W czwartek przed świętami rozmawiałam o tej książce z moim przyjacielem, a w piątek mój mąż przyniósł ją do domu na prezent dla kuzyna. Pokusa okazała się silniejsza, a czasu na przeczytanie książki mało. A było co czytać, bowiem w najnowszym wydaniu Znaku książka liczy sobie 542 strony, pięknie wydrukowane dwoma kolorami atramentu. Absolutna klasyka literatury dziecięcej, o której nigdy przenigdy nie słyszałam (aż do ubiegłego czwartku:)). Cóż przyniosła mi ta spóźniona podróż do dziecięcego świata?

Czasami jest tak, że na niektóre książki trafiamy za późno. Ja na przykład zbyt późno odkryłam Narnię, która dla mnie okazała się zupełnie niepociągająca, czy też całą sagę o Wiedźminie. Byłam prawie za stara na Harrego Pottera, ale zdążyłam i uwielbiam. Z Niekończącą się historią będę chyba w pół kroku. Warstwa fabularna, przebogaty świat Fantazjany, stwory, jakich nie byłabym w stanie wymarzyć ani wyśnić - nie pociągają mnie. Natomiast warstwa filozoficzna, powiązanie świata Fantazjany ze światem ludzkim, historia przemiany i odnalezienia siebie przez pyzatego chłopca Bastiana Baltazara Buksa - jak najbardziej.

Fabularnie więc powieść zaczyna się od wejścia Bastiana Baltazara Buksa w progi antykwariatu pana Karla Konrada Koreandra. 11-letni Bastian ucieka przed prześladującymi go kolegami, którzy dokuczają mu w szkole i znęcają się nad nim poza szkołą. Pan Karl musi odebrać telefon i opuszcza na chwilę fotel, w którym siedział, a wtedy uwagę Bastiana przykuwa miedziana okładka książki z połykającymi się nawzajem wężami. Zaintrygowany, sięga po książkę i od razu wie, że jej nie odda. Chyłkiem wynosi ją ze sklepu, a świadom swojego uczynku nie wraca do domu, do ojca (matka zmarła i od tego czasu jego tato pogrążony jest w depresji), ale ukrywa się na strychu swojej szkoły. Lektura pochłania go całkowicie, a Niekończąca się historia toczy się wartko.

Fantazjanie, magicznej krainie, grozi zagłada. W różnych jej częściach pojawiają się plamy nicości, które połykają coraz większe jej fragmenty, zostawiając rosnące przestrzenie niczego. Dziecięca Cesarzowa, władczyni Fantazjany, mieszkająca w pięknym białym pałacu, jest bardzo chora. Najsławniejszy w całej Fantazjanie lekarz, centaur Chajron, dostaje od cesarzowej klejnot Auryn i wyrusza na poszukiwanie bohatera, Atreju, który ma uratować Fantazjanę. Gry go odnajduje, przekazuje mu klejnot i powierza zadanie. Chłopiec po wielu przygodach - utracie swojego wiernego konika Atraksa na Bagnach Smutku, spotkaniu z Prastarą Morlą na Rogowej Górze, rozprawie z pająkiem Ygramulem w Martwych Górach i uratowaniu Smoka Szczęścia Fuchura, leczenie u uzdrowicielki Urgl i jej towarzysza, naukowca Engiwukiem, który przygotowuje chłopca na spotkanie z Ujulalą z Południowej Wyroczni, która z kolei podpowiada Atreju, że tylko człowiek spoza Fantazjany może nadać Dziecięcej Cesarzowej nowe imię, które ją uleczy i stworzy Fantazjanę na nowo. Zanim Fuchur i Atreju odkryją, że nie muszą sprowadzać człowieka do Fantazjany, przeżyją wiele niebezpiecznych przygód. W końcu staną przed bardzo już chorą cesarzową - wtedy świat Bastiana i świat Dziecięcej Cesarzowej na moment się przenikną, a chłopiec zrozumie, że to on jest wybawicielem Fantazjany. Jednak tak przeraża go nowa misja, że chociaż zna nowe imię cesarzowej, nie wypowiada go. Władczyni musi więc udać się w długą i męczącą podróż w poszukiwaniu Starca z Wędrownej Góry, który pisze historię Fantazjany w miarę tego, jak ona się toczy. Bastian po raz pierwszy widzi siebie w powieści i widzi, jak jego losy złączone są z losami tajemniczej krainy. Kiedy Starzec zaczyna pisać całą historię od nowa, chłopiec wykrzykuje nowe imię Dziecięcej Cesarzowej - Księżycowe Dziecię i nagle wpada w sam środek historii.

