Osiemnasty (licząc prequel) tom serii o Williamie Wistingu uważam za naprawdę udany. Zaskakujący zwrot akcji, ciekawie nakreśleni bohaterowie i kilka nachodzących na siebie kryminalnych zagadek – to można odnaleźć w najnowszym kryminale Norwega Jørna Liera Horsta. Pisarz nie wychodzi z wprawy!

Co się kryje na dnie jeziora

Podczas upalnego lata znacząco spada poziom wody w jeziorze Farris. Jest to również związane z pracami na zaporze, z której spuszczono dużo wody, by móc ją naprawić. Jednak brak opadów sprawia, że jezioro coraz bardziej wysycha i zaczyna odsłaniać tajemnice skrywane na dnie. Jedną z nich są zwłoki młodego motocyklisty, Mortena Wendela, który niewiele wcześniej był czasowo aresztowany w sprawie o gwałt na córce sąsiadów. Niedługo po zaginięciu chłopaka dom państwa Wendelów doszczętnie płonie, a rodzina wyprowadza się w nowe miejsce, by zacząć nowe życie. Drugim wątkiem jest znalezienie charakterystycznego złotego łańcuszka z literą A, który przypuszczalnie należał do zaginionej cztery lata wcześniej nastoletniej Szwedki Anniki Bengt. Czy wysychające jezioro kryje jeszcze więcej sekretów?

Temat zmian klimatycznych

Już wcześniej widziałam, że Horst starał się wpleść w swoje kryminały inny, większy temat. Czasami były to problemy z imigrantami (Bez granic), handel ludźmi i narkotykami (Nocny człowiek), czy też samotności i możliwości odejścia tak cicho, że sąsiedzi będą mieszkać koło rozkładających się zwłok latami (Jaskiniowiec). Tym razem pisarz poruszył temat zmian w środowisku, pojawiają się także protestujący (ale i sprzątający wyschnięte jezioro) aktywiści klimatyczni. Temat zasobów wody przewija się również podczas rozmów Everta Hartinga, jego żony Elli i jej brata Kjella-Torre. Ten kochający podróżować kamperem mężczyzna, oskarżany wielokrotnie o podglądactwo i obnażanie się przed młodymi kobietami, szybko stanie się głównym podejrzanym w prywatnym śledztwie małżeństwa Harting. Dołącza więc trzeci wątek.

Ciągle na bieżąco i w zgodzie z realiami

Horst znów nie zawodzi – jego książka trzyma w napięciu do samego końca, a jednocześnie autor pokazuje międzynarodową współpracę pomiędzy szwedzką i norweską policją. Pokazuje również, jak sztuczna inteligencja potrafi wesprzeć śledztwo – choćby w analizie tysięcy zgromadzonych zdjęć (poszukiwanie twarzy czy samochodów w zgromadzonym materiale), wagę poprawnego dokumentowania przebiegu śledztwa, bo do niektórych materiałów trzeba będzie wrócić po latach. Jako doświadczony śledczy autor przykłada dużą wagę do tego, jak policja przygotowuje komunikaty dla prasy, ile można powiedzieć bez szkody dla śledztwa i jak nie skrzywdzić podejrzanego fałszywymi pomówieniami. Winę trzeba udowodnić, a szybko rozprzestrzeniająca się plotka czy pomówienie mogą kosztować kogoś dobre imię, a nawet życie.

Moja ocena: 8/10.

Obsession on Camper Vans

I consider the eighteenth volume (counting the prequel) in the William Wisting series a true success. A surprising plot twist, interestingly developed characters, and several overlapping crime mysteries can be found in Norwegian Jørn Lier Horst's latest crime novel The Lake. The writer is on top of his game!

What Lies at the Bottom of the Lake

During the hot summer, the water level in Lake Farris drops significantly. This is also due to work on the dam, from which a lot of water was drained to repair it. However, the lack of rainfall causes the lake to dry out more and more, revealing secrets hidden at the bottom. One of them is the body of a young motorcyclist, Morten Wendel, who was recently arrested for the rape of his neighbor's daughter. Shortly after the boy's disappearance, the Wendel house burns to the ground, and the family moves to a new location to start a new life. The second plot thread involves the discovery of a distinctive gold chain with the letter A, which presumably belonged to Swedish teenager Annika Bengt, who disappeared four years earlier. Does the drying lake hold even more secrets?

