, o masturbacji, ale też o upokarzającym doświadczeniu rozpoczęcia miesiączkowania. Brak jakichkolwiek kompromisów w tej narracji czyni książkę bardzo autentyczną i bezkompromisową. Jednocześnie jednak proza Pleijel ma w sobie pewną oniryczność i poetyckość, oddalenie wynikające z wracania do naprawdę odległych w czasie momentów i poleganie na niepewnych wspomnieniach. Bardzo polecam i z ciekawością sięgnę po drugą część, Zapach mężczyzny.

Bold Memories

I came across Ageta Pleijel's novel during the European Literature Night festival in 2023. As is sometimes the case with me, I was surprised to discover that the book was already on my shelf, although it had taken me a while to sit down to read it. Additionally, I read it  in installments, interspersed with reading other novels, which certainly disturbed the overall picture a bit.

Agneta Pleijel

Agneta Pleijel is a Swedish poet and writer, the author of two volumes of poetry (Ögon ur en dröm, 1981 and Änglar, dvärgar, 1984) and at least seven novels, including the reviewed A Fortune Foretold, which, together with The Scent of a Man, forms an autobiographical cycle. The work of the artist, born in 1940, also includes dramas and film scripts. Pleijel has been awarded various literary distinctions many times. Five of her novels and one volume of poems have been translated into Polish. I will gladly reach for The Scent of a Man, second part to A Fortune Foretold: A Novel.

Vivisection of Childhood and Early Youth

The first in the memoir series, A Fortune Foretold: A Novel is a novel written with great courage and poetic sensitivity. The main character, Neta, describes her childhood, adolescence and studies with almost exhibitionist honesty. The experience that marked her life and even ended in depression was her father's betrayal - first an affair, then leaving home and finally a divorce from his wife. The novel carefully shows the world first through the eyes of a child, with some events exaggerated beyond measure in a childish way, a terrifying discovery of sexuality, illness and a long stay in hospital, where the girl began to passionately escape into literature. The increasingly difficult relationship with her mother is presented. Her parent has one leg shorter and thinner after suffering from Heine-Medin's disease, so she has to cope with disability, but later also with severe depression. The mother's moods, her genuine despair after her husband's departure, are extremely difficult for her daughters and cause Neta to finally move out of the house, to run away. However, running away does not help much, the girl lives torn between loyalty to her mother and a sense of longing for her father.

Excellent portrayal of the early years

I think Pleijel's novel is very good - the writer managed to convey the fragmentation and unevenness of childhood memories, often misunderstanding the situation resulting from lack of experience. The writer also captured the characteristic features of our memory in general - its selectivity, the way some events are imprinted on it disproportionately to their importance. Childhood, viewed from an adult's perspective, seems like a strange, alien and not particularly appealing land. In my eyes, this image is very true. The writer also brilliantly portrayed depression – the plot slows down, and the reader moves as if through tar. Coming out of depression is like a refreshing breath of spring.

Poetics and exhibitionism

Writing books that are autobiographical to any extent requires a lot of courage from the author if one wants to maintain authenticity. The narrator tells about her first sexual experiences, about masturbation, but also about the humiliating experience of starting her period. The lack of any compromises in this narrative makes the book very authentic and uncompromising. At the same time, Pleijel's prose has a certain dreamlike and poetic quality, a distance resulting from returning to really distant moments in time and relying on uncertain memories. I highly recommend it and I will reach for the second part, The Scent of a Man, with interest.

Psychologia wpływu książką o wartościach

Sięgnęłam po tę książkę, by ćwiczyć silną wolę – zamiast zaczynać dzień od prasówki internetowej, postanowiłam czytać jeden rozdział najnowszej książki Briana Tracy – Psychologii wpływu. Mimo, że mój plan się nie udał, to książkę udało się przeczytać, co też nie jest jakiś wielkim osiągnięciem, bo poradnik ma niecałe 150 stron. Natomiast im dłużej czytałam, tym bardziej zastanawiałam się, komu tę pozycję powinnam kupić. Tracy ma naprawdę ciekawe spostrzeżenia i sądzę, że każdy wyciągnie jakieś porady dla siebie.

10 cech, które pomogą odnieść sukces

Jak słusznie zauważa na obwolucie okładki Izabela Cierniak, CEO Greta Design, Psychologia wpływu jest tak naprawdę książką o wartościach, którymi warto się w życiu kierować, by uzyskać sukces. Co ważne, będzie to sukces nie tylko na drodze zawodowej, ale również w życiu osobistym. Tracy oprócz udzielania porad dotyczących technik sprzedaży, mówi również o tym jak mądrze wychowywać dzieci i udzielać im bezwarunkowego wsparcia, ale również o ty, co leży u podstaw wieloletniego, kochającego się związku.

