Przy padającym w polskiej
polityce haśle Cthulhu na prezydenta warto by się było zapoznać z potencjalnym
kandydatem, nieprawdaż? Od niedawna takie rzetelne przedstawienie umożliwia wydawnictwo
Vesper, które publikuje dzieła H.P. Lovecrafta w doskonałym tłumaczeniu Macieja
Płazy, dokonanego na podstawie uzupełnionych i krytycznie zbadanych oryginałów.
Nie umarło, co wiecznie może
spać uśpione
Tomik Zew Cthulhu, wydany
w 2019 roku z wielką starannością (gruby papier, ilustracje Krzysztofa
Wrońskiego z posłowiem Mateusza Kopacza) zawiera pięć opowiadań: Zew Cthulhu,
Widmo nad Innsmouth, Szepczący w ciemności, Zgroza w Dunwich
oraz Kolor z innego wszechświata. Ten wybór do doskonała próbka dla
laika takiego jak ja, który po raz pierwszy sięga po prozę amerykańskiego pisarza
grozy. Jeżeli komuś spodoba się świat wyobraźni Lovecrafta, wydawnictwo Vesper
oferuje duży wybór kolejnych dzieł, równie starannie opracowany i wydany.
Tytułowe opowiadanie stanowi
swoiste wprowadzenie do mitologii Cthulhu. Wnuk odnajduje zapiski swojego
zmarłego już dziadka George’a Gammella Angella z Providence, który tropi ślady
dziwnego kultu. W pozostawionej dokumentacji opisuje symultanicznie występujące
sny różnych artystów, w których pojawia się ten sam przedwieczny byt,
stanowiący połączenie „ośmiornicy, smoka i karykatury człowieka” (s. 10). Kolejnym
dokumentem, mającym uwiarygodnić historię, są zeznania inspektora policji Johna
Raymonda Legrasse’a, który opowiada o napotkanym na bagnach Nowego Orleanu
starożytnym i krwawym kulcie Cthulhu. Dodatkowo, Lovecraft umieszcza w
opowiadaniu wątek starożytniczych konferencji naukowych, gdzie uznani profesorowie
łączą znalezione przez siebie fragmentaryczne informacje, z których zaczyna
wyłaniać się przerażający kult nieśmiertelnego kosmicznego bytu, zwanego
Wielkim Przedwiecznym. Byt ten miał przybyć na ziemię w zamierzchłych czasach, przed
nastaniem człowieka. „Tych Przedwiecznych już nie ma, zniknęli pod ziemią i w
głębinach mórz – lecz ich martwe ciała w snach objawiły swe sekrety pierwszym
ludziom, ci zaś założyli sektę, która wciąż jest żywa” (s. 25). Ludzie
wyznający Cthulhu czekają, aż układ gwiazd pozwoli powrócić Przedwiecznemu,
który obejmie ziemię w swe krwawe i okrutne władanie. Sekta plasuje się poza klasycznymi
dychotomiami, a ludzie pod rządami nowych bogów mają stać się na ich
podobieństwo „wolni i dzicy, poza dobrem i złem; odrzucą precz moralność i
prawo, i będą krzyczeć, zabijać i używać z rozkoszą” (s. 27). Wreszcie na końcu
przytoczone są zapiski nieżyjącego marynarza, które sugerują, ze zło już odradza
się na morzu i czeka na możliwość powrotu.
W tym niedługim opowiadaniu narrator
jest świadkiem i uciekinierem z upadłego portowego miasteczka Innsmouth, gdzie
ludzie połączyli się z dziwnymi potworami, a ich potomstwo przypomina krzyżówkę
ryb i ludzi. Lokalni mieszkańcy pilnie strzegą swoich tajemnic i uprawianego podziemnego
kultu, a jedyny, który może to opisać, zaczyna odkrywać straszną tajemnicę
swojego rodu i swoją powolną przemianę.
Szepczący w ciemności
Albert N.
