Jørn Lier Horst, Jedna jedyna (Den eneste ene)

Jedna jedyna to zagmatwana historia zniknięcia młodej siatkarki i wielość tropów w śledztwie.

Impas w śledztwie bez impasu w lekturze

Młoda siatkarka Kajsa Berg znika w drodze na trening. Zaczynają również znikać osoby z jej bliskiego środowiska, a w grobach znalezionych w lesie odkryto zwłoki dwóch głównych podejrzanych i okaleczonych zwierząt. C

Moja ocena: 6/10.

The last of Horst's books I had at home. Although I've read the entire series, each volume was different. The Only One is a confusing story of the disappearance of a young volleyball player and the multitude of leads in the investigation.

Deadlock in the investigation without a deadlock in reading

Young volleyball player Kajsa Berg disappears on her way to training. People from her close environment are also starting to disappear, and the bodies of two main suspects have been found in the forest along with corpse of mutilated animals. Every time a read a crime novel I try to make notes to follow the plot closely, but this time I got completely lost and couldn't figure out who the main culprit was. On the other hand, compared to other books, The Only One stands out for the slow-moving action and the stagnant investigation. There is no body and no scenario can be ruled out. In addition, during the summer holidays, a wave of fires takes place in Larvik. Wisting begins to wonder - do these things have something in common?

The book makes a pleasant reading, with surprising for Horst, ungloomy atmosphere. The heat is unbearable in the summer, and the investigation continues at the pace of a summer siesta. Only the finale of the novel is accompanied by a great storm that will clear the atmosphere and enable a new beginning.

I also like the fact that in every book in the William Wister series we have a glimpse into some small part of his private life. Here we get to know the backstage of his wife Ingrid's death, when suddenly everything falls into lesser importance.

The novel is fine, but I will not want to come back to it like to When It Grows Dark or Closed for Winter. What was missing here was the breath-taking thrill, uncertainty and fear. Perhaps in the light of a hot summer day the monsters do not seem as scary as they do in the middle of the long and dark Norwegian night.

My rating: 6/10.

Komisarz Wisting dba o nieposzlakowany wizerunek swojej przeszłości

Niemal jednocześnie z odgrzebaniem starej sprawy znika Linnea Kaupang.

To fantastycznie pokazuje ogrom pracy dokumentacyjnej i śledczej, którą muszą przeprowadzić policjanci, by wpaść na właściwe ślady i połączyć ukryte zależności.

Wisting szanuje ją i ceni, a jednocześnie cały czas pozostaje kochającym ojcem.

Dwa - Wisting wraz z córką Liną, a potem drobną pomocą przyjaciół z policji sam rozwiązuje dwa śledztwa i odnajduje uprowadzoną dziewczyną. Stawia to norweski wydział śledczy w dość niekorzystnym, a przede wszystkim niewiarygodnym świetle.

My fascination with the detective stories by Jørn Lier Horst keeps on going. The Norwegian writer does not disappoint this time, but also he does not impress.

Commissioner Wisting takes care of the good repute of his past

Horst's books are always slightly retrospective. This time, the cunning criminal Rudolf Haglund returns from behind bars to remove the commissioner from his function for not fulfilling his official duties. In the background there is an investigation of the kidnapping of a teenage girl Linnea Kaupang. But first things first. 17 years earlier, the public has been shocked by the kidnapping of Cecilia Linde. The teenage daughter of a wealthy entrepreneur went missing while jogging. Too hasty disclosure of the details of the investigation pushed the hijacker towards murder and Cecilia's body has soon been found. Rudolf Haglund was accused of the crime - his car has been seen in the area at the exact time of the kidnapping, and the cigarette butt found at the place of abduction with traces of his DNA dispelled all doubts.
Many years later, it turned out that the incriminating evidence was laid by a determined policeman and came from the time of the interrogation of the suspect. Wisting is therefore accused of irregularities and suspended in performing official duties after 31 years of work.
Almost simultaneously with the digging out of the old case, Linnea Kaupang disappears. Wisting cannot participate in the investigation, but he initiates his private one, which of course is successful.

Horst's strengths

Certainly, one strong point of Horst's prose are interesting and credibly outlined characters. Wisting has a very strong relationship with his daughter Lina, an investigative journalist working for the VG newspaper. It is Lina who, with her fresh mind, frees her father from his convictions and prejudices and allows him to look at the whole matter with a fresh eye. She is brave on the border of bravado and will not stop at nothing to get a good material for her journalism. Wisting respects and values her, but at the same time he remains a loving father.

Horst's prose is grounded in his many years of experience as the head of the Vestfold Police District Investigation Department. There are no hasty conclusions in his novels, but many details about the investigation, technical side, procedures and methods of police operation. This fantastically shows the enormity of documentary and investigative work that police must carry out to get to the right footsteps and find out the hidden links.

The fact how much does the work cost the commissioner is also strongly emphasized. This is the kind of a vocation that breaks down his relationship with his girlfriend Suzanne, and it's hard to talk about any personal life or hobby outside of work. There is neither time nor energy for that.

Disappointment

Despite the undoubted strengths of the book, The Hinting Dogs have gently disappointed me. First of all - certainly due to the number of awards they have been showered with - the Martin Beck Award of 2014 from the Swedish Crime Academy, the Glass Key Award of 2013 for the best Scandinavian detective story, and finally the Riverton Award of 2012 for the best Norwegian detective story. I expected something extraordinary. First of all, the main character seemed too crystal and perfect to me. Although he often reflects on his own actions and possesses a critical look, even the accusing Rudolf respects him and wants to help him. I still don't know why. Two - Wisting along with his daughter Lina, and then with a little help from friends from the police, solves two investigations and finds the abducted girl. This puts the Norwegian investigation department in a rather unfavorable and, above all, unbelievable light. Admittedly, with the disappearance of Wisting, the mentor and undoubted authority disappears, and the deputy focused primarily on his career, Audun Vetti, completely fails to conduct the investigation, but this probably does not mean that the experienced colleagues of Wisting suddenly disappear into nowhere.
The book has a characteristic gloomy atmosphere, it is also a ready-made film script. Horst draws his scenes like film shots, he can surprise his reader, build a mood, strike the reader with the power of his image. It is still a piece of good criminal prose, even if the stitching of the plot shows some misgivings.