Wyznaczanie celów i wytrwałość

Przede wszystkim, Kanadyjczyk mówi o tym, że trzeba sobie wyznaczać cele. Choć może być to truizm, w zaskakująco wielu sprawach idziemy z biegiem wydarzeń, nie nadając życiu konkretnego kierunku. Dla pisarza to podstawa i początek poradnika – od tego trzeba zacząć. Determinacja, konsekwencja, trzymanie się szczegółowego planu i utrzymywanie właściwego kierunku powinny nas doprowadzić do upragnionego celu, choć oczywiście będzie to rozłożone w czasie. Jest to też związane z ostatnią wartością poradnika – wytrwałością. Tracy radzi, żeby nigdy się nie poddawać. Tu szczególnie podobał mi się przytoczony przez autora cytat: „Nie liczy się, jak nisko upadniesz, ale jak wysoko się odbijesz” (s. 135). Może jest garstka szczęśliwców, która dorobiła się w życiu szybko i łatwo, ale dla większości ludzi zamożnych jest to kwestia lat ciężkiej, uczciwej pracy. Powiedziałabym, że w Psychologii wpływu panuje wręcz etos pracy, co jest zgodne z moimi osobistymi przekonaniami.

Uczciwość i dobre maniery

Co ciekawe, w poradniku na drugim miejscu wymieniona jest uczciwość, ponieważ relacje z ludźmi opierają się na zaufaniu, a żeby je osiągnąć, trzeba żyć w zgodzie z samym sobą i innymi. Co ciekawe, Tracy zwraca uwagę na ogromną rolę reputacji, która może nam ułatwić lub utrudnić zadanie. Znów połączę to z kolejną, przedostatnią wartością w książce – dobrymi manierami. Autor rozumie je jako uprzejmość i szacunek do drugiej strony, ale zwraca uwagę na niedoceniany przeze mnie element – elegancję i wizerunek. W ten sposób również możemy pokazać nasze staranne podejście. Człowieka ocenia się w przeciągu pierwszych 5 sekund od poznania, a nasz wygląd będzie naszą wizytówką i podstawą takiej oceny. Lekcja dla mnie.

Pozytywne nastawienie i szczerość

Na trzecim miejscu Tracy stawia nastawienie i pokazuje, jak wiele może zmienić pozytywne podejście. Zwraca tu uwagę na rolę wbudowanych w dzieciństwie wzorców, ale również poczucie własnej wartości i szacunek do samego siebie. Szalenie ważne dla autora jest nietrzymanie do ludzi urazy i jak najszybsze wybaczanie im. Nie warto kisić w sobie negatywnych emocji, bo mają one niszczący wpływ. Zaprezentowane argumenty były dla mnie przekonujące. Czwartą cechą jest szczerość (chociaż oczywiście połączona z odpowiednią kulturą osobistą i nastawiona na dobrostan osoby, z którą rozmawiamy). W tym rozdziale najwięcej jest porad dotyczących technik sprzedaży i wywierania wpływu na potencjalnego klienta.

Zdobywanie wiedzy

Moim ulubionym rozdziałem jest rozdział piąty, poświęcony zdobywaniu wiedzy i konieczności ciągłego rozwoju. Autor doradza, żeby wstawać godzinę wcześniej i czytać jak najwięcej (co przy czwórce dzieci i licznych obowiązkach zawodowych mogło być jedynym sposobem), co więcej – mówi, że jeśli nie będziemy tego robić, to zostaniemy w tyle przy dynamicznym rozwoju świata, pojawiających się nieustannie i licznie dobrych publikacjach i źródłach informacji. Ciągły rozwój to nie wybór, lecz konieczność. Codzienna lektura wartościowych i sprawdzonych treści jest drogą do sukcesu. Z tym akurat nie mam problemu😊.

Perfekcyjne przygotowanie

Kolejna cecha ludzi wpływowych to przygotowanie i myślę, że niejedna/niejeden z nas miał okazję się o tym boleśnie przekonać. Autor przekonuje, by docenić rolę dobrego przyszykownia do spotkań, prezentacji czy stawianych nam zadań, bo diabeł tkwi w szczegółach, a gotowość na każdą ewentualność może czasami odmienić losy sprawy, na której nam zależy. Wspomina tutaj również o książce Daniela Kahnemana Pułapki myślenia O myśleniu szybkim i wolnym, i już wiem, co będzie moją następną lekturą.

Miłość do ludzi i komunikatywność

Siódma cecha może być kontrowersyjna, ale też i trudna, a jest nią miłość do ludzi. Tracy doradza autentyczne, nieudawane zainteresowanie innymi ludźmi, połączone z umiejętnością słuchania. Wspomina tu o inteligencji emocjonalnej, ale też o zasadzie wzajemności – jeśli pozwolimy innym wpływać na siebie, oni też będą bardziej otwarci na nasz wpływ. Ostatnią cechą będzie komunikatywność, rozumiana jako umiejętność klarownego porozumiewania się, które prowadzi do oczekiwanych rezultatów. Tutaj też wzmiankuje Tracy o uważności, konieczności zwolnienia tempa, potwierdzenia efektywności komunikacji.

Każdy znajdzie tu coś dla siebie

Lektura Psychologii wpływu nie zabiera wiele czasu, zarówno przez niewielką objętość książki samej w sobie, ale też liczne powyciągane i pogrubione cytaty, czy też puste strony po skończonym rozdziale. Mogą to być więc dwie dobrze zainwestowane w samorozwój godziny, które zmuszą nas do autorefleksji i analizy pewnych aspektów naszych zachowań. Mi ta lektura dała sporo do myślenia i sądzę, że może przynieść korzyść jak najszerszej rzeszy czytelników. Polecam!

