Nieśpiesznie sięgnęłam po pierwszy napisany w duecie Jorn Lier Horst – Jan-Erik Fjell kryminał Krzyk, prawdopodobnie pierwszy z serii o niedoszłym policjancie Markusie Hegerze, który obecnie zajmuje się publikowaniem podcastów kryminalnych Krimcast. Mężczyzna wraca do sprawy zaginięcia siedmioletniej Leah Forsberg z 2008 roku, ponieważ na światło dzienne wypływają nowe fakty, a skazany zabójca wydaje się w ich świetle niewinny.

Wielu bohaterów i pędząca naprzód akcja

Uczucia mam mieszane. Dla mnie Horst samodzielnie lepiej buduje atmosferę i ma charakterystyczne dla siebie sceny grozy, które tutaj nie doszły w pełni do głosu. Bohaterów było dość wielu, z niektórymi, jak dociekliwą dziennikarką Mathilde Wold, trzeba się było szybko pożegnać, ale w sumie żaden z nich, oprócz oczywiście głównego bohatera, nie został dobrze nakreślony. Dwie ofiary w zasadzie są nieważne w toku śledztwa, są tylko ciałami, które napędzają akcję, ale niewiele o nich wiemy. Zwłaszcza o zamordowanej dziewczynce.

Pewnie nieprawdopodobieństwa fabularne

Akcja toczy się wartko, ale mało prawdopodobne wydaje mi się to, że czego policja nie mogła rozwiązać w przeciągu kilku lat śledztwa, to domorosły detektyw rozwiązał w 4 dni. Najpierw mężczyzna popełnia kardynalny błąd, ściąga techników kryminalnych do złego miejsca pochówku, ale już w mniej niż 24 godziny ma ponowną szansę i pełne zaufanie policji. Potem podejmuje bardzo ryzykowne działania w scenie wieńczącej rozwiązanie zagadki, narażając życie wszystkich obecnych podczas jego zabawy. Ten błąd ma bardzo poważne konsekwencje, ale to też nie wydaje się zaprzątać głowy autorów. Za dużo sensacji, a za mało starego, dobrego Horsta i mozolnej pracy kryminalnej. Za to najbardziej cenię serię o Williamie Wistingu – za jej realizm i oddanie trudów śledczej pracy. Tu tego nie ma.

Podcast kryminalny

Z pewnością ciekawym posunięciem jest wpisanie podcastu w literacką treść książki. Ta forma literatury cieszy się rosnącym powodzeniem, a dostrzeżenie i docenienie jej stanowi dowód spostrzegawczości i świadomości tego, co się dzieje na czytelniczym rynku. Uważam to za wartościowy zabieg. Książka, jak to norweski kryminał, wciąga i czyta się szybciutko, ale na razie do nowej serii pozostaję nieprzekonana.

New series, new protagonist, new media

I took my time picking up the first crime novel, The Scream, written by the duo Jørn Lier Horst and Jan-Erik Fjell. It's likely the first in a series about the would-be police officer Markus Heger, who currently publishes the crime podcast Krimcast. He returns to the case of the 2008 disappearance of seven-year-old Leah Forsberg as new facts come to light, and the convicted killer seems innocent in light of them.

Multiple characters and a fast-paced plot

I have mixed feelings. For me, Horst builds the atmosphere better on his own and has his trademark horror scenes, which didn't fully come to fruition here. There were quite a few characters, some of whom, like the inquisitive journalist Mathilde Wold, were quickly dismissed, but overall, none of them, except for the protagonist, were well-developed. Two of the victims are essentially irrelevant to the investigation; they're merely bodies that drive the plot, but we don't know much about them. Especially not about the murdered girl.

Plot Improbabilities

The action moves briskly, but it seems unlikely to me that what the police couldn't solve over several years of investigation was solved in four days by a homegrown detective. First, the man makes a cardinal mistake, bringing forensic technicians to the wrong burial site, but in less than 24 hours, he has another chance and the police's full trust. Then, in the culmination scene, he takes very risky action, endangering the lives of everyone present. This mistake has very serious consequences, but that doesn't seem to have troubled the authors either. Too much sensationalism and not enough good old Horst and the painstaking work of the detectives. That's what I appreciate most about the William Wisting series – its realism and dedication to the rigors of investigative work. This isn't the case here.

Crime Podcast

Incorporating a podcast into the literary content of a book is certainly an interesting move. This form of literature is enjoying growing popularity, and recognizing and appreciating it demonstrates a keen eye for observation and awareness of what's happening in the reading market. I consider this a valuable approach. The book, as is typical of Norwegian crime fiction, is engaging and a quick read, but for now, I remain unconvinced about the new series.
