Joe Alex, Cicha jak ostatnie tchnienie

Joe Alex, autor serii kryminałów o pisarzu i detektywie Joe Alexie, to znany polski tłumacz Maciej Słomczyński. Jego kryminały cieszą się ogromną popularnością i zostały przetłumaczone na 13 języków. Ponieważ kilka z nich od dłuższego czasu stało na mojej półce, postanowiłam sprawdzić, co są warte.

Klimatyczny kryminał oparty na dobrych wzorcach

Na mojej półce Joe Alex, którego nigdy wcześniej nie czytałam, stał koło rzesz książek Agaty Christie. Jak się okazało, wbrew pozorom nie było to przypadkowe. Zbieżności z twórczością słynnej Angielki są liczne. Cicha jak ostatnie tchnienie trochę przypomina Dziesięciu Murzynków. 10 osób udaje się celebrować wydanie pięciomilionowego egzemplarza książki Amandy Judd, opublikowanej przez wydawnictwo Quaredon Press.

Sieć ciekawych zależności widoczna jest zatem gołym okiem. Cała dziesiątka zostaje zaproszona do zakupionego przez Melwina Quaredona starego zamczyska, gdzie mają zabawić się w odnalezienie szkieletu zamordowanej w nim przed setkami lat niewiernej żony sir Edwarda de Vere, lady Ewy. Jest miejsce na rozmowy, inspirujące spotkania, zwiedzanie odrestaurowanego zabytku. Jednak jedna z osób biorąca udział w zabawie zostaje w brutalny sposób zamordowana i rozpoczyna się prowadzone przez Joe Alexa i Beniamina Parkera śledztwo, zakończone oczywiście zaskakującym sukcesem. Siateczka powiązań jest gęsta, fabuła toczy się wartko i coraz to więcej faktów zaczyna wychodzić na światło dzienne. Na koniec tej zabawy trupów będzie znacznie więcej, bo aż cztery. Co doprowadzi do tak tragicznego finału? Warto przekonać się samemu.

Fantastyczny jest klimat powieści, ponura atmosfera starego zamczyska, niesamowici, wyraziści bohaterowie, którzy chętnie dzielą się swoimi pasjami i zainteresowaniami, ich motywy. Mimo tak sporej liczby postaci każdego da się śledzić, zidentyfikować, każdy zapada w pamięć. Zakończenie książki również jest niecodzienne. Joe Alex podsuwa liczne wskazówki, niewinne zdania, na które patrząc po rozwiązaniu zagadki patrzy się z miną "jak ja mogłam tego nie zauważyć?" Tocząca się w odosobnieniu akcja z ograniczoną liczbą podejrzanych, nie wszystkie fakty podane czytelnikowi, jasna chronologia wydarzeń, bohater detektyw i towarzyszący mu przyjaciel - to wszystko łączy Słomczyńskiego z Christie.

Jedyne co mi się nie podoba, to tytuły kryminałów polskiego autora, stanowiące cytaty z różnorakich dzieł. Kolejna książka na moim stosiku nosi tytuł Cichym ścigałem go lotem... To nijak nie zapada w pamięć i niestety również nie bardzo kojarzy się z treścią książki. Tendencyjny tytuł typu "Morderstwo w zamczysku" albo "Zagadka starego zamku" byłby chyba lepszy. Ale cóż ja mogę wiedzieć, jestem tylko zachłannym czytelnikiem, a nie autorem poczytnych kryminałów.

Joe Alex, an author of a series of detective stories about the writer and detective Joe Alex, is a well-known Polish translator Maciej Słomczyński. His detective stories are extremely popular and have been translated into 13 languages. Since several of them have been on my shelf for a long time, I decided to check their worth.

An atmospheric detective story based on good standards

On my shelf Joe Alex, whom I had never read before, was standing right next to a multitude of books by Agata Christie. As it turned out, this was not accidental. The convergences with the work of the famous English writer are numerous. Quiet as the last breath is a bit like And Then There Were None. Ten people gather to celebrate the release of Amanda Judd's five-million copy of a book, published by Quaredon Press. Here is the list of collected individuals:

1. Melwin Quaredon, the owner of the publishing house,

2. Amanda Judd, a popular writer, the reason of the gathering,

3. Grace Mapleton, the secretary of Amanda Judd, previously the secretary of Mr. Quaredon at Quaredon Press, a woman of unearthly beauty,

4. Dorothy Ormsby, a literary critic and a journalist,

4. Frederick Redland, an owner of an impressive collection of all kinds of artifacts related to crime,

5. Jordan Kedge, an author of very popular detective stories, not active any more,

6. Sir Harold Edington, the Undersecretary of State,

7. Commissar Benamin Parker, the deputy head of the Scotland Yard Criminal Department, close friend of Joe Alex;

8. Dr. Cecil Harcroft, personal physician of Melwin Quaredon;

9. Mrs. Alexandra Wardell, a widow, an author of ghost books;

10. Frank Tyler, husband of Amanda Judd, a photographer and a beginner graphic designer.

The network of interesting dependencies is therefore visible to the naked eye. All ten are invited to the old castle purchased by Melwin Quaredon, where they are supposed to have fun finding the skeleton of Sir Edward de Vere, Lady Eve, who was murdered in it hundreds of years ago. There is a place for conversations, inspiring meetings, visiting the restored monument. However, one of the participants of the gane is brutally murdered and the investigation led by Joe Alex and Benjamin Parker begins, and leads to a suprising solution. The network of connections is dense, the plot rolls rapidly and more and more facts begin to come to light. At the end of this game there will be many more corpses, as many as four. What will lead to such a tragic finale? It is worth to see for yourself.

The atmosphere of the novel is fantastic, the gloomy charm of the old castle, amazing, expressive heroes who willingly share their passions and interests, their motives. Despite such a large number of characters, everyone can be traced, identified, everyone is easy to be remembered. The ending of the book is also unusual. Joe Alex offers numerous clues, innocent sentences cearly indicating the wrongdoers. When one rereads them after solving the puzzle it is easy to wonder how could we overlook it? An isolation with a limited number of suspects, not all facts given to the reader, a clear chronology of events, a detective hero and his friend - all this connects Słomczyński to Christie.

The only thing I don't like are the titles of the crime stories by the Polish author which are quotes from various works. The next book on my pile is called Chased with a silent flight... It is difficult to remember and not associated with the content of the book. A tendentious title like "Murder in a castle" or "Riddle of the old castle" would probably be better. But what do I know, I'm just an avid reader, not the author of the commonly-read detective stories.

Anyways, the book can and should be recommended!