I reached for this book to practice my willpower – instead of starting my day with an online press review, I decided to read one chapter of Brian Tracy’s latest book – 10 qualities of influential people. Although my plan failed, I managed to read the book, which is no great achievement as the guide is less than 150 pages long. However, the longer I read, the more I wondered who I should buy this book for. Tracy has really interesting observations and I think that everyone will take away some advice for themselves.

10 Qualities that Will Help You Be Successful

As Izabela Cierniak, CEO of Greta Design, rightly notes on the cover, 10 qualities of influential people is actually a book about values ​​that are worth following in life to achieve success. Importantly, it will be success not only in your professional life, but also in your personal one. Tracy, in addition to giving advice on sales techniques, also talks about how to wisely raise children and provide them with unconditional support, but also about what lies at the heart of a long-term, loving relationship.

Setting goals and perseverance

First of all, the Canadian talks about setting goals. Although it may be a truism, in surprisingly many cases we go with the flow of events, not giving life a specific direction. For the author, this is the foundation and beginning of a guide - this is where you have to start. Determination, consistency, sticking to a detailed plan and maintaining the right direction should lead us to the desired goal, although of course it will be spread out over time. This is also related to the last value of the guide - perseverance. Tracy advises to never give up. Here I especially liked the phrase quoted by the author: "It doesn't matter how low you fall, but how high you bounce back" (p. 135). There may be a handful of lucky people who have made it in life quickly and easily, but for most wealthy people it is a matter of years of hard, honest work. I would say that there is almost a work ethic in 10 qualities of influential people, which is in line with my personal beliefs.

Honesty and good manners

Interestingly, honesty is mentioned in the second place in the guide, because relationships with people are based on trust, and to achieve it, you have to live in harmony with yourself and others. Interestingly, Tracy draws attention to the huge role of reputation, which can make our task either easier or more difficult. Again, I will connect this with the next, penultimate value in the book - good manners. The author understands them as politeness and respect for the other party, but he draws attention to an element that I underestimated - elegance and image. In this way, we can also show our respectful approach. A person is assessed within the first 5 seconds of meeting, and our appearance will be our calling card and the basis for such an assessment. A lesson for me.

Positive attitude and honesty

Tracy puts attitude in third place and shows how much a positive approach can change. Here, he draws attention to the role of patterns built in during childhood, but also self-esteem and self-respect. The author finds it extremely important not to hold a grudge against people and to forgive them as soon as possible. It is not worth keeping negative emotions bottled up inside, because they have a destructive effect. The arguments presented were convincing to me. The fourth feature is honesty (although of course combined with appropriate personal culture and focused on the well-being of the person we are talking to). This chapter contains the most advice on sales techniques and influencing a potential client.

Gaining knowledge

My favorite chapter is chapter five, devoted to gaining knowledge and the need for continuous development. The author advises getting up an hour earlier and reading as much as possible (which, with four children and numerous professional duties, could be the only way), what is more, he says that if we do not do this, we will be left behind in the dynamic development of the world, with good publications and sources of information constantly appearing in large numbers. Continuous development is not a choice, but a necessity. Reading valuable and proven content every day is the path to success. I have no problem with that 😊.

Perfect preparation

Another feature of influential people is preparation, and I think that many of us have had the opportunity to learn about it painfully. The author convinces us to appreciate the role of good preparation for meetings, presentations or tasks assigned to us, because the devil is in the details, and being ready for any eventuality can sometimes change the fate of the matter we care about. He also mentions here Daniel Kahneman's book Thinking, Fast and Slow, and I already know what my next reading will be.

Love for people and communication skills

The seventh feature can be controversial, but also difficult, and it is love for people. Tracy advises genuine, unfeigned interest in other people, combined with the ability to listen. He mentions emotional intelligence here, but also the principle of reciprocity - if we allow others to influence us, they will also be more open to our influence. The last feature is communicativeness, understood as the ability to communicate clearly, which leads to the expected results. Here, Tracy also mentions mindfulness, the need to slow down and confirm the effectiveness of communication.

Everyone will find something for themselves here

Reading 10 qualities of influential people does not take much time, both because of the small size of the book itself, but also because of the numerous extracted and bolded quotes, or blank pages after the finished chapter. So these can be two hours well invested in self-development, which will force us to self-reflect and analyze certain aspects of our behavior. This reading gave me a lot to think about and I think it can benefit the widest possible group of readers. I recommend it!

Michał Śmielak, Pomruk

Gdy przeszłość jednostki łączy się z przeszłością miejsca

Zachęcona lekturą Osady błyskawicznie zaopatrzyłam się w kolejny kryminał Michała Śmielaka, tym razem w zbierający dobre recenzje Pomruk. Piękna zielona okładka (ze śladami drukarskiej krwi) zachęca do lektury. Przyznam jednak szczerze, że poprzednia pozycja bardziej mi się podobała.

