Tarnowscy Żydzi w obliczu wojny

Jestem wierną fanką talentu i twórczości Mikołaja Łozińskiego, odkąd przeczytałam jego debiut, Reisefieber. Zaskoczyła mnie wtedy dojrzałość autora. Potem była piękna, ciepła, napisana z zawadiackim humorem Książka. Wreszcie nadszedł czas na opublikowanego w 2019 roku Stramera.

Historia rodziny w trudnych czasach

Stramerowie to rodzina tarnowskich Żydów – Natan i Rywka wychowują razem sześcioro dzieci. Najstarsza córka Rena jest lokalną pięknością, Rudek autorytetem dla braci i studentem filologii klasycznej, Hesio i Salek zaczynają działać w partii, ale to młodszy brat zostaje za to niespodziewanie aresztowany. Najmłodsi – Wela i Nusek – trzymają się jeszcze matczynej spódnicy i obserwują wraz z nią dorastające rodzeństwo. W tle dzieje się wielka historia – Polska odzyskuje niepodległość, rozpoczynają się działania partii komunistycznej, świat się radykalizuje. Zbliża się i wybucha II wojna światowa.

Rodzina

To, co urzeka w książce Stramera, to klasyczność jego prozy. Nie ma tu żadnych eksperymentów formalnych, jest za to ogrom badawczej pracy, by odpowiednio przedstawić przedwojenny Tarnów, jest sporo postaci historycznych (Piłsudski, Tetmajer, Przybyszewski). Realia przedwojennego życia pokazane są naprawdę bardzo dobrze, ale mimo nadchodzących mrocznych czasów i wojennej zawieruchy w prozie Łozińskiego po raz kolejny najważniejsza jest rodzina, a konkretnie – postać matki. To właśnie Rywka jest ukrytą osią całego mechanizmu Stramerów, to jej marzenia, troski, obserwacje są tu najcenniejsze i najważniejsze. Ona jest silną kobietą, która znosi nieudane interesy swojego męża oraz nawroty depresji, która wspiera swoje dzieci i troskliwie się nimi opiekuje, która odkłada swoje marzenia i plany na później, poświęcając się rodzinie. Wypuszcza swoje dzieci z rodzinnego gniazda, z matczynym niepokojem obserwując ich lot, w miarę możliwości starając się wspierać i chronić. Niestety, przed tym, co miało nastąpić, nikogo nie mogła uchronić.

Moja ocena: 7/10

Książka wzrusza, a ostatni rozdział u niejednego wywoła łezkę w oku. Jednak odłożyłam Stramera dziwnie pokrzepiona – to książka ciepła, spokojna, a wojenna zawierucha w niej nie dominuje, choć wisi nad bohaterami ciemną chmurą. Zdecydowanie warto przeczytać.

Tarnów Jews in the face of war

I have been a faithful fan of Mikołaj Łoziński's talent and work since I read his debut, Reisefieber. I was surprised by the maturity of the young author. Then there was a beautiful, warm Book, written with cheeky humor. Finally, it's time for Stramer published in 2019.

Family history in difficult times

The Stramers are a family of Tarnów Jews - Natan and Rywka raise six children together. Rena, the oldest daughter, is a local beauty, Rudek is an authority for the brothers and a student of classical philology, Hesio and Salek start working for the communist party, but the younger brother is unexpectedly arrested for it. The youngest - Wela and Nusek - still hold on to their mother's skirt and watch their growing siblings with her. The gruesome history is happening in the background - Poland regains its independence, the activities of the communist party begin, the world is becoming radicalized. World War II is approaching and breaks out.

Family

What captivates in Stramer is the classicism of its prose. There are no formal experiments here, but a lot of research work to adequately present pre-war Tarnów, there are many historical figures (Piłsudski, Tetmajer, Przybyszewski). The realities of pre-war life are shown really well, but despite the dark times to come and the turmoil of war, the most important thing in Łoziński's prose is the family, and more specifically - the figure of the mother. It is Rywka who is the hidden axis of the entire Stramer mechanism, her dreams, cares and observations are the most valuable and most important here. She is a strong woman who endures her husband's failures and relapses of depression, who supports and cares for her children, who puts her dreams and plans for later, dedicating herself to her family. She releases her children from the family nest, watching their flight with maternal anxiety, trying to support and protect as much as possible. Unfortunately, she could not save anyone from what was to come.

My rating: 7/10

The book is touching, and the last chapter will bring a tear to the eye of many. However, I put down Stramer strangely reassured - it is a warm, calm book, and the turmoil of war does not dominate it, although it hangs over the characters in a dark cloud. It's definitely worth reading.
