Czarowna historia

Powieść Ja śpiewam, a góry tańczą katalońskiej pisarki Irene Solá jest przesycona dziwnością. Już sam tytuł sugeruje, że przyroda jest tu równoważnym bohaterem, narratorem na równi z bohaterami. Ta wielogłosowa książka rysuje historię, w której łatwo jest się pogubić, ale która złapie uważnego czytelnika za serce.

Bohaterowie w tle

Urodzona w 1990 roku Irene Solá ma za sobą swój pisarski debiut – w 2012 roku opublikowała tomik wierszy Bestia, a pierwszą powieść The Dams w 2017 roku. Ja śpiewam, a góry tańczą to dojrzała proza, mocno dźwięcząca poezją, skupiająca się na historiach i ludowych opowieściach z górskich rejonów. Natura jest w niej równorzędnym narratorem, od grzybów, przez sarny i niedźwiedzie, po góry i chmury, dzięki czemu zyskujemy zupełnie inny, wielopoziomowy obraz, a bohaterowie książki tylko się w nim przewijają, więc ich historię trzeba śledzić w słowach innych.

W poszukiwaniu przebaczenia

Sama fabuła jest dramatyczna, ale ta dramatyczność rozpływa się w narracji. Mia i Hilari to rodzeństwo wychowujące się razem w górach. Ich ojca Domèneca zabił piorun, więc wychowaniem dzieci zajmuje się tylko matka Sió. Wkrótce z bratem i siostrą zaprzyjaźnia się Jaume, syn niepiśmiennych rodziców zwanych w wiosce gigantami (ze względu na ich potężną budowę). Między nastoletnimi Mią i Jaumem szybko rodzi się uczucie, jednak tylko do wypadku – przez przypadek podczas polowania na sarnę Jaume śmiertelnie zranił Hilariego, za co trafił do więzienia na kilka lat. Mimo, ze zakochana dziewczyna usiłuje się z nim skontaktować, ten odrzuca wszystkie prośby o widzenie, i dopiero potrącenie sarny kieruje go do domu Mii w poszukiwaniu wybaczenia.

Wielogłosowość narracji

Tak wstrząsająca fabuła zaskakuje spokojem narracji, poetyckością języka. Wydarzenia są rozwodnione przez wielogłosowość relacji, a bohaterowie często pojawiają się w oddali, wzmiankowani, przykryci innymi historiami, które dla innych narratorów mają większe znaczenie. To ciekawy zabieg, który uspokaja przebieg całej akcji, ale też szereguje historie bohaterów na równi z innymi narracjami, innymi światami (zwierzęcym, roślinnym). Człowiek jest tylko elementem układanki, a nie głównym motorem sprawczym, jest zależny od kaprysów natury (Domènec zabity przez piorun). Jednak proza katalońskiej pisarki mieści również baśniowe postaci – pojawiają się wodne panny, wiedźmy, postaci ze świata legend, i również mają swoją szansę w opowiedzeniu swojej wersji historii.

Książka Irene Solá jest arcyciekawa – i z formalnego, strukturalnego punktu widzenia, i z poziomu fabuły. Zaryzykowałabym twierdzenie, że zarzuca na czytelnika czar, wymuszając skupienie i uwagę. Jeśli dodatkowo było się na Europejskiej nocy literatury i niektóre fragmenty czytane są w głowie głosem i w interpretacji pani Edyty Jungowskiej, to jest już naprawdę dobrze. Mogę z czystym sumieniem polecić tę niedługą lekturę.

A story that casts a spell

The novel When I Sing, Mountains Dance by the Catalan writer Irene Solá is filled with strangeness. The title itself suggests that nature is a ligitimate hero here, a narrator on an equal footing with the characters. This multi-voiced book tells a story in which it is easy to get lost, but which will capture the heart of an attentive reader.

Heroes in the background

Born in 1990, Irene Solá made her debut as a writer in 2012, when she published a book of poems called The Beast, and her first novel The Dams in 2017. When I Sing, Mountains Dance is mature prose, strongly resonant with poetry, focusing on stories and folk tales from mountain regions. Nature is an equal narrator in it, from mushrooms, through deer and bears, to mountains and clouds, thanks to which we gain a completely different, multi-level picture, and the book's characters only pass through it, so their story must be followed in the words of others.

In search of forgiveness

The plot itself is dramatic, but this drama dissolves in the narrative. Mia and Hilari are siblings growing up together in the mountainous region. Their father Domènec was killed by a lightning, so only their mother Sió is responsible for raising the children. Soon, Jaume, the son of illiterate parents called giants in the village (due to their massive posture), becomes friends with the brother and sister. A feeling quickly develops between teenagers Mia and Jaume, but only until an accident - while hunting a deer, Jaume mortally wounded Hilari, for which he was imprisoned for several years. Even though the indatuated girl tries to contact him, he rejects all requests to see him, and only many years later, after hitting a deer, he goes to Mia's house in search of forgiveness.

Multi-voiced narrative

Such a shocking plot surprises with the calmness of the narrative and the poetry of the language. Events are diluted by the multi-voiced nature of the accounts, and the characters often appear in the distance, mentioned, covered by other stories that are more important to other narrators. This is an interesting procedure that calms down the entire action, but also ranks the characters' stories on par with other narratives, other worlds (animal, plant). Man is only a piece of the puzzle, not the main driving force, he is dependent on the whims of nature (like Domènec killed by lightning). However, the Catalan writer's prose also includes fairy-tale characters - water maidens, witches, characters from the world of legends, and they also have their chance to tell their version of the story.

Irene Solá's book is extremely interesting - both from a formal, structural point of view, and from the plot level. I would venture to say that it casts a spell over the reader, forcing focus and attention. Additionally, if you were at the European Night of Literature and some fragments are read in your head with the voice and interpretation of an actress Edyta Jungowska, then the book gathers another depth. I can wholeheartedly recommend this short read.