Zawiązanie akcji

Pomruk został opublikowany w 2022 roku, jest więc nieco wcześniejszy od Osady i wraz z nią tworzy cykl słowiańskich biesów. Jak w Osadzie grasowała Mara, tak tu o szereg zbrodni podejrzewany jest Bies. Jak zawsze jednak potworem okazuje się być człowiek. Ale po kolei. Stanisław Stadnicki, dawny gangus i przestępca, prawdziwy mafijny boss, przeprowadza się do wioski Pomruk w Bieszczadach, by zacząć wieść zupełnie inne życie. Momentem zwrotnym była dla niego śmierć córki, która przypadkiem przyjęła kulę przeznaczoną dla ojca. Mężczyzna spakował się więc, zmienił nazwisko na Borowy, i zapadł się pod ziemię, licząc na to, że przy należytej ostrożności uda mu się całkowicie zniknąć z radarów. Chociaż stałym punktem dnia jest dla Stadnickiego przyłożenie sobie gnata do głowy i codzienne odkrywanie, że nie jest jeszcze gotowy na samobójstwo, dawny mafioso zaczyna budować relacje z lokalną społecznością. Pomaga pani weterynarz Monice Kani w stajni, rąbie drewno wiekowej sąsiadce Zofii Grochowej, przyjmuje wizyty dzielnicowego Waldemara Jaroszka, by oglądać z nim stare filmy na wideo, i pije whisky ze Stefanem Ragany, zapalonym kolarzem. Chociaż początkowo nie ma kontaktów ze swoją tajemniczą sąsiadką, pisarką Marią Zagacz, również tu udaje mu się nawiązać znajomość, jak się okaże nieco głębszą, niż się spodziewał. Kiedy wydaje się, że jego życie zaczyna biec normalny torem i udało się uciec od przeszłości, w potoku znalezione zostaje ciało młodej dziewczyny, która ma wytatuowany portret córki Stadnickiego na piersi. Tak zaczyna się ciąg morderstw w Pomrukach (jak mówią lokalsi).

Niezwykłe zagęszczenie zagadek i zbrodni jak na małą wioseczkę w Bieszczadach

Wydaje się więc, że akcja zapowiada się niezwykle interesująco. Do mrocznej przeszłości Stadnickiego dochodzi mroczna przeszłość mieściny – grasującego w okolicy pedofila, który porywał chłopców (w tym brata dzielnicowego Jaroszka), czy też Grześ Wieżtyca, który gołymi rękami udusił swoją narzeczoną i został za to zlinczowany przez lokalną społeczność. Przyznam jednak szczerze, że im dalej w las, tym było więcej bohaterów i mrocznych historii, aż w końcu zrobiło się ich za dużo. W Osadzie akcja toczyła się w środku zimy, przy trzaskającym mrozie, w dusznej atmosferze pułapki, uwięzienia. Tutaj Śmielakowi nie udało się zbudować takiego klimatu – przestrzeń akcji jest rozległa jak same Bieszczady, bohaterów również jest wielu. Chociaż więc Stefan Stadnicki, mimo swojej naprawdę paskudnej przeszłości, wzbudził moją wielką sympatię i wiarę w to, że ludzie mogą się zmieniać, o tyle sam Pomruk podobał mi się już znacznie mniej. To nadal bardzo dobry kryminał i znakomicie napisana rozrywka, ale brakuje tego składnika z Osady, która czyniłaby go wybitnym. Warto sięgnąć, by się dobrze ubawić i odpocząć, a także śledzić, który to z licznych bohaterów odpowiada za dziejące się w Pomrukach zbrodnie.

When Individual Past Merges with a Local One

Encouraged by reading The Settlement, I quickly stocked up on another crime novel by Michał Śmielak, this time the well-reviewed Pomruk. The beautiful green cover (with traces of printed blood) encourages reading. However, I must admit that I liked the previous title more.

The beginning of the plot

Pomruk was published in 2022, so it is slightly earlier than The Settlement and together with it creates a series on Slavic demons. Just as Mare was on the loose in The Settlement, here the Bies is suspected of a series of crimes. As always, however, the monster turns out to be a man. But let's take it one step at a time. Stanisław Stadnicki, a former gangster and criminal, a real mafia boss, moves to the village of Pomruk in the Bieszczady Mountains to start leading a completely different life. The turning point for him was the death of his daughter, who accidentally took a bullet intended for her father. So the man packed up, changed his name to Borowy, and dissolved into thin air, hoping that with due caution he would be able to disappear completely from the radar. Although Stadnicki's daily routine involves putting a gun to his head and discovering every day that he is not yet ready to commit suicide, the former mafioso begins to build relationships with the local community. He helps veterinarian Monika Kania in the stables, chops wood for his elderly neighbor Zofia Grochowa, receives visits from district policeman Waldemar Jaroszek to watch old videos with him, and drinks whisky with Stefan Ragany, a keen cyclist. Although he initially has no contact with his mysterious neighbor, writer Maria Zagacz, he also manages to make a connection here, which turns out to be a bit deeper than he expected. Just when it seems that his life is starting to run its normal course and he has managed to escape his past, the body of a young girl is found in a nearby stream, with a portrait of Stadnicki's daughter tattooed on her chest. This is how the series of murders in Pomruki (as the locals say) begin.

