Książka "Lewą reką przez prawe ramię" to jedyna jak na razie przetłumaczona na polski książka norweskiej pisarki Selmy Lønning Aarø, z całkiem bogatego dorobku. Wydana została przez wydawnictwo Smak słowa w "serii z przyprawami" - jak pisze wydawnictwo: "powieści głównie przez kobiety, o kobietach i dla kobiet napisane". Nie do końca czuję ideę pisania inaczej do kobiet i do mężczyzn albo tworzenia osobnych serii kierunkowanych do płci, bo dla mnie literatura była i jest czymś uniwersalnym, dla każdego.W książce przeplatają się historie dwóch rodzin - Hellen Müller oraz jej rodziców, cierpiącej na Altzheimera matki Marty i opiekującego się nią ojca Georga, oraz Simona, jego poparzonej żony Almy, córki Elwiry i zmarłej w dzieciństwie na nowotwór córeczki Leny. Hellen ma romans z Simonem i spodziewa się z nim dziecka, jednak w dniu, w którym chce mu o tym powiedzieć kochanków na ulicy dostrzega córka Simona, Elvira, i gwiżdże na ojca w charakterystyczny sposób, a ten zauważa ją i wbiega na ulicę, tuż pod samochód. W szpitalu zapada w śpiączkę.
W zasadzie każdy z bohaterów coś ukrywa. Marta porzuciła męża w dniu jego 45 urodzin, by popłynąć w rejs z 10 lat od siebie młodszym laryngologiem. W trakcie tej przygody straciła palec (ma teraz metalowy zastępnik) i wróciła do męża, ale okoliczności wypadku pozostają tajemnicą. Helen podczas swojego pobytu na Alasce była Królową i pocieszycielką rybaków, a jej przygoda skończyła się, kiedy zaszła w ciążę i wróciła do domu usunąć dziecko. Teraz ukrywa swoją kolejną ciążę przed ojcem i kochankiem. Alma ukrywa przed mężem swoje zdrady i ledwo radzi sobie ze smutkiem po stracie dziecka i części tak niegdyś pięknej twarzy. Elvira kłamie, by zyskać szacunek wśród swoich znajomych, ale obraca się to przeciwko niej.
Książka nie jest długa, czyta się ją szybko, ale bez szczególnej przyjemności. Warstwa fabularna jest bardzo pocięta i poprzestawiana w czasie, więc zabrało mi chwilę, by odpowiednio połączyć bohaterów i zorientować się, kto jest kim dla kogo i dlaczego. Pierwszy rozdział, opisujący dramatyczny wypadek Simona, napisany jest w trzeciej osobie i to stawia przed czytelnikiem mur, dystans, którego już potem nie potrafiłam przekroczyć, mimo późniejszej pierwszoosobowej narracji.Jest to też powieść o odchodzeniu, starzeniu się, doświadczaniu choroby i radzeniu sobie z nią (lub nie). Wieje więc smutkiem, chłodem i samotnością, czego najlepszym przykładem jest ukraińska sprzątaczka Małgosia, która kończy jako słuchacz zwierzeń Almy, wcale nie czując się z tym komfortowo.
Nie żałuję, że przeczytałam tą książkę, ale nie będę do niej wracać ani szczególnie tęsknić. Zobaczymy, co przyniosą kolejne tomy "serii z przyprawami", bo na razie jest jednak nieco mdło.

The book The left hand through the right shoulder is the only book translated to Polish by Norwegian author Selma Lønning Aarø, from her quite rich output. It was published by the Smak słowa publishing house in the "series with spices" - as the publisher says: "novels written mainly by women, about women and for women". I do not quite feel the idea of writing differently for male and female audience or to create separate series directed to gender, because for me literature was and is something universal for everyone.
The book consistsa of stories of two families - Hellen Müller and her parents, the mother Marta suffering from Altzheimer and her father Georg, who looks after her, and Simon, his burned wife Alma, his daughter Elwira's and his younger daughter Lena who had died during her childhood form cancer. Hellen has an affair with Simon and is expecting his child, but on the day when she wants to tell him the bnews on the street, Elvira, Simon's daughter, sees them together and whistles at her father in a characteristic way. He notices her and runs into the street, right in front of the oncoming car. He falls into a coma after being brought to the hospital.
In principle, each of the characters hides something. Marta left her husband on the day of his 45th birthday to sail on a cruise with a 10-year-old younger ENT specialist. During this adventure, she lost her finger (she now has a metal replacement) and returned to her husband, but the circumstances of the accident remain a mystery. Helen, during her stay in Alaska, was the Queen and the comforter of the fishermen, and her adventure ended when she became pregnant and returned home to remove the baby. Now she hides her next pregnancy from her father and from her lover. Alma hides her betrayals from her husband and barely copes with the sadness after losing a child and a part of her once-beautiful face. Elvira is lying to gain respect among his friends, but that turns against her.
The book is not long, you read it quickly, but without special pleasure. The story layer is cut and postponed, so it took me a while to connect the characters and find out who is who for whom and why. The first chapter, describing Simon's dramatic accident, is in the third person narration and this puts the reader in front of the wall, a distance that I could not cross later, despite the subsequent first-person narrative.
It is also a novel about going away, getting old, experiencing the disease and dealing with it (or not). It emanates with sadness, coldness and loneliness, the best example of which is the Ukrainian cleaner Małgosia, who ends up listening to Alma's confidences, not feeling comfortable with it at all.
I do not regret that I have read this book, but I will not go back to it or especially miss it. We am looking forward to what the next volumes of the "spice series" will bring, as for now it is a bit bland.
