Świat pokazuje nam się wtedy, kiedy jesteśmy zajęci własnymi sprawami

Ostatnio jestem w trybie literatury małoojczyźnianej. W tym roku był przecież i Rok królika Joanny Bator z Ząbkowicami Śląskimi, i Miedzianka Filipa Springera, a teraz przyszedł czas na Kamionek nieodżałowanego Marcina Wichy ze zdjęciami Agnieszki Rayss. Kamionek to dzielnica Warszawy, leżąca tuż przy Wiśle, między Pragą, Targówkiem a Saską Kępą. Po drugiej stronie rzeki znajdziemy Centrum Nauki Kopernik. Oś dzielnicy wyznacza ulica Grochowska, opisywana przez autora jako „rynna szarych kamienic” (s. 23). Właśnie tym opisem zaczyna się książka, pełna antropomorfizacji. Kamionek to towarzysz podróżny, przyjaciel, nauczyciel.

Dzielnica Warszawy

Pozycja powstała z okazji wystawy zorganizowanej przez Muzeum Warszawskiej Pragi zatytułowanej "Znaleźne. Przeszłość i przyszłość Kamionka". Tekst ilustrują fotografie Agnieszki Rayss, fotografa i wykładowcy Uniwersytetu SWPS. Autorzy – zarówno warstwy tekstowej, jak i fotograficznej – zabierają nas w intymną podróż po dzielnicy, pełną subiektywnych spostrzeżeń i obserwacji. Kamionek to nieortodoksyjny przewodnik po dzielnicy, skupiony na rzeczach, na które najczęściej nie zwraca się uwagi – chodniku, samotnych zdobieniach kamienic, porastającym kamienice winobluszczu, innych podziałach. „Najlepiej zwiedzać pod pretekstem jakichś innych, pilnych spraw” – pisze Wicha. „Świat pokazuje nam się wtedy, kiedy jesteśmy zajęci własnymi sprawami” (s. 166).

Lektura dla wtajemniczonych

Książka, jakkolwiek pięknie i starannie wydana, pozostawiła we mnie mieszane uczucia. Mimo, że Autor pisze o miejscach historycznych – szosach, pomnikach, śladach po kulach z II wojny światowej, powojennych gruzach („Warszawa jest zbudowana z Warszawy” s. 92), to jednak jest to osobiste spojrzenie na miejsce, które zna się jak własną kieszeń. To lektura dla wtajemniczonych. Pozostali – jak ja – niewarszawiacy – mogą patrzeć na książkę i zdjęcia z pewnego dystansu, podziwiać poetyckie zacięcie Autora i wyczucie słów, ale miejsce chyba zostanie dla nas obce. Natomiast może będziemy chodzić po własnych małych ojczyznach z szerzej otwartymi oczami.

Moja ocena: 6/10.

The world reveals itself to us when we are busy with our own affairs

Lately, I've been in the mood for literature from the Little Homelands. This year, after all, saw Joanna Bator's Year of the Rabbit with Ząbkowice Śląskie, and Filip Springer's Miedzianka, and now it's time for Kamionek by the late Marcin Wicha with photographs by Agnieszka Rayss. Kamionek is a district of Warsaw, situated on the right side of the Vistula River, between Praga, Targówek, and Saska Kępa. On the other side of the river, we find the Copernicus Science Centre. The district's axis is marked by Grochowska Street, described by the author as a "gutter of gray tenement houses" (p. 23). This description opens the book, full of anthropomorphisms. Kamionek is a traveling companion, a friend, a teacher.

A District of Warsaw

This book was created for the exhibition organized by the Praga Museum of Warsaw, titled "Finder’s Fee: The Past and Future of Kamionek." The text is illustrated with photographs by Agnieszka Rayss, a photographer and lecturer at SWPS University. The authors – both of the text and the photographs – take us on an intimate journey through the district, full of subjective observations and insights. Kamionek is an unorthodox guide to the area, focusing on things that are most often overlooked – the sidewalk, the solitary ornaments of the tenement houses, the Virginia creeper growing over the buildings, and other divisions. "It's best to explore under the pretext of other, urgent matters," writes Wicha. "The world reveals itself to us when we are busy with our own affairs" (p. 166).

Reading for the Connoisseur

The book, though beautifully and carefully produced, left me with mixed feelings. Although the author writes about historical sites – roads, monuments, bullet holes from World War II, post-war rubble ("Warsaw is built of Warsaw" p. 92), it is nonetheless a personal look at a place one knows like the back of one's hand. This is a must-read for the initiated. Those of us who don't live in Warsaw, like myself, can look at the book and photos from a distance, admiring the author's poetic flair and sense of language, but the place will likely remain unfamiliar to us. Perhaps, however, we'll wander through our own little homelands with our eyes wide open.