An unusual density of mysteries and crimes for a small village in the Bieszczady Mountains

So it seems that the action promises to be extremely interesting. In addition to Stadnicki's dark past, there is the dark past of the town - a pedophile on the loose in the area, who kidnapped boys (including the brother of the district policeman Jaroszek), or Grześ Wieżtyca, who strangled his fiancée with his bare hands and was lynched by the local community for this. However, I will honestly admit that the further into the plot we went, the more characters and dark stories there were, until in the end there were too many of them. In The Settlement, the action took place in the middle of winter, in the freezing cold, in the stifling atmosphere of a trap, imprisonment. Here, Śmielak failed to create such an atmosphere - the space of the action is as vast as the Bieszczady Mountains themselves, and there are also many characters. So although Stefan Stadnicki, despite his truly nasty past, aroused my great sympathy and belief that people can change after all, I liked Pomruk much less. It is still a very good crime novel and excellently written entertainment, but it lacks that ingredient from The Settlement that would make it outstanding. It is worth reaching for a good entertainment and a rest, as well as to follow which of the many characters is responsible for the crimes taking place in Pomruki.

Ojciec i syn wobec upływającego czasu

Niewielkich rozmiarów powieść Majsterka Paula Hardinga dostałam na urodziny i musiała chwilę poczekać, zanim po nią sięgnęłam. Mimo swojej zimowej, zimnej w tonacji okładki książka z chłodną porą roku nie ma nic wspólnego. Wręcz przeciwnie – urzeka pewnym ciepłem, jak również kameralnością opowiedzianej historii.

Urodzony w 1967 rok w okolicach Bostonu Paul Harding nie jest bardzo płodnym pisarzem. Do tej pory opublikował 3 powieści, z czego pierwsza – Majsterka – została wyróżniona nagrodą Pulitzera w 2010 roku. Niezły debiut. Amerykanin uczy obecnie kreatywnego pisania na uniwersytecie Emersona w Bostonie, a jego wielką pasją jest muzyka.

Różne portrety choroby

Majsterka jest powieścią niewielką, niewiele ponad 200-stronicową. Jej głównym bohaterem jest George Washington Crosby, leżący na łożu śmierci. Otacza go rodzina, kochająca żona i dzieci. Życie przemyka mężczyźnie przed oczami, a szczególnie wiele refleksji poświęca swojemu ojcu, Howardowi, który był obwoźnym sprzedawcą, cierpiącym na ciężkie napady epilepsji. Z kolei jego ojciec był pastorem, który coraz bardziej oddalał się od rzeczywistości podczas swoich kazań, jakby obsuwał się w pewien rodzaj szaleństwa albo demencji. W końcu w towarzystwie swojej żony wyjechał rozmawiać o swojej pracy i już z tej wyprawy nie powrócił.

Męski punkt widzenia

Majsterka jest utworem wielopoziomowym – opowiada o nieśmiałej miłości pomiędzy ojcami a synami, wzajemnej tęsknocie, szacunku, ale też zaniepokojeniu chorobą. Generalnie jest to powieść w dużej mierze poświęcona mężczyznom, ich punktowi widzenia, ich obowiązkom i relacjom. Kobiety pokazane są jako swoistego rodzaju zagrożenie – matka wywozi schorowanego pastora, ale wraca sama, pierwsza żona Howarda szykuje go na oddanie do szpitala dla osób psychicznie chorych, ukrywa chorobę ojca przed dziećmi. Bardzo dużo czasu i uwagi poświęca Harding epilepsji i podejściu do niej – dawnym sposobom reagowania i leczenia, ale też wpływowi choroby na pacjenta. Drugim ważnym tematem są zegary – George jest zegarmistrzem, naprawia stare i skomplikowane czasomierze, na czym zbija prawdziwy majątek. W jego własnoręcznie wybudowanym domu pełno jest nieustannie tykających zegarów. Tym samym w powieści dużo miejsca poświęca się nieuchronnemu, nieubłaganemu upływowi czasu, odmierzaniu go.

Lektura wymagająca ciszy i skupienia

Mimo swoich niewielkich rozmiarów Majsterka ma nakreślone wyraziste postacie bohaterów, a niespiesznie płynąca akcja potrafiła mnie momentami całkowicie pochłonąć. Jest w niej uważność dla bohaterów, dla ich emocji, cierpienia, ale też dla otaczającego świata. Jest ciche zrozumienie pomiędzy Howardem a żyjącym a lesie pustelnikiem Gilbertem, chociaż pada między nimi bardzo niewiele słów. Większość akcji to wspomnienia, które przebiegają przez głowę leżącego na łożu śmierci George’a, stąd być może spokojne tempo akcji i bardziej kontemplacyjny charakter fabuły. Na pewno jest to książka, do której w spokojniejszym momencie chciałabym wrócić i jeszcze raz do niej usiąść, bez pośpiechu, z należytym skupieniem.

Father and Son and the Passage of Time

I received Paul Harding's small novel Tinkers for my birthday and it had to wait a while before I reached for it. Despite its wintery, cold-toned cover, the book has nothing to do with the cold season. Quite the opposite - it captivates with a certain warmth, as well as the intimacy of the story told.

