Jeffrey Eugenides, Przekleństwa niewinności (The Virgin Suicides)

Powieść intymna

Na razie przeczytałam dwie książki Eugenidesa, Przekleństwa niewinności jako pierwsze i Middlesex jako drugie. Zachwyca mnie, że te pozycje są od siebie tak różne, i każda była na swój sposób znakomita. Eugenides jest dla mnie jednym z najciekawszych i najbardziej utalentowanych współczesnych pisarzy, więc pewnie znajdzie się tu więcej jego pozycji.

Nie traćcie czasu na życie

Przekleństwa niewinności opowiadają historię pięciu sióstr Lisbon, które, jedna po drugiej, popełniają samobójstwo w przeciągu roku. Historia jest relacjonowana przez pierwszoosobowego narratora zbiorowego – wówczas chłopców z sąsiedztwa, a obecnie mężczyzn, którzy przypominają sobie czasy swojej młodości i usiłują odtworzyć wydarzenia sprzed lat. Przez to powieść jest niezwykle oniryczna, odległa, składająca się bardziej z wrażeń i emocji, niż faktycznych zdarzeń. Ktoś kogoś widział, ktoś z kimś rozmawiał, ale wspomnienia i fakty nikną w mroku.

Wydarzenia w powieści mają niejednorodną wagę – w zależności od tego, co pamięta narrator, te smaki i zapachy wychodzą na pierwszy plan. To książka w zasadzie utkana ze wspomnień i nitek pamięci. To sprawia, że mimo wątłej fabuły, powieść Eugenidesa niezwykle działa na zmysły.

Samotne w samobójstwie, które jest czymś głębszym niż śmierć

Oczywiście, Eugenides szuka przyczyn śmierci pięknych dziewcząt, przekopuje rodzinne pamiątki, dzienniki, gazety. Jednak powody ich decyzji pozostają ukryte i nie wiadomo, co jest przyczyną dramatu. Obserwatorom Lisbonek nie udaje się nawet zbliżyć do sedna dramatu i senne miasteczko ze zdumieniem i niedowierzaniem przygląda się rodzinnej tragedii. Dziewczęta na zawsze pozostaną samotne, efemerycznie, niezrozumiane. Sądzę, że głównym tematem powieści jest nie sama śmierć, ale dojrzewanie głównych bohaterów, zmaganie ze zmnieniającym się ciałem i burzą hormonalną, próba odnalezienia się w nowym kształcie.

Moja ocena: 7/10

W zasadzie po prozę Eugenidesa można sięgać w ciemno – za każdym razem czytelnik będzie pozytywnie zaskoczony. Autorowi udaje się uniknąć truizmów, sensacji, miałkości prozy, za każdym razem pisze pięknie i ewokacyjnie. Sięgając po Przekleństwa niewinności mamy gwarancję, że przypomnimy sobie niełatwy czas własnego dojrzewania, śmierdzącej szatni po szkolnych zajęciach sportowych, ostry zapach potu oraz targające nami sprzeczne i bardzo wyraźne emocje. Mimo trudnego tematu ta książka jest napisana w piękny, intymny, subtelny sposób.

An intimate novel

So far I have read two of Eugenides' books, The Virgin Suicides as first and Middlesex as second. It amazes me that these items are so different from each other, and each was brilliant in its own way. To me, Eugenides is one of the most interesting and talented contemporary writers, so there will be more of his works here.

Don't waste your time on life

The Virgin Suicides tells the story of the five Lisbon sisters who, one after the other, commit suicide within a year. The story is told by a first-person group narrator - then neighborhood boys and now men who make recollections on their youth and try to recreate the events of years ago. As a result, the novel is extremely dreamlike, distant, consisting more of impressions and emotions than actual events. Someone saw somebody, somebody talked to someone, but memories and facts disappear in the dark.

The events in the novel have a heterogeneous weight - depending on what the narrator remembers, these tastes and smells come to the front. It's a book basically woven from memories and threads of recollections. This makes Eugenides' novel extremely sensual, despite the fragile plot.

Lonely in suicide that is deeper than death

Of course, Eugenides looks for the causes of death of the beautiful girls, digs through family mementos, journals and newspapers. However, the reasons for their decisions remain hidden, and it is not known what caused the drama. Lisbons’ observers fail to even get to the heart of the drama and the sleepy town watches the family tragedy with amazement and disbelief. Girls will always be lonely, ephemeral, misunderstood. I believe that the main theme of the novel is not death itself, but the maturing of the main characters, struggling with a changing body and a hormonal storm, an attempt to find a new shape.

My rating: 7/10

In fact, one can reach for the Eugenides' without any hesitation - the reader will be positively surprised every time. The author manages to avoid truisms, sensations, and shallow prose, each time he writes beautifully and evocatively. Reaching for The Virgin Suicides we have a guarantee that we will be immersed in the difficult time of our own adolescence, the smelly cloakroom after school sports, the sharp smell of sweat and the contradictory and very sharp emotions that haunted us then. Despite the difficult topic, this book is written in a beautiful, intimate, subtle way.