- sławny z dobrych uczynków - przemienia paskudne stworzenia Achaje w śmieszne Szlamuffy - traci wspomnienia o innych dzieciach w szkole, które gnębiły go i wyzywały;

- mądry - zapomina o szkole, o strychu i o książce, którą czytał;

- wreszcie pragnie władzy - za radą czarodziejki Xayidy pragnie odebrać władzę Dziecięcej Cesarzowej i zostać królem Fantazjany. Uderza Atreju mieczem Sikandą i rani chłopca w pierś. W Fantazjanie wybucha bratobójcza i krwawa wojna, a Bastian trafia do Miasta Starych Cesarzy, gdzie spotyka mnóstwo ludzi takich jak on, którzy usiłowali zdobyć władzę w Fantazjanie, i przez to stracili drogę powrotną do siebie. Pragnienia Bastiana zaczynają się zmieniać - pragnie przynależeć do wspólnoty - poznaje lud Yskalnari i przemierza z nim Morze Mgieł, by dotrzeć do Domu Przemian i mieszkającej w nim czarodziejki Aiuoli. Podróż przez Morze Mgieł kosztuje go wspomnienia o świecie, z którego pochodził i o indywidualności każdego człowieka, a pragnienie bycia kochanym - wspomnienia o ojcu i matce. W Domu Przemian Bastian odnajduje swoją Prawdziwą Wolę - a jest nią miłość. Jest to jego ostatnie Pragnienie, a jedyne, co pozostało Bastianowi, to świadomość, jak się nazywa. Rusza w podróż, by odnaleźć źródło wody życia, które wróci go do jego świata. Trafia do kopalni Minroud i górnika Yora, gdzie wraz z nim będzie usiłował odnaleźć sen, który coś by dla niego znaczył. Po wielu dniach trudu odnajduje obraz swojego ojca, ale zapomina swoje imię. Na drodze do wody życia atakują go Szlamuffy i chłopiec traci bezcenny obraz. W tym momencie na ratunek przychodzą mu Atreju i Fuchur, a Bastian oddaje im Auryn. Oddając ostatnią cenną rzecz przyjacielowi, chłopiec przenosi się do wód życia i z pomocą Atreju i Fuchura dalej do swojego świata. Uradowany z odnalezienia syna ojciec sam również kąpie się w wodach życia - z jego oczu płyną wreszcie pierwsze łzy.

Bastian idzie do antykwariatu pana Koreandra, by przyznać się do kradzieży książki, ale tu - ku swojemu zaskoczeniu - odkrywa, że łączy go ze starym antykwariuszem ta sama historia...

Fantazjana zanika, bo ludzie nie czytają książek. Dlatego poszczególne jej krainy, nieodwiedzane przez żadne czytelnicze umysły, zaczynają znikać. Fantazjana to kraina, do której trafia czytelnik, by przeżyć przemianę. Natomiast kiedy nie ma książkowego połączenia, postaci z Fantazjany, które wpadają w plamy Nicości, stają się tylko kłamstwami, wymysłami. Odłączone od swojego prawdziwego świata nie mają już mocy przemieniania czytelnika, a stają się mrzonką. W zasadzie każdy z nas, czytelników, ma swoją Fantazjanę, która odwiedza z większą lub mniejszą częstotliwością, tworzy własne światy, przechodzi przemiany. Bo przecież są książki, które nas odmieniają, uwrażliwiają, poruszają.

"Niekończąca się historia" ze swoją metatekstualnością, to piękny prezent na koniec czytelniczego roku. A kuzyn? Cóż, będzie musiał na tę książkę jeszcze trochę poczekać...

On Thursday before Christmas I talked about this book with my friend, and on Friday my husband brought it home as a gift for his cousin. The temptation was stronger and the time to read the book was extremely short. And there was plenty to read, because in the latest edition of the book it has 542 pages, beautifully printed with two colors of ink. An absolute classic of children's literature that I've never heard of (until last Thursday :)). What has this belated journey to the childhood world brought to me?

 Sometimes it's too late for some books. For example, I discovered Narnia too late as it turned out to be completely unattractive for me, or the entire The Witcher saga. I was almost too old for Harry Potter, but I've just made it and loved it. With The Neverending Story I will probably be in half a step. The story layer, the world of fantasy Fantastica, creatures that I would not be able to dream or dream about - do not attract me. On the other hand, the philosophical layer, the connection of Fantastica's world with the human world, the history of transformation and finding himself by the chubby boy Bastian Baltazar Buks - the most.

So the plot begins with the entry of Bastian Balthasar Bux at the doorstep of the antiquarian workshop of Mr. Carl Conrad Coreander. 11-year-old Bastian escapes from his haunting friends who tease him at school and bully him outside the school. Mr. Carl has to pick up the phone and leaves the chair in which he sits for a moment, and then Bastian's attention is caught by the copper cover of the book with the snakes swallowing each other. Intrigued, he reaches for the book and immediately knows that he will not give it back. He drops her out of the store and, aware of his deeds, does not return home, to his father (his mother died and his father has been depressed ever since), but he is hiding in the attic of his school. The reading absorbs him completely, and The Neverending Story unwinds.

