Dygot kompletnie mnie zaskoczył. W ogóle nie spodziewałam się takiej treści, takiej historii, takich wzruszeń. Uwielbiam nie wiedzieć, o czym będzie dana książka, a potem przeżywać zaskoczenia. Zwłaszcza, jeśli są pozytywne!

Zarys fabuły ze spojlerami

Janek Łabendowicz ożenił się z Irenką, córką cudaka Pokrzywa i wariatki Dojki. Młode małżeństwo szybko zostało rodzicam Kazia, a żona wkrótce zaszła w drugą ciążę. Rodzina mieszkała przy Frau Eberl, której pomagali w gospodarstwie. Jednak z końcem wojny Janek nie chciał odwieźć swojej dawnej gospodyni do nowej granicy i porzucił ją w drodze, wracając do swojej ciężarnej żony. Porzucona bez opieki Niemka rzuciła na niego przekleństwo, a wkrótce Irenka urodziła syna – albinosa.  Chłopiec dostał na imię Wiktor i we wsi postrzegany jako zwiastun kary bożej i odmieniec. Łatwo nie miał, zwłaszcza, że miejscowi postanowili się go pozbyć, by odwrócić ciągle nękające ich plagi. Dziecko przeżyło cios siekierą w głowę, ale samo zaczęło lubować się w śmierci. Wiktor usiłował zabić kota, a potem zabił żyjącego w rowie Johana Pilchera, Strzępka, z którym rozmawiał i któremu podsunął wcześniej niechcący plan zamordowania własnego ojca.

Drugim wątkiem powieści są losy rodziny Gelda. Bronisław Gelda ożenił się z Helenką i mieli córeczkę Emilkę. Rodzice prowadzili warzywniak w mieście, a ich dziecko bawiło się pod opieką sióstr Pyziakowych. Zardzewiały granat przechowywany w szafie wybuchł bez ostrzeżenia, cztery siostry zginęły, a Emilka została poważnie poparzona. Zrozpaczony ojciec wraca do Cyganów, którzy przepowiedzieli mu taki los, i dowiaduje się o dalsze dzieje swojego dziecka. Ich przepowiednia ma się spełnić co do słowa.

Losy dwójki wyrzutków stykają się, a wtedy Albinos ze zwidami po uderzeniu siekierą i poparzona samotna dziewczyna zakochują się w sobie na śmierć. Emilka rodzi syna, Sebastiana, ale jej mąż ginie w tajemniczych okolicznościach. Dopiero po wielu latach to właśnie Sebastianowi uda się rozwikłać tajemnicę śmierci ojca. W tle zaś toczą się historie ich rodziny – ojciec umiera na raka, Kazimierz jest mężem Krysi i ojcem Helenki, ale również alkoholikiem.

Zapraszam Państwa do świata mojej wyobraźni

Podoba mi się koronkowa fabuła tej książki, przeplatające się losy bohaterów i przedstawienie trzech pokoleń. Bohaterowie są spójni, choć każdy z nich przesycony jest nieszczęściem, smutkiem, melancholią, śmiercią. Wyznacznikiem ich człowieczeństwa jest cierpienie i ulotność przeżywanego szczęścia, oraz znacząca przewaga bólu i smutku nad ulotną radością i spełnieniem. Jedyne, co psuło mi może trochę przyjemność z lektury, to przeświadczenie, że świat nie jest aż taki ponury i smutny, jak przedstawiony przez Małeckiego. Ale przecież książki czyta się po to, by zobaczyć inny punkt widzenia, inne spojrzenie na świat, nieprawdaż?

Literackie odnośniki

Dygot przypominał mi nieco Sto lat samotności Marqueza, a to za sprawą pojawiającego się często realizmu magicznego. Spełniające się przepowiednie Cyganów, czarne otaczające Wiktora i jego syna, niemal nieśmiertelna Dojka – to wszystko elementy niemal jak z powieści kolumbijskiego pisarza. Silne są również podobieństwa do powieści Kamień na kamieniu Wiesława Myśliwskiego, ze zrelacjonowanymi dokładnie losami Szymona Pietruszki. Pojawia się również ciekawy i rzadki w polskiej literaturze wątek albinosa, ze wszystkimi jego uwarunkowaniami kulturowymi (zabobonne podejście ludności wiejskiej i miejskiej do chłopca, a potem mężczyzny, próby morderstwa). Przyznam szczerze, że w literaturze polskiej to pierwszy taki portret, z którym się spotkałam. Małecki lubi pisać o inności, o wyrzutkach, dziwakach, odszczepieńcach. Zaryzykowałabym twierdzenie, że poruszone tematy inności oraz choroby i śmierci to jego znaki charakterystyczne.