Wilmarth rozpoczyna naukową korespondencję z Henrym Akeley’em, rolnikiem z
Vermontu. Korespondencja ta dotyczy zwłok dziwacznych stworzeń, które widywane
są w rzece po wielkiej powodzi. Akeley potwierdza ich istnienie i wysyła narratorowi
swoje zapiski, nagrania z fonografu i znaleziska, jednocześnie walcząc z
narastającą obławą obcych stworzeń. Wreszcie nawiązuje kontakt z cywilizacją z
planety Yuggoth i zaprasza swojego adwersarza do siebie, by mu wszystko
wytłumaczyć. Zakończenie, choć przewidywalne, niejednego przyprawi o ciarki.
W
Dunwich przychodzi na świat syn albinoski i nieznanego ojca, Wilbur Whateley.
Dziecko jest niezwykłe, rośnie bardzo szybko, zaczyna chodzić, gdy ma 7 miesięcy,
a mówić, gdy ma 11. Im starszy, tym mniej młodzieniec przypomina ludzką istotę,
a ginie rozszarpany przez psa, usiłując ukraść diaboliczny Necronomicon z
biblioteki. Okazuje się jednak, że jego śmierć jest dopiero początkiem koszmaru,
który czeka wspólnotę w Dunwich.
Kolor z innego wszechświata
Dla
mnie to najlepsze opowiadanie z całego tomu, może dlatego, że najbardziej wiarygodne.
Na odludne okolice na zachód od Arkham spadł tajemniczy meteoryt z nieznanej
ludziom substancji. Naukowcom nie udało się ustalić, z czego się składa, a
tajemniczy metal zniknął. Jednak gospodarstwo rodziny Gardnerów, gdzie miała
miejsce ta niewielka katastrofa, zaczyna powoli popadać w ruinę. Plony są gorzkie,
wszystko nadaje się do wyrzucenia. Kolejnej wiosny wyrastają przedziwne kwiaty,
mające w sobie kolory meteorytu, a z czasem cała okolica zaczyna obumierać,
zamieniając się w proch. Powoli rodzina Gardnerów zaczyna popadać w szaleństwo,
a okoliczni mieszkańcy zaczynają unikać przeklętego gospodarstwa.
Tom
opowiadań Zew Cthulhu H.P. Lovecrafta w nowym tłumaczeniu Macieja Płazy
jest świetnym wprowadzeniem do twórczości amerykańskiego pisarza grozy. Chociaż
sama proza artysty trochę się zestarzała
i z pewnością nie robi już takiego wrażenia, jak niespełna 100 lat temu, to
można sobie wyobrazić, jak musiała oddziaływać na ówczesną publiczność. Warto
też zauważyć, że jest bardzo dojrzała, tworzone obrazy są kompletne, spójne
logicznie, zaskakujące rozmachem wyobraźni autora. Styl Lovecrafta jest ciekawy
i bardzo bogaty, opisy są dokładne, z dużą ilością wyszukanych przymiotników.
Autor miał ogromny wpływ na kulturę i literaturę popularną, więc zdecydowanie
warto liznąć choć odrobiny jego twórczości. Polecam serdecznie!
PS. A Cthulhu
na prezydenta wcale nie chcę!

Cthulhu fhtagn
With the slogan ‘Cthulhu for
president’ falling in Polish politics, it would be worth getting acquainted
with the potential candidate, wouldn't it? Recently, such a reliable
presentation has been made possible by the Vesper publishing house, which
publishes the works of H.P. Lovecraft in an excellent translation by Maciej
Płaza, made on the basis of supplemented and critically examined originals.
That is not dead which can eternal lie
The volume The Call of Cthulhu,
published in 2019 by Polish Publishing House Vesper with great care (thick paper,
illustrations by Krzysztof Wroński with an afterword by Mateusz Kopacz),
contains five short stories: The Call of Cthulhu, The Shadow over
Innsmouth, The Whisperer in Darkness, The Dunwich Horror and The
Colour out of Space. This selection is the perfect sample for a layman like
me who is reaching for the prose of an American horror writer for the first
time. If someone likes the world of Lovecraft's imagination, Vesper Publishing
House offers a large selection of further works, equally carefully compiled and
published.