Born in 1967 near Boston, Paul Harding is not a very prolific writer. He has published 3 novels to date, the first of which - Tinkers- was awarded with the Pulitzer Prize in 2010. Not a bad debut. The American currently teaches creative writing at Emerson University in Boston, and his great passion is music.

Different portraits of illness

Tinkers is a small novel, just over 200 pages long. Its main character is George Washington Crosby, lying on his deathbed. He is surrounded by his family, his loving wife and children. Life flashes before the man's eyes, and he devotes a lot of reflection to his father, Howard, who was a traveling salesman suffering from severe epileptic seizures. Howard’s father, in turn, was a pastor who increasingly distanced himself from reality during his sermons, as if he was slipping into a kind of madness or dementia. Finally, he left in the company of his wife to talk about his work and never returned from that trip. Involuntarily, he has left his family. Howard has done so on purpose, when he realised his wife wants to place him  in a mental institution due to his illness. He has left his wife and kids and started a new life under a new surname.

Male point of view

Tinkers is a multi-level work - it tells the story of the shy love between fathers and sons, mutual longing, respect, but also concern about illness. In general, it is a novel largely devoted to men, their point of view, their duties and relationships. Women are shown as a kind of threat - the mother takes the sick pastor away, but returns alone, Howard's first wife prepares him to be admitted to a hospital for the mentally ill, and hides the father's illness from the children. Harding devotes a lot of time and attention to epilepsy and the approach to it – the old ways of reacting and treating it, but also the impact of the disease on the patient. The second important topic is clocks – George is a watchmaker, he repairs old and complicated timepieces, which is where he makes a real fortune. His home, which he built himself, is full of constantly ticking clocks. Thus, the novel devotes a lot of space to the inevitable, inexorable passage of time, to measuring it.

Reading that requires silence and concentration

Despite its small size, Tinkers has distinct characters outlined, and the unhurriedly flowing action was able to completely absorb me at times. There is attentiveness to the characters, to their emotions, suffering, but also to the world around them. There is a quiet understanding between Howard and the hermit Gilbert, who lives in the forest, although very few words are spoken between them. Most of the action is memories that run through the head of George lying on his deathbed, hence perhaps the calm pace of the action and the more contemplative nature of the plot. This is definitely a book that I would like to return to in a quieter moment and sit down to it again, without rushing, with proper concentration.

John Fowles, Larwa (A Maggot)

Nie każda książka dobrego pisarza musi być arcydziełem

Z dużym zadowoleniem sięgnęłam po książkę Larwa Johna Fowlesa – słyszałam wcześniej o tym tytule, a także znałam Magusa i Kochanicę Francuza tego autora. Plus oczywiście tytuł wydał mi się intrygujący. Niestety, czekało mnie spore rozczarowanie.

Jako że dwie poprzednie książki autora czytałam w czasach przedblogowych, sylwetka twórcy była mi średnio znana. Żyjący w latach 1926-2005 pisarz debiutował w 1964 roku thrillerem Kolekcjoner, by dwa lata później wydać Magusa. Kochanica Francuza to 1969 rok, a Larwa 1985. Brytyjczyk początkowo wiódł życie nauczyciela, uczył w małej szkole w Grecji, stąd też tak wspaniale zarysowane miejsce akcji w Magusie. Tam poznał swoją pierwszą żonę Elisabeth. Po powrocie do Anglii kontynuował nauczane, by zrezygnować z niego po sukcesie swojej pierwszej książki. Od tamtej pory poświęcił się wyłącznie literaturze.

Skomplikowana choć niezjadliwa mieszanka

Larwa jest tworem przedziwnym – mieszanką nie tylko różnych gatunków literackich – fantastyki, powieści obyczajowej, historycznej, kryminału, ale również różnych form – protokołów z przesłuchania, listów czy też klasycznego prozatorskiego wstępu. To swoisty literacki eksperyment, ale przyznam szczerze, że umyka mi jego cel. Powieść nie przynosi rozwiązania zarysowanej zagadki, a w epilogu dowiadujemy się, że przeczytaliśmy 460 stron, by poznać… noworodka, który pojawia się na ostatnich kartkach książki.

Zarys fabuły

Rzecz dzieje się w XVIII wieku, dokładnie w 1726 roku. Syn szanowanego Lorda, występujący jako Bartholomew, znika w tajemniczych okolicznościach. Wiadomo, że w sobie tylko znanym celu skompletował swoich towarzyszy podróży – aktora Francisa Lacy, który odgrywał rolę jego wuja, handlarza, Davida Jonesa, który był ich służącym i czuwał nad ich bezpieczeństwem, Dicka Thurlowa, który był niemym służącym Jego Lordowskiej Mości, oraz główną postać książki – Rebekkę Lee, prostytutkę z Londynu, która, wynajęta przez Lorda pod fałszywym powodem, nieoczekiwanie odzyskuje wolność i po całej dziwnej, mistycznej przygodzie może wrócić do swoich rodziców, wyjść za mąż i urodzić córeczkę, Ann Lee, która w przyszłości będzie przywódczynią amerykańskiej sekty Szejkerów, protestanckiego odłamu chrześcijaństwa.