The Theme of Climate Change

I've seen Horst previously attempt to weave other, larger themes into his crime novels. Sometimes these included issues with immigrants (Snow Fall), human and drug trafficking (The Night Man), or loneliness and the possibility of passing away so quietly that neighbors will live next to decomposing corpses for years (The Caveman). This time, the author touches on environmental change, and climate activists protesting (and also cleaning up the dried-up lake) also appear. The topic of water resources also recurs in conversations between Evert Harting, his wife Ella, and her brother Kjell-Torre. This man, who loves traveling in his camper van, repeatedly accused of voyeurism and exposing himself to young women, quickly becomes the prime suspect in the private investigation of the Harting couple. A third thread is thus added.

Continuously current and true to reality

Horst again does not disappoint – his book keeps you in suspense until the very end, while also showcasing the international cooperation between the Swedish and Norwegian police. He also demonstrates how artificial intelligence can aid investigations – for example, in the analysis of thousands of collected photos (searching for faces or cars in the collected material) and the importance of properly documenting the course of the investigation, as some materials will need to be revisited years later. As an experienced investigator, the author places great importance on how the police prepare press releases, how much can be said without harming the investigation, and how to avoid harming the suspect with false accusations. Guilt must be proven, and quickly spreading rumors or slander can cost someone their reputation or even their life.

Richard Powers, Zadziwienie (Bewilderment)

Ślimaki nagoskrzelne są ogromnie niedoceniane

Zdumiewające jest to, że w najnowszej powieści Richarda Powersa każdy znajdzie inny powód do zachwytu czy tytułowego zadziwienia. Wybitny i utytułowany amerykański pisarz stworzył książkę wielowątkową i z pewnością zaskakującą, oraz zdecydowanie mniej nawiedzoną, niż mogłaby sugerować okładka. Bałam się nachalności czy ideologicznego skrzywienia, a dostałam przepiękną historię miłości ojca i syna, z kryzysem klimatycznym przedstawionym oczami 9-cio latka.

Mój syn jest kieszonkowym wszechświatem, którego nie mam szans pojąć

Theo Byrne jest astrobiologiem, badającym możliwości istnienia życia w kosmosie. Theo tworzy całe światy dla swojego syna, Robina, chłopca, który ma kłopot z radzeniem sobie z rówieśnikami w szkole, a jednocześnie przez wiele godzin potrafi w skupieniu malować ginące gatunki, czy z niezwykłą wrażliwością i przejęciem obserwować krzywdy wyrządzane naturze. Pomiędzy ojcem i synem przewija się duch matki, aktywistki społecznej Ally, która zanim zginęła w wypadku samochodowym, zarządzała NGOsem dla kilku stanów. To po niej jej syn ma tak ogromną wrażliwość na świat. Chociaż Powers nie podaje diagnozy dotyczącej małego Robina, dla czytelnika jasne jest, że chłopiec cierpi na jakiś deficyt, nie potrafi okiełznać swoich emocji, bywa agresywny wobec siebie i innych. Szkoła sugeruje podawanie chłopcu psychotropów, jednak Theo zapisuje chłopca na eksperymentalną metodę neurofeedbacku, która w przypadku chłopca przynosi zaskakująco dobre efekty. Możemy więc obserwować niemal skokowy rozwój chłopca, a potem jego stopniową degradację wraz z ucięciem finansowania na badania.

Miłość rodzicielska

Dla mnie najważniejszym i najpiękniejszym tematem tej książki jest miłość ojca do syna. Chociaż Theo sam miał swoje demony z przeszłości, które udało mu się zwalczyć, i włożył ogrom pracy w zapracowaniu sobie na obecne akademickie stanowisko, poświęca swoją karierę dla swojego niedopasowanego do systemu syna. Naucza swoje genialne dziecko w domu, z nieziemską wręcz cierpliwością wspiera jego rozwój i pasje, jednocześnie zdając sobie sprawę ze swojej bezradności i błądzenia po omacku jako rodzic. Nagłe odejście żony, którą bardzo kochał, również nie pomaga. Jednak Theo zrobiłby dla Robina wszystko – i robi.

