Przyjaciółka może i genialna, książka już niekoniecznie
Po drugie, cały
czas czekałam na zapowiadany efekt wow, na rozbłysk pisarskiego geniuszu, ale
się nie doczekałam. To właśnie to trudno definiowalne i czytelnikozależne
„coś”, które jedne książki posiadają, a inne nie. Dla mnie Ferrante jest
przereklamowana, a cztery tomy zmieściły by się w jeden. Książka jest trochę
nudna, stosunkowo mało się dzieje, a potem nagle się urywa, nie przynosząc
odpowiedzi. Portret Neapolu dla mnie pozostawiał trochę do życzenia, mogłoby to
być w zasadzie każde włoskie miasto z lepszymi i gorszymi dzielnicami. Dobrze
został oddany klimat lat 50-tych, z zachwytem nowym telewizorem, podziwem i
zazdrością dla nielicznych samochodów, rozkwitem drobnego handlu i odrodzeniem
gospodarki.
Jedna ważna rzecz
umnknęła w tłumaczeniu – rozróżnienie na język gwarowy i literacki,
zasugerowane tylko w narracji. Nie widać go w dialogach, bohaterowie wciąż
brzmią tak samo. Kiedy czytałam karkołomne tłumaczenie Krótkiej historii siedmiu zabójstw Roberta Sudół, jego autor starał
się oddać wielość gwar i dialektów z powieści Marlona Jamesa. Tekst celowo miał
wiele błędów, inaczej stosowaną interpunkcję, niezgrabności stylistyczne.
Jednak narracje różniły się znacznie, a tłumacz to oddał. Tutaj różnic pomiędzy
piękną literacką włoszczyzną a uliczną gwarą w ogóle nie słychać.
Dla mnie spore
rozczarowanie, a ponieważ czuję się również oszukana, nie będę chciała kupić
pozostałych części tetralogii.

Perhaps the friend is brilliant, but the book not so much
I have been hearing about Elena Ferrante's books for quite a while now. I know that the name is only a literary nickname, which could stand for male, female or multiple authors. I also googled that there are so far eleven books published under this name, including four from the Neapolitan novels. My Brilliant Friend, published in 2011 in Italy and in 2014 in Poland, is the first part of this four-volume series. However, after reading the first volume, I have little desire to reach for the next parts. I'll explain why.
First, because the book does not answer the question posed. At the beginning of the novel 60-year-old Elena Greco learns that her longtime friend Lila Cerullo had disappeared. So she decides to solve this mystery and starts to tell the story of their lives. The girls’ childhood, their school troubles, first loves and experiences, the transformation from teenagers into women until they reach 16 years of age and Lili gets married are referred in a meticulous way. So we still don't know why the more intriguing of the two friends has disappeared. But don't worry, readers, there are only three more volumes left to solve the puzzle, which is about 1,200 pages. I really prefer Nights and Days, which immediately suggests the size of the reading and are properly titled. The second saga that I’ve read on the Neshov family by the Norwegian writer Anne Ragde also comes to mind. The Scandinavian cycle with its coldness, funeral parlor and unfavorable nature made a warmer impression on me than the story from the stuffy Naples.Secondly, I was waiting for the announced ‘wow’ effect, for a flash of the writing genius, but I didn't get to see it. This is the hard-to-define and reader-dependent ‘something‘ that some books have and others don’t. For me, Ferrante is overrated, and four volumes would fit into one. The book is a bit boring, relatively little happens, and then suddenly stops with no answer. The portrait of Naples left a bit to be desired for me, it could be basically any Italian city with better and worse districts. The atmosphere of the 1950s was well captured, with admiration for the new TV set, envy for the few cars, the flourishing of small trade and the revival of the economy.
The list of characters at the beginning of the book is unusual, as if in a drama. This is due to the multiplicity of heroes, although for me it was not necessary. There are so many characters, and Ferrante has made a titanic effort to portray them fairly accurately along with their desires, activities and talents.One important thing was lost in translation - the distinction between dialect and literary language, suggested only in the narrative. It is not seen in the dialogues, the characters still sound the same. When I was reading the crazy translation of A Brief History of Seven Killings by Robert Sudół, its author tried to convey the multiplicity of dialects in the novel by Marlon James. The text intentionally had many errors, punctuation was used differently, the style was purposefully faulty. However, the narratives varied considerably, and the translator rendered it. Here, the differences between the beautiful literary Italian and the street dialect cannot be heard at all.
Quite a disappointment for me, and since I feel cheated as well, I won't want to buy the rest of the tetralogy.