Fantastica, a magical land, is threatened with destruction. In its various parts patches of nothingness that swallow larger fragments of it appear, leaving the growing spaces of emptiness. The Childlike Empress, the ruler of Fantastica, living in a beautiful white palace, is very sick. The most famous physician in the whole Fantastica, centaur Cairon, receives the Auryn jewel from the empress and sets off to search for the hero, Atreyu, who is to save Fantastica. He finds him, gives him a jewel and entrusts him with the task. A boy after many adventures - losing his faithful horse in Swamps of Sorrow, meeting with Morla the Aged One on Horny Hill, dealing with spider Ygramul the Many in Dead Mountains and rescuing Luckdragon Falkor, session with the healer Urgl and her companion, scientist Engiwuk, who prepares the boy for a meeting with Uyulala from the South Oracle, which, in turn, tells Atreyu that only a man outside Fantastica can give the Childlike Empress a new name that will heal her and create the Fantastica again. Before Falkor and Atreyu discover that they do not have to bring a man to Fantastica, they will survive many dangerous adventures. In the end, they will face a very ill empress - then the world of Bastian and the world of the Childlike Empress will penetrate for a moment, and the boy will understand that he is the awaited hero of Fantastica. However, he is so terrified by the new mission that although he knows the new name of the empress, he does not say it. The queen must go on a long and tiring journey in search of The Old Man from the Wandering Mountain, who writes the story of Fantasiana as it unveils itself. For the first time, Bastian sees himself in the novel and sees his fate merged with the fate of the mysterious land. When The Old Man begins to write the whole story from scratch, the boy exclaims the new name of the Childlike Empress - the Moon Child and suddenly falls into the middle of the history.

Here, for the reader, the actual action of the novel begins not entirely caught up in the plot. Bastian Baltazar Buks must invent the whole Fantastica again, give its creatures the right names, and at the same time - he will go through a very dangerous transformation process. The boy first of all wants to be:
- handsome and strong - and he forgets that he was once squat;
- tough and hardened - he forgets that he used to be tearful and weak;
- courageous - he forgets that he was once afraid;
- the best poet - he forgets how he told various stories in his world;
- famous of good deeds - he transforms Achay's nasty creatures into ridiculous funny creatures - losing memories of other children in the school who oppressed him and challenged him;
- wise - he forgets about school, attic and about the book he read;
- finally, he wants power - with the advice of the enchantress, Xayide wants to take away the authority of the Childlike Empress and become the king of Fantastica. He strikes Atreyju with the sword Sikanda and hurts the boy in the chest. A fratricidal and bloody war breaks out in Fantastica , and Bastian goes to the City of Old Emperors, where he meets a lot of people like him who tried to gain power in Fantastica, and thus lost their way back home. Baltazar discovers how much Auryn has already taken away from him and how little he has left.

Bastian's desires begin to change - he wants to belong to the community - he meets the people of Yskalnari and travels with them through the Sea of ​​Mists to reach the House of Changes and the sorceress Aiuoli who lives in it. Journey through the Sea of ​​Mists costs him memories of the world from which he came and about the individuality of each man, and the desire to be loved - the memories of his father and mother. At the House of Changes, Bastian finds his True Will - and that is love. This is his last Desire, and the only thing left to Bastian is the awareness of his name. He sets out on a journey to find the source of the Water of Life that will return him to his world. He goes to the mine Minroud and miner Yora, where he will try to find a dream that would mean something to him. After many days of trouble, he finds the picture of his father, but he forgets his name. On the way to the Water of Life the Schlaffmuffs attacks him and the boy loses the priceless painting. At that moment, Atreyu and Falkor come to his rescue, and Bastian gives them the Auryn. Giving away the last precious thing to a friend, the boy moves to the Waters of Life and with the help of Atreyu and Falkor further to his world. Glad to find his son, the father also bathes himself in the waters of life - first tears flow from his eyes.

Bastian goes to Mr. Coreander's antique shop to admit to the theft of the book, but here - to his surprise - he discovers that he shares the same story with the old antiquarian ...

Fantastica disappears because people don't read books. Therefore, its individual lands, not visited by any reading minds, begin to disappear. Fantastica is a land on which the reader undergoes the change. However, when there is no book connection, the characters from Fantastica who fall into the spots of Nothingness become only lies and inventions, a hear-say. Disconnected from their real world, they no longer have the power to transform the reader and they become a lie. In principle, each of us, readers, has its own Fantastica, which they visit with a greater or lesser frequency, creates their own worlds, undergo transformation. Because, after all, there are books that change us, sensitize and move us.

The Neverending Story with its metatextuality is a beautiful gift at the end of the reading year. And the cousin? Well, he will have to wait a bit longer for this book ...
