Dramaty ludzi starych toczą się w ciszy
Zobaczyłam książkę Jak złodziej
przyszła na Targach książki w Warszawie. Wydana przez jedno z moich ulubionych
ostatnio wydawców, Wydawnictwo Poznańskie, w tym roku, jeszcze ciepła. Jednak
ze względu na brak miejsca w bagażu, jak wiele innych pozycji, nie została
nabyta. Poczekałam na swoją kolej w bibliotece i przeczytałam w środku nocy, w
2 godziny, nie mogąc spać. Z pewnością zasnąć mi ona nie pomogła.
Reportaże i rozmowy o starości to
zestaw 18 tekstów, 238 stron, krążących wokół starości. Tematyka jest dość
szeroka, co jest jednocześnie wielką wartością i słabością tej książki. Mamy
więc wspomnienia osób starszych z młodości, konieczność opieki nad coraz
bardziej bezradną mamą, rozmowę z lekarzem o chorobach otępiennych, o DPSach, standardach
opieki i wsparciu psychologicznym dla osób starszych, opiece, trosce i
poświęceniu oraz jego niekonieczne dobrych skutkach, o przymusie rodzącym trudne
emocje – żal, złość i smutek wynikające z konieczności rezygnacji z własnych
potrzeb. Jest rozmowa z socjologiem, profesorem Piotrem Czekanowskim, o
starzeniu się polskiego społeczeństwa oraz z krajowym konsultantem w dziedzinie
geriatrii, profesorem Tomaszem Targowskim, o polskiej służbie zdrowia i jej niedoposażeniu
geriatrycznym i brakach kadrowych. Jest rozmowa z dietetyczką kliniczną Anetą Jachnis-Morzy o prawidłowym żywieniu
osób starszych. Są również jeszcze mroczniejsze tematy -domowe hospicja, okradanie
osób starszych metodą „na wnuczka”, zapraszanie na prezentacje i naciąganie na
bardzo drogie zakupy. Centralnym tematem jest w każdej niemal historii śmierć,
przygotowania do niej, wspólny nam wszystkim kierunek. Wielość tematów w
książce pozwala zwrócić uwagę na wieloaspektowość starości i związanych z nią
problemów, a jednocześnie powoduje, że wiele z nich jest potraktowanych trochę
zdawkowo.
Autorkom zbioru należą się duże
brawa za sięgnięcie po tak trudny i często zamiatany od dywan temat, jak i za
kompleksowe, szerokie podejście. Minus za brak pogłębienia niektórych wątków,
rozdmuchiwanie objętości książki osobną stroną tytułową każdego rozdziału oraz
za dominujący ton – podszewkowo dramatyczny, w pewien sposób rozlubowany w
smutku i żalu. Niby obiektywny, ale jednak nie do końca. Ja jednak wyciągnęłam
z tej książki co chciałam – udało mi się lepiej zrozumieć zachowania i podejście
mojej bardzo już wiekowej Babci, niektóre Jej potrzeby czy postrzeganie
rzeczywistości. Teraz książka powędruje dalej do rodziny, zanim zostanie zwrócona
do biblioteki – myślę, że każdy wyciągnie z niej coś dla siebie. Taka pozycja
była bardzo potrzebna na naszym rynku wydawniczym – pierwsze koty za płoty.

The dramas of old people take place in silence
I saw the book Came as a Thief
at the Book Fair in Warsaw. Published by one of my favorite publishers,
Wydawnictwo Poznańskie, this year, it's still warm. However, due to lack of
space in the luggage, like many other items, it was not purchased. I waited for
my turn in the public library and read it in the middle of the night, in 2
hours, suffering from insomnia. It certainly didn't help me go back to sleep.
Reports and Conversations
about Old Age is a set of 18 texts, 238 pages, revolving around old age.
The subject matter is quite broad, which is both a great value and a weakness
of this book. So we have memories of elderly people from their youth next to
the need to take care of an increasingly helpless mother. There is a
conversation with a doctor and psychologist Agnieszka Żelwetro about dementia,
nursing homes, standards of care and psychological support for the elderly. The
topics of care, concern and dedication and their not necessarily good impact of
the caretaker’s life, about coercion causing difficult emotions – regret, anger
and sadness resulting from having to give up one's own needs are also raised.
There is an interview with a sociologist, Professor Piotr Czekanowski, about
the aging of Polish society and with a national consultant in the field of
geriatrics, Professor Tomasz Targowski, about the Polish health service and its
geriatric underequipment and staff shortages. There is an interview with
clinical dietitian Aneta Jachnis-Morzy about proper nutrition of the elderly.
There are also even darker topics - home hospices, stealing from the elderly
using the "grandchild method", inviting people to presentations and
cheating them into very expensive purchases. The central theme in almost every
story is death, preparations for it, the common direction for all of us. The
multitude of topics in the book allows us to draw attention to the
multi-faceted nature of old age and the problems associated with it, and at the
same time means that many of them are treated somewhat casually.
The authors of the collection
deserve great applause for tackling such a difficult and often swept-aside
topic, as well as for their comprehensive, broad approach. Minus for the lack
of in-depth discussion of some threads, the volume of the book being overblown
with a separate title page for each chapter, and for the dominant tone – the silver-lining
of dramatism, in some way fond of sadness and regret. Supposedly objective, but
not entirely. However, I got what I wanted from this book - I managed to better
understand the behavior and approach of my elderly Grandma, some of her needs
and perception of reality. Now the book will go further to the family before it
is returned to the library - I think everyone will get something for themselves
from it. Such a position was very much needed on our publishing market – a marker
of good change and hopefully for further, perhaps better publications on that
matter.
