Po tegorocznej edycji Buy a book Wrocławskiego hospicjum dla dzieci (6-7 września 2019) moja biblioteka rozrosła się o 45 pozycji, ale również tempo czytania dramatycznie wzrosło. Ubiegłe dwa tygodnie przyniosły lekturę pięciu bardzo nierównych książek, rozbudziły mój apetyt na czytanie i spełniły kilka bibliofilskich marzeń. Tak właśnie w moje ręce trafiła książka Unterzakhn Leelai Corman. Wyjątkowe jest to, że jest to powieść graficzna, niepierwsza, jaką przeczytałam, ale wielkiego doświadczenia i rozeznania na tym polu nie mam.
Różne jak dwie krople czystej wody
Unterzakhn to historia dwóch sióstr, Fanyi i Esther Feinberg, które wybierają zupełnie różne ścieżki. Fanya dostaje szansę na nieformalną edukację i pomaga w gabinecie Broni, kobiecie, która pomaga innym kobietom podczas porodów, potrafi wywoływać poronienie niezagrażające życiu matki, zna się na ziołach i naturalnych metodach antykoncepcji. Esther z kolei pociąga świat błyskotek, trafia do burdelu Pani Lucille jako pomocnica, uczy się tańca i w wieku 13 lat zostaje zgwałcona przez jednego z klientów. Zaczyna więc pracować jako prostytutka, zostaje zauważona podczas jednego z wodewilów przez wpływowego krytyka i mecenasa sztuki i zostaje jego nałożnicą. W tle toczy się wielka historia - zakochany w Fanyi Sal zaciąga się do wojska i podczas walk traci nogę. Ojciec sióstr, Izaak, stracił swoją rodzinę w pogromach kozackich w Rosji w 1895 roku i rok później przypłynął do Nowego Jorku statkiem. Mimo całej swojej wiedzy Fanya zachodzi w ciążę z Salem, decyduje się zatrzymać dziecko i umiera przy porodzie, a maleństwem opiekuje się jej "występna" siostra.Prosta historia, głęboki przekaz
Corman udaje się oddać realia epoki, ciężkie życie imigrantów na początku XIX wieku i w latach 20-tych, rozkwit secesji, bliską i trudną relację sióstr. Dotyka również trudnej sytuacji kobiet, braku wpływu na możliwość decydowania o ilości dzieci, drastycznych środkach podejmowanych, by ograniczyć liczbę niechcianego potomstwa. Fanya uparcie odrzuca zaloty i oświadczyny Sala, który decyduje się w końcu ożenić z Theresą, dziewczyną z sąsiedztwa, której nie kocha, bo uważa, że małżeństwo to instrument opresji kobiet i nie przyniesie jej nic dobrego. W ten sposób również sama wyrządza sobie krzywdę, jak również rodzinie Sala i jemu samemu. Sal jest przekonany, że Fanya jest miłością jego życia, więc porzuca rodzinę i włóczy się po ulicach wielkiego miasta, szukając swojej ukochanej. Odnajduje ją jednak zbyt późno...
Strona graficzna
Czarno-białe ilustracje, prosta, ekspresywna kreska, ręcznie pisany tekst z dużą ilością dobrze znanych nam słów ("pirogn", "idiotke"), zapożyczeń z różnych języków, niepoprawnego, przekręconego angielskiego sprawa, że książka jest bardzo dynamiczna i czyta się ją (i ogląda) z wielką przyjemnością. Kobieca perspektywa i kobiece dramaty, a jednocześnie głębokie, skomplikowane relacje bohaterów sprawiają, że książka jest wiarygodna i naprawdę poruszająca. Z przyjemnością do niej wrócę!

After this year's Buy a book edition of the Wrocław's hospice for children (September 6-7, 2019), my library grew by 45 items, but also the reading rate increased dramatically. The past two weeks have brought five very uneven books, aroused my appetite for reading and fulfilled several bibliophile dreams. That's how the book Unterzakhn by Leela Corman came into my hands. It is unique that it is a graphic novel, not the first one I've read, but I do not have much experience and insight in this field.
Different as two drops of pure water
Unterzakhn is the story of two sisters, Fanya and Esther Feinberg, who choose completely different paths. Fanya gets a chance for informal education and helps in the office of Bronia, a woman who helps other women during childbirth, can cause a miscarriage that does not threaten the life of the mother, knows herbs and natural methods of contraception. Esther, in turn, is attracted to the world of trinkets, goes to the brothel of Mrs. Lucille as a helper, learns to dance and at the age of 13 is raped by one of the clients. So she starts working as a prostitute, she is noticed during one of the vaudevilles by an influential art critic and patron and becomes his concubine. In the background the wold's history is going on - Sal, in love with Fanya, enlists in the army and loses his leg during the war. The father of the sisters, Isaac, lost his family in the Cossack pogroms in Russia in 1895 and a year later came to New York by ship. Despite all her knowledge, Fanya becomes pregnant with Salem, decides to keep the baby and dies at childbirth, and her baby is looked after by her "mischievous" sister.Simple story, deep message
Corman manages to reflect the realities of the era, the hard lives of immigrants in the early nineteenth century and in the 1920s, the flourishing of secession, close and difficult relationships between the sisters. It also depicts the difficult situation of women, the lack of influence on the ability to decide on the number of children, drastic measures taken to limit the number of unwanted offspring. Fanya stubbornly rejects Sal's courting and proposal, so he finally decides to marry Theresa, a girl from the neighborhood he doesn't love. Fanya perceives marriage as an instrument of female oppression that will not bring her any good. In this way she also harms herself, as well as the Sal's family and himself. Sal is convinced that Fanya is the love of his life, so he abandons his family and wanders the streets of the big city, looking for his beloved. However, he finds her too late ...On the graphic side of the novel
Black and white illustrations, a simple, expressive line, handwritten text with a lot of well-known words ("pirogn", "idiot"), borrowings from various languages, incorrect, distorted English, the book is very dynamic and makes a great read. The female perspective and female dramas, as well as the deep, complicated relationships of the characters make the book credible and really moving. I will be happy to come back to it!