Fowles ma lepsze książki

Powiedziałabym, że Larwa jest pewnego rodzaju grą z czytelnikiem, zabawą w ciuciubabkę. Kiedy wydaje się nam, że już coś wiemy, poznajemy pewien kawałek zagadki, okazuje się, że dana postać kłamała, opowiadała historię dla konkretnych uszu. Nie dowiadujemy się, co się wydarzyło od momentu pobytu gości w karczmie, do momentu znalezienia zwłok służącego w lesie. Losy inicjatora całego wydarzenia, syna Jego Lordowskiej Mości, jego motywy i cele, też pozostają nieznane. Mi osobiście ta literacka gra się nie podobała, nie odnalazłam się w niej i chyba nie wyciągnęłam z niej większych wartości. Lepiej sięgnąć po inne utwory Brytyjczyka.

Not every book of a good writer has to be a masterpiece

I reached for the book A Maggot by John Fowles with great satisfaction – I had heard of this title before, and I was also familiar with The Magus and The French Lieutenant’s Woman by this author. Plus, of course, the title seemed intriguing to me. Unfortunately, I was in for a big disappointment.

Since I had read the author's two previous books in the pre-blog era, I was not very familiar with the author's profile. The writer, who lived from 1926 to 2005, made his debut in 1964 with the thriller The Collector, and published The Magus two years later. The French Lieutenant’s Woman is set in 1969, and A Maggot in 1985. The Briton initially led the life of a teacher, teaching at a small school in Greece, hence the wonderfully outlined setting in The Magus. It was there that he met his first wife Elisabeth. After returning to England, he continued teaching, only to give it up after the success of his first book. Since then, he has devoted himself exclusively to literature.

A complicated yet inedible mixture

A Maggot is a strange creation – a mixture not only of different literary genres – fantasy, social novel, historical novel, crime novel, but also of different forms – interrogation reports, letters or a classic prose introduction. It is a kind of literary experiment, but I honestly admit that its purpose eludes me. The novel does not provide a solution to the outlined mystery, and in the epilogue we learn that we have read 460 pages to meet… a newborn, who appears on the last pages of the book.

Plot outline

The action takes place in the 18th century, precisely in 1726. The son of a respected Lord, acting as Bartholomew, disappears under mysterious circumstances. It is known that for a purpose known only to himself he assembled his travel companions – the actor Francis Lacy, who played the role of his uncle the trader, David Jones, who was their servant and watched over their safety, Dick Thurlow, who was the mute servant of His Lordship, and the main character of the book – Rebecca Lee, a prostitute from London, who, hired by the Lord on a false pretext, unexpectedly regains her freedom and after the whole strange, mystical adventure is able to return to her parents, get married and give birth to a daughter, Ann Lee, who in the future will be the leader of the American sect of the Shakers, a Protestant branch of Christianity.

Fowles has better books

I would say that A Maggot is a kind of game with the reader, a game of peek-a-boo. When we think we already know something, we learn a certain piece of the puzzle, it turns out that a given character was lying, telling a story for specific ears. We do not learn what happened from the moment the guests stayed at the inn until the body of the servant was found in the forest. The fate of the initiator of the whole event, the son of His Lordship, his motives and goals, also remain unknown. Personally, I did not like this literary game, I did not find myself in it and I do not think I got much value from it. It is better to reach for other works by the Briton.

Lisa Halliday, Asymetria (Asymmetry)

Debiut z Philipem Rothem w tle (i w łóżku)

Książkę Asymetria Lisy Halliday kupiłam w ubiegłym roku na wyprzedaży bibliotecznej, skuszona atrakcyjną okładką i zamieszczonymi na niej recenzjami. Wydany w Polsce w 2019 roku, a w 2018 roku w Stanach Zjednoczonych debiut młodej pisarki zaskakuje swoją dojrzałością, ale dopiero wgląd w biografię artystki pozwala w pełni go zrozumieć.

Autobiograficzny debiut

Urodzona w 1976 roku w Medfield, Masachusetts Lisa Halliday ukończyła Harvard i pracowała jako asystentka literacka w nowojorskiej agencji literackiej. Tam poznała Philipa Rotha, z którym miała romans, a jej debiut traktuje właśnie o tej relacji. Co ciekawe, na razie nie ukazały się żadne nowe utwory autorki, a poza Asymetrią i opublikowanym w 2005 roku opowiadaniem i relacją z życia na Harwardzie nie ukazało się nic więcej.

Budowa powieści

Asymetria składa się z trzech części. Część pierwsza, Głupota, najobszerniejsza i zdecydowanie najlepsza, to opis relacji młodej, 25-letniej asystentki Mary-Alice ze znacznie starszym, uznanym pisarzem Ezrą Blazerem. W części drugiej, Szaleństwe, Amar Jaafari zostaje zatrzymany na lotnisku w Wielkiej Brytanii, gdzie odmówiono mu wstępu na terytorium kraju. Czekając na samolot, młody doktorant wspomina swoje życie, podzielone pomiędzy Stany Zjednoczone a Irak. W ostatniej, najkrótszej części, Rozmowa z Ezrą Blazerem w audycji Desert Island Discs, poznajemy dalsze losy leciwego już pisarza, dalej niepoprawnego podrywacza i bawidamka.