Niespełnione obietnice

Estetyczna malutka książeczka Nic drobniej nie będzie autorstwa Marcina Wichy to zbiór felietonów z lat 2017-2021 publikowanych na łamach magazynu Pismo oraz kilka nowych tekstów. Rzuciłam się na tą książkę z wielkim zadowoleniem, bo bardzo podobały mi się pozostałe publikacje autora – Rzeczy, których nie wyrzuciłem oraz Jak przestałem kochać design. Ku mojemu zaskoczeniu, nie siadło.

Miejsce felietonu jest w prasie

Po pierwsze, piszę tę recenzję jakieś 5 książek później, i niewiele już niej pamiętam. Może taka specyfika felietonu, ale jednak trochę szkoda. Pamiętam dwie rzeczy, jedną dobrą i jedną złą. Początkowo rozdrażniło mnie upolitycznienie tej książki, narzekanie na partię rządzącą i ciśnienie na patriotyzm. Tak się obawiam, że każda książka, która mocno komentuje bieżącą rzeczywistość polityczną, szybko się starzeje i traci na swoim uniwersalizmie. Zwłaszcza, jeśli sama kreuje podziały my-oni. Jestem na to jakoś uczulona, więc może w tym przypadku twórczość pana Wichy powinna była zostać w czasopismach, gdzie była bieżącym komentarzem do bieżącej sytuacji. W formie książkowej, publikowana post factum i na fali popularności pisarza wydaje mi się pewnym naciągnięciem. Na szczęście później robi się nieco lepiej.

Ciekawe spostrzeżenia

Im dalej od polityki, tym spokojniej i bardziej refleksyjnie, a tematów pojawia się całe mrowie, od ekologii, poprzez literaturę, po sprawy rodzinne. Moją ulubioną częścią, bliską i autentyczną, jest ta ostatnia, zatytułowana Dzień żółwia, a w niej felieton Dzień dziecka. Wicha pisze tam w rozbrajający sposób o rodzicielstwie, trosce o dzieci, pragnieniu, by były bezpieczne i szczęśliwe. O chęci upewnienia ich, że zasługują na wszystko, co najlepsze, bez żadnych warunków: „Najlepsze rzeczy dostajemy na początku. Nie po to, żeby je potem spłacać, tylko dlatego, że nam się należą” (s. 182). To ważna lekcja, powiedzieć sobie, że jesteśmy wartościowymi ludźmi – i nie dać światu zniszczyć tego przekonania.

Wicha nie stracił swojej wielkiej wrażliwości na brzmienie słowa, o czym świadczy choćby tytuł. Sądzę jednak, że czasami swój talent zaprzęga do niewłaściwych tematów, ale cóż, takie jego prawo. Odkładam książkę i za tydzień nie będę już o niej pamiętać, a za kilka lat pozycja może się znacznie zdezaktualizować. Szkoda.

Unfulfilled promises

Aesthetic little book Nic drobniej nie będzie (in free translation: Do you have any change) by Marcin Wicha is a collection of columns from 2017-2021 published in the magazine Pismo and some new texts. I threw myself at this book with great satisfaction, because I really liked the author's other publications - Things I didn't throw out and How I stopped loving design. To my surprise, I didn’t really like it.

The column's place is in the press

First of all, I'm writing this review about 5 books later, and I don't remember much about it. Maybe it's just the specifics of the column, but it's a bit of a pity. I remember two things, one good and one bad. Initially, I was annoyed by the politicization of this book, the complaints about the ruling party and the pressure on patriotism. I am afraid that any book that strongly comments on current political reality grows outdated quickly and loses its universalism. Especially if it creates us vs. them divisions. I'm somehow allergic to it, so maybe in this case Mr. Wicha's work should have stayed in magazines, where it was a current commentary on the current situation. In book form, published post factum and on the wave of the writer's popularity, it seems to me to be a bit of a stretch. Fortunately, it gets a little better later on.

Interesting observations

The farther away from politics, the calmer and more reflective, and there is a whole spectrum of topics, from ecology, through literature, to family matters. My favorite part, close and authentic, is the last one, entitled Turtle Day, and in it the Children's Day column. Wicha writes there in a disarming way about parenthood, caring for children, wanting them to be safe and happy. On the need to make sure they deserve the best without any conditions: “We get the best things first. Not to pay them back later, but because we deserve them” (p. 182). It's an important lesson to tell ourselves that we are valuable people - and not let the world destroy that belief.

Wicha has not lost his great sensitivity to the sound of the word, as evidenced by the title. However, I think that sometimes he harnesses his talent to the wrong topics, but hey, that's his right. I put the book down and in a week I won't remember it anymore, and in a few years the position may be significantly outdated. Pity.