Granice prywatności

Chłopiec ma tak niesamowite osiągnięcia w terapii neurofeedbackiem, że za zgodą ojca zostaje przedstawiony w wynikach badań, oczywiście pod zmienionymi danymi. Jednak dla Internetu nie ma tajemnic i wkrótce interesują się nim różnorodni blogerzy, a filmiki z nim zyskują miliony odsłon. Jak chronić swoje ponadprzeciętnie wrażliwe dziecko w sieci? To kolejny temat, nad którym pochyla się Powers. Czy jest to w ogóle możliwe?

Zmiany klimatyczne

Dla wielu czytelników kluczowym tematem powieści będą zmiany klimatyczne widziane okiem dziecka. Być może jako dorośli powinniśmy z równym przejęciem postrzegać zachodzące w naturze procesy, zdawać sobie sprawę z wpływu człowieka na środowisko, bardziej przejąć się losem planety. Być może właśnie dlatego Powers patrzy na ten kluczowy temat z perspektywy dziecka, które nie choruje jeszcze na znieczulicę informacyjną, a współodczuwa ze światem. Może też dzięki takiemu przedstawieniu tematu nie jest on ani nachalny, ani tendencyjny, i to w uznaniu czytelnika leży, jaką przypiszemy mu wagę.

To moja pierwsza powieść pisarza, choć na półce już od jakiegoś czasu spoczywa Listowieść. Myślę, że po pozytywnym zaskoczeniu Zadziwienia z ciekawością po nią sięgnę.

Nudibranchs are hugely underrated

The amazing thing is that in Richard Powers' latest novel Bewilderment, everyone will find a different reason for delight or title surprise. The outstanding and renowned American writer created a book that is multi-threaded and certainly surprising, and definitely less haunted than the cover might suggest. I was afraid of being pushy or ideologically biased, but what I got was a beautiful love story between father and son, with the climate crisis presented through the eyes of a 9-year-old.

My son is a pocket universe that I have no way of understanding

Theo Byrne is an astrobiologist who studies the possibility of life in space. Theo creates entire worlds for his son, Robin, a boy who has trouble getting along with his peers at school, and at the same time can spend many hours concentrating on painting endangered species, or observing with extraordinary sensitivity and concern the harm done to nature. Between father and son there is the spirit of his mother, social activist Ally, who managed an NGO for several states before she died in a car accident. It is because of her that her son has such great sensitivity to the world. Although Powers does not provide a diagnosis for little Robin, it is clear to the reader that the boy suffers from some kind of deficit, cannot control his emotions, and is aggressive towards himself and others. The school suggests giving the boy psychotropic drugs, but Theo enrolls the boy in an experimental neurofeedback method, which brings surprisingly good results for the boy. We can therefore observe the boy's almost rapid development and then his gradual degradation as funding for research was cut off.

Parental love

For me, the most important and beautiful theme of this book is the love of a father for his son. Although Theo himself had his own demons from the past, which he managed to conquer, and put a lot of work into earning his current academic position, he sacrifices his career for his son who does not fit into the system. He teaches his brilliant child at home, supports his development and passions with incredible patience, while at the same time realizing his helplessness and groping in the dark as a parent. The sudden departure of his wife, whom he loved very much, doesn't help either. But Theo would do anything for Robin – and so he does.

The limits of privacy

The boy has such amazing achievements in neurofeedback therapy that, with his father's consent, he is presented in the test results, of course with changed data. However, there are no secrets to the Internet and soon various bloggers are interested in him, and videos of him gain millions of views. How to protect your above-average sensitive child online? This is another topic that Powers explores. Is it possible at all?

Climate changes

For many readers, the key topic of the novel will be climate change as seen through the eyes of a child. Perhaps as adults we should be equally concerned about the processes taking place in nature, be aware of human impact on the environment, and be more concerned about the fate of the planet. Perhaps that is why Powers looks at this key topic from the perspective of a child who is not yet suffering from information anesthesia, but who feels with the world. Perhaps, thanks to this way of presenting the topic, it is neither intrusive nor biased, and it is up to the reader what weight we assign to it.

This is my first novel by the writer, although The Overstory has been on the shelf for some time. I think that after the positive surprise of Bewilderment, I will reach for it with curiosity.
