Maja Lunde, Śnieżna siostra (Snøsøsteren)

 Długo czekałam z lekturą tej pięknej książki – mam wrażenie, że ponad rok. Podrzuciła mi ją znajoma, specjalistka od literatury dziecięcej, a ja schowałam ją w szafie i tak przeleżała aż do grudnia. Jednak jej piękna, zimowa okładka i mroźny tytuł przypomniały o sobie i w spokojny sobotni wieczór, zagrzebana pod kocem i z kubkiem herbaty, wreszcie po nią sięgnęłam.

Mądrze o śmierci

Wydana w 2019 roku w Wydawnictwie Literackim książka Śnieżna siostra Mai Lunde opowiada historię 10-cio letniego Juliana Wilhelmsena oraz jego rodziny. Julian wraz ze swoimi rodzicami i młodszą siostrą August muszą się zmierzyć ze śmiercią 16-letniej Juni, pierworodnej córki i najstarszego z rodzeństwa. Zbliżające się Boże Narodzenie i nadchodzące urodziny Juliana (przypadające w samą Wigilię) sprawiają, że chłopcu brakuje ciepłej rodzinnej atmosfery i bożonarodzeniowych dekoracji i zapachów. Ten brak zaczyna chłopcu doskwierać jeszcze dotkliwiej, gdy poznaje swoją rówieśniczkę, Hedvig Hansen. Tajemnicza dziewczynka zaprasza chłopca do swojego pięknego domu, gdzie niemal każdy kąt pachnie świętami. Dziewczynka na nowo zaraża Juliana radością życia, pozwalając jednocześnie oswoić śmierć siostry.

Gdy umiera dziecko

Lunde porusza temat niesamowicie trudny i bolesny – śmierć dziecko. W książce umierają dwie dziewczynki, obie w bezsensowny i niepotrzebny sposób, co budzi głęboką rozpacz otoczenia. Jednak Lunde potrafi pisać o śmierci unikając ckliwości i zbędnego patosu, bez rozdzierania serca, spokojnie, a jednocześnie niezwykle poruszająco. Mądrze. Tłumaczy majestat i nieodwołalność śmierci nie czyniąc jej jednocześnie czymś strasznym, oswaja czytelników z odchodzeniem. To wartościowa pozycja.

Warstwa graficzna

Książkę można czytać niczym kalendarz adwentowy – podzielona na 24 rozdziały może umilać adwentowe wieczory. Osobiście cieszę się jednak, że nie czekałam do Wigilii – temat jest jednak smutny, melancholijny, i mimo, że książka niemal pachnie świętami, to jednak skończyłam ją czytać odczuwając smutek.

Niesamowitym uzupełnieniem treści są ilustracje Lisy Aisato. Wspaniałe akwarele dopełniają treści – gdy w książce robi się strasznie, strony stają się czarne, a jasność stron w rozdziale 20 wnosi słoneczną radość i nadzieję. Współgranie ilustracji i opowiadanej historii jest tu naprawdę na niezwykle wysokim poziomie, jakiego jeszcze nie widziałam. Ilustracje Aisato są piękne, wzruszające, podkreślają nastroje, fascynują detalami. Majstersztyk. Już dla nich samych warto kupić Śnieżną siostrę.

I have waited more than a year to read this beautiful book. A friend of mine, a specialist in children's literature, lent it to me, and I hid it on the shelf and so it waited there there til December. However, its beautiful, winter cover and the frosty title reminded me of its existence and on a quiet Saturday evening, buried under a blanket with a cup of tea in my hand, I finally reached for it.

Wisely on death

The book Snow Sister by Maja Lunde, published in 2019 by Wydawnictwo Literackie, tells the story of 10-year-old Julian Wilhelmsen and his family. Julian, along with his parents and younger sister August, must face the death of 16-year-old Juni, the firstborn daughter and eldest of the siblings. The upcoming Christmas and Julian's birthday (on Christmas Eve itself) mean that the boy lacks a warm family atmosphere, Christmas decorations and scents. This lack begins to bother the boy even more when he meets his peer, Hedvig Hansen. A mysterious girl invites a boy to her beautiful home, where almost every corner smells of Christmas. The girl infects Julian with the joy of life, while allowing him to accept his sister's death.

When a child dies

Lunde raises an incredibly difficult and painful topic - the death of a child. In the book two girls die, both in a senseless and unnecessary way, which causes deep despair of their families. However, Lunde can write about death avoiding sloppy and unnecessary pathos, without tearing the heart, calmly and at the same time wisely and moving. She explains the majesty and irrevocability of death without making it something terrible, but intimate and humane. This is definately a valuable publication.

Graphic layer

The book can be read like an Advent calendar - divided into 24 chapters, it can make Advent evenings more pleasant. Personally, I am glad that I did not wait until Christmas Eve - the subject is sad, melancholic, and although the book almost smells like Christmas, I finished reading it feeling sad.

The illustrations by Lisa Aisato are an amazing addition to the content. Gorgeous watercolors complete the content - when the book gets spooky, the pages turn black, and the brightness of the pages in Chapter 20 brings sunny joy and hope. The interplay between the illustration and the story told is really at an extremely high level, which I haven't seen before. Aisato's illustrations are beautiful, touching, emphasize moods and fascinate with details. A true masterpiece. It's worth buying the Snow Sister just for them.