Asymetrie

Dla mnie asymetrii w tej lekturze było sporo. Pierwsza tkwiła w relacji młodej dziewczyny i podstarzałego mężczyzny. On – doświadczony, wymieniany wśród kandydatów do Nagrody Nobla, zamożny, ale również schorowany i obolały. Ona – młoda, biedna, chyba trochę zagubiona, odważna, czekająca na telefon od niego. Zastany ład versus spontaniczność i możliwości młodości. Druga asymetria w drugiej części – zamożny świat zachodu wobec chaosu i niepewności wschodu. Syty, bezpieczny i rozleniwiony mieszkaniec USA czy Zjednoczonego Królestwa versus wiecznie czujny i niepewny swojego jutra mieszkaniec terenów pogrążonych w odwiecznym konflikcie. Trzecia część pozostaje dla mnie zagadką, ale może i kolejną asymetrią. Mary-Alice znika z horyzontu, zostaje sam Ezra, a ona jest tylko wzmianką w jego biografii. On dostał w końcu upragnionego Nobla, ma poczucie satysfakcji ze swojego życia, osiągnął wszystko, co dało się osiągnąć. O niej nic nie wiadomo.

Co wnosi Asymetria?

Z pewnością niekrótka powieść Lisy Halliday to ciekawy i stosunkowo dojrzały debiut, gładko napisany. Redakcyjne lata z pewnością nie poszły w las. Książka zostawiła jednak we mnie mieszane uczucia – zawsze zastanawiam się, co pisarz chciał swoim dziełem pokazać, na co – i dlaczego – zwrócić uwagę. Z pewnością powieść pretenduje do miana czegoś więcej niż tylko dobrej rozrywki, ale jednocześnie do bycia pozycją ważną czegoś zabrakło. Asymetria ociera się o romansowy banał, a części irackiej brakuje głębi – i mimo drastycznych scen w  szpitalu – pewnej dramaturgii. Ciekawe, czy autorka sięgnie jeszcze po pióro, a wtedy – czym nas zaskoczy. Przy jej debiucie pozostaję w zawieszeniu niezdecydowania.

Debut with Philip Roth in the Background (and in Bed)

I bought the book Asymmetry by Lisa Halliday last year at a library sale, tempted by the attractive cover and reviews. Published in Poland in 2019 and in the United States in 2018, the debut of the young writer surprises with its maturity, but only an insight into the artist's biography allows one to fully understand it.

Autobiographical debut

Born in 1976 in Medfield, Massachusetts, Lisa Halliday graduated from Harvard and worked as a literary assistant at a New York literary agency. There, she met Philip Roth, with whom she had an affair, and her debut deals with this relationship. Interestingly, no new works by the author have been published so far, and apart from Asymmetry, a short story published in 2005 and an account of life at Harvard, nothing else has been published.

The structure of the novel

Asymmetry consists of three parts. Part one, Stupidity, the most extensive and definitely the best, is a description of the relationship between the young, 25-year-old assistant Mary-Alice and the much older, renowned writer Ezra Blazer. In part two, Madness, Amar Jaafari is stopped at an airport in Great Britain, where he is refused entry to the country. Waiting for the plane, the young doctoral student recalls his life, divided between the United States and Iraq. In the last, shortest part, Conversation with Ezra Blazer on Desert Island Discs, we learn about the fate of the elderly writer, still an incorrigible flirt and ladies' man.

Asymmetries

For me, there were many asymmetries in this reading. The first was in the relationship between the young girl and the aging man. He – experienced, mentioned among the candidates for the Nobel Prize, wealthy, but also sick and sore. She – young, poor, perhaps a bit lost, brave, waiting for a call from him. The existing order versus the spontaneity and possibilities of youth. The second asymmetry in the second part – the wealthy world of the West versus the chaos and uncertainty of the East. The well-fed, safe and lazy resident of the USA or the United Kingdom versus the ever-vigilant and uncertain of his tomorrow resident of areas immersed in eternal conflict. The third part remains a mystery to me, but perhaps another asymmetry. Mary-Alice disappears from the horizon, Ezra is left alone, and she is only a mention in his biography. He finally received the coveted Nobel Prize, he feels satisfied with his life, he has achieved everything that could be achieved. Nothing is known about her.

What does Asymmetry bring?

Certainly, Lisa Halliday's not-so-short novel is an interesting and relatively mature debut, smoothly written. The years of editing certainly did not go to waste. The book, however, left me with mixed feelings – I always wonder what the writer wanted to show with his work, what – and why – to draw attention to. The novel certainly aspires to be something more than just good entertainment, but at the same time something was missing to be an important book. Asymmetry borders on romantic banality, and the Iraqi part lacks depth – and despite the drastic scenes in the hospital – a certain drama. I wonder if the author will reach for the pen again, and then – what will she surprise us with. With her debut, I remain in a state of indecision.