Sporo uwagi poświęca autor również historii dziejącej się w tle. Oczami Jana Łabędowicza widzimy świat za czasów II wojny światowej, oczami rodziny Geldów trudy życia w powojennej Polsce. Z Emilką przechodzimy czasy komunizmu, a Sebastian wprowadza nas w lata transformacji. To wszystko pokazane jest nienachalnie, jako przekonujące tło wydarzeń, nadające im wiarygodności.

Polecam! Wciągająca lektura, napisana lekko, do przeczytania w dwa dni. Niesamowicie wciągająca i poruszająca.

You are a scream, you are shivering, you are a drop in the river

Shiver surprised me completely. I did not expect such content, such a story, such emotions at all. I love not knowing what a book is going to be about and then experience surprises. Especially if they are positive!

Outline of the plot with numerous spoilers

Janek Łabendowicz married Irenka, the daughter of a weirdo Pokrzyw and a madwoman, Dojka. The young couple quickly became Kazio's parents, and the wife soon became pregnant again. The family lived at Frau Eberl’s, whom they helped on the farm. However, with the end of the war, Janek did not want to take his former hostess to the new border and abandoned her on the way, returning to his pregnant wife. The German woman, abandoned, cursed him, and soon Irenka gave birth to a son - an albino. The boy was named Wiktor and in the village was perceived as a harbinger of divine punishment and a changeling. Life has not been easy for him, especially since the locals decided to get rid of him in order to ward off the plagues that continued to strike them. The child survived the blow of an axe to the head, but began to enjoy death itself. Wiktor tried to strangle the cat and later killed Johan Pilcher, the Scap, who lived in the ditch, with whom he had spoken and to whom he had previously unintentionally encouraged to murder his father.

The second theme of the novel is the fate of the Gelda family. Bronisław Gelda married Helena and they had a daughter, Emilka. The parents ran a greengrocer in the city, and their child played under the care of the Pyziak sisters. A rusty grenade stored in a cupboard exploded without warning, four sisters were killed and Emilka was severely burned. The desperate father returns to the Gypsies who foretold him such ebents, and learns about the further fate of his child. Their prophecy is to be fulfilled to the word.

The fates of the two outcasts cross and the hallucinating Albino and the burned lonely girl fall in love with each other. Emilka gives birth to a son, Sebastian, but her husband dies in mysterious circumstances. Only after many years it is Sebastian who will manage to unravel the enigma of his father's death. In the background, the stories of their family unfold - the father dies of cancer, Kazimierz is Krysia's husband and a father to Helenka, but also an alcoholic.

Welcome to the world of my imagination

I like the intricate plot of this book, the intertwining fates of the heroes and the presentation of three generations. The characters are consistent, although each of them is saturated with misfortune, sadness, melancholy and death. The determinant of their humanity is suffering and the fleetingness of experienced happiness, as well as a significant advantage of pain and sadness over joy and fulfillment. The only thing that spoiled my reading pleasure a bit is the conviction that the world is not as gloomy and sad as the one presented by Małecki. But after all, books are read to see a different point of view, a different view of the world, right?

Literary references

Shiver reminded me a bit of Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, thanks to the frequently occurring magical realism. The fulfilling prophecies of the Gypsies, the black surrounding Wiktor and his son, the almost immortal Dojka - all these elements resemble the style of the Colombian writer. There are also strong similarities to the novel Stone upon Stone by Wiesław Myśliwski, with the exact description of the life of Szymon Pietruszka. There is also an interesting and rare in Polish literature topic of the albino, with all its cultural determinants (superstitious attitude of the rural and urban population towards a boy, then a man, and attempted murders). I honestly admit that in Polish literature it is the first portrait of this type that I have come across. Małecki likes to write about otherness, outcasts, weirdos and dissenters. I would risk saying that the discussed themes of otherness as well as disease and death make his signature style.

The author also devotes a lot of attention to the background story. Through the eyes of Jan Łabędowicz we see the world during World War II, through the eyes of the Gelda family the hardships of life in post-war Poland. With Emilka we go through the times of communism, and Sebastian introduces us to the years of transformation. All this is shown unobtrusively as a convincing background to the events, giving them credibility.

I strongly recommend this book! Addictive reading, written lightly, to read in two days.