The title story is a kind of
introduction to the Cthulhu mythology. A grandson finds the records of his late
grandfather, George Gammell Angell of Providence, who is tracking down traces
of a strange cult. In the documentation left behind, he describes the
simultaneous dreams of various artists, in which the same eternal being
appears, which is a combination of "an octopus, a dragon and a human
caricature" (p. 10). Another document to make the story credible is the
testimony of police inspector John Raymond Legrasse, who talks about the
ancient and bloody cult of Cthulhu encountered in the swamps of New Orleans. In
addition, Lovecraft places in the story the theme of scientific conferences,
where renowned professors combine fragmentary information they have found, from
which a terrifying cult of an immortal cosmic entity, called the Great Old One,
begins to emerge. This being was supposed to come to earth in ancient times,
before the era of man. "The Elder Ones are no more, they disappeared
underground and in the depths of the sea - but their dead bodies in dreams
revealed their secrets to the first people, and they founded a sect that is
still alive" (p. 25). People who worship Cthulhu are waiting for the star
system to allow the return of the Ancient One, who will take over the earth in
his bloody and cruel rule. The sect rejects classical dichotomies, and people
under the rule of the new gods are to become like tchem, “free and wild, beyond
good and evil; they will throw away morality and law and will scream, kill and
use with delight” (p. 27). Finally, at the end, the notes of a dead sailor are
quoted, which suggest that evil is already reborn at sea and is waiting for the
opportunity to return.
In this short story, the narrator
is a witness and a fugitive from the fallen port town of Innsmouth, where
humans have merged with strange monsters, and their offspring resemble a cross
between fish and humans. The locals closely guard their secrets and their
underground cult, and the only one who can describe it begins to discover the
terrible secret of his lineage and his slow transition.
The Whisperer in Darkness
Albert N. Wilmarth begins a
scientific correspondence with Henry Akeley, a Vermont farmer. This
correspondence concerns the corpses of strange creatures that are seen in the
river after a great flood. Akeley confirms their existence and sends the
narrator his notes, phonograph recordings and findings, all the while fighting
the growing oppression of the alien creatures. Finally, he makes contact with
the civilization from the planet Yuggoth and invites his pen-friend to him to
explain everything. The ending, although predictable, will make many people
shiver.
A son of albino mother and unknown
father, Wilbur Whateley, is born in Dunwich. The child is remarkable, growing
very fast, walking at 7 months and talking at 11. The older he becomes, the
less he resembles a human being, and he dies torn to pieces by a dog trying to
steal the diabolical and legendary Necronomicon from the library.
However, it turns out that his death is only the beginning of the nightmare
that awaits the community in Dunwich.
The Colour Out of Space
For me this is the best story in
the whole volume, maybe because it is the most believable. A mysterious
meteorite of an unknown substance has fallen in a remote area west of Arkham.
Scientists have not been able to determine what it consists of, and the mysterious
metal has disappeared. However, the Gardner family farm, where this minor
disaster took place, is slowly falling into disrepair. The crops are bitter,
everything has to be thrown away. The next spring, strange flowers grow, having
the colors of a meteorite, and over time, the whole area begins to die, turning
into ashes. Slowly, the Gardner family begins to go insane, and the locals
begin to avoid the cursed farmhouse.
The Call of Cthulhu short stories
collection by H.P. Lovecraft in the new translation by Maciej Płaza is a great
introduction to the work of the American horror writer. Although the artist's
prose itself has aged a bit and certainly does not impress as much as it did
less than 100 years ago, one can imagine how it must have affected the audience
of that time. It is also worth noting that it is very mature, the images
created are complete, logically consistent, surprising with the imagination of
the author. Lovecraft's style is interesting and very rich, the descriptions
are accurate, with lots of elaborate adjectives. The author had a huge impact
on popular culture and literature, so it's definitely worth reading at least a
bit of his work. I heartily recommend!
P.S. And I don't want Cthulhu for
president!
