Tak też trafiłam na książkę Johna Treherne Zbrodnia w raju W poszukiwaniu utopii na Galapagos i udało mi się ją zaskakująco szybko dopaść w bibliotece i jeszcze szybciej przeczytać. 250 stron to lektura akurat na dwa wieczory.

XX-wieczni podróżnicy idealiści

Książka przyniosła mi parę zaskoczeń. Po pierwsze, została napisana w 1983 roku, a więc czterdzieści lat temu. Da się to wyczuć w stylu, w jakim książka jest napisana – trochę trąci myszką. Dodatkowo autor nie był zawodowym pisarzem, a entomologiem, badaczem owadów w różnych zakątkach świata. Podczas jednej ze swoich podróży, na Galapagos, usłyszał ciekawą historię grupy ludzi, którzy w różnej kolejności osiedli na ekwadorskiej wyspie Floreana w latach 20-tych i 30-tych XX wieku. Najpierw na wyspę trafiła dziwna para – doktor medycyny Friedrich Ritter i jego kochanka Dore Strauch, następnie rodzina Wittmerów – Margrete w piątym miesiąc ciąży, jej mąż Heinz i syn Henry, a następnie baronowa Eloise Wagner de Bosquet wraz ze swoimi towarzyszami i jednocześnie najprawdopodobniej rywalizującymi kochankami. Książka opisuje zagadkowe zniknięcie ekstrawaganckiej arystokratki wraz z jednym z jej partnerów, poprzedzające je niesnaski i następujące po nim dramatyczne wydarzenia. Jednak jeśli czytelnik liczy na rozwiązanie zagadki, srodze się rozczaruje. Treherne nie idzie dalej niż reporterzy z lat 30-stych i nie udaje mu się podać definitywnego przebiegu wydarzeń. Udaje mu się za to w ciekawy sposób zbudować postaci, przytacza ciekawy i obszerny materiał źródłowy, chociaż wiele fragmentów czy listów się powtarza. Książka stanowi głównie uporządkowanie przebiegu wydarzeń na podstawie listów i wspomnień, i chronologiczne ich przedstawienie.

Kiedy entomolog pisze książkę

Irytował mnie trochę styl powieści, nieustanne wzmianki autora o zbliżającej się tragedii, która – gdy w końcu następuje – przechodzi w powieści w pewien sposób niezauważona. Punkt kulminacyjny rozmywa się, a wraz z nim sens reportażu. Niepotrzebny dramatyzm nie znalazł potwierdzenia w fabule. Natomiast to, co się Therne’owi udało, to opis spartańskich warunków życia na wulkanicznej wyspie, relacja z trudów jej zagospodarowania i ogromu włożonej w to pracy, surowości i nieubłagalności natury. Przyroda na Floreanie nie sprzyja człowiekowi, bywa kapryśna i groźna. Zaskakuje nieugiętość dawnych pionierów i podróżników, ich zacięcie i warunki, w których chcieli żyć. Przez dokładne ukazanie charakterów mieszkańców powieść staje się w pewien sposób odpychająca – oprócz rodziny Wittmerów pozostali osadnicy byli mieszanką co najmniej zaskakującą, barwną i trudną w odbiorze.

Ani zbrodni, ani raju

Dla mnie reportaż Johna Treberne mocno się zestarzał i jest napisany w przebrzmiałym stylu. Fabuła jest ciekawa i przypominała mi niektóre relacje podróżniczek z powieści Mii Kankimaki Kobiety, o których myślę nocą. Jednak tam bohaterki inspirowały do zagryzienia zębów i działania, tak tu bohaterowie zębów nie mają (Dore i Friedrich) i ma się ochotę uciec od nich jak najdalej. Ciekawa lektura, która jak dla mnie mogła być obszerniejszym artykułem w gazecie. Można sobie odpuścić.

Slightly outdated reportage

The article on the Wroclaw.pl website What to read during the summer? The most interesting books for the 2024 holidays (https://www.wroclaw.pl/kultura/co-czytac-latem-ksiazki-na-wakacje-2024-polecamy) is a clickbait that I have visited. That is how I came across John Treherne's book The Galapagos Affair and I managed to get it surprisingly quickly in the library and read it even faster. 250 pages is just a reading for two evenings.

20th-century idealistic travelers

The book brought me a few surprises. Firstly, it was written in 1983, so forty years ago. You can feel it in the style in which the book is written - it is a bit outdated. In addition, the author was not a professional writer, but an entomologist, a researcher of insects in various corners of the world. During one of his journeys, to the Galapagos, he heard an interesting story of a group of people who settled on the Ecuadorian island of Floreana in the 1920s and 1930s in different order. First, a strange couple arrived on the island – doctor of medicine Friedrich Ritter and his lover Dore Strauch, then the Wittmer family – Margrete in the fifth month of pregnancy, her husband Heinz and son Henry, and then Baroness Eloise Wagner de Bosquet with her companions and most likely rival lovers. The book describes the mysterious disappearance of an extravagant aristocrat and one of her partners, the preceding quarrels and the dramatic events that followed. However, if the reader expects the solution of this mystery, they will be sorely disappointed. Treherne goes no further than the reporters of the 1930s and fails to provide a definitive course of events. He manages to build characters in an interesting way, cites interesting and extensive source material, although many fragments or letters are repeated. The book is mainly an ordering of the course of events based on letters and memories, and their chronological presentation.

When an entomologist writes a book

I was a bit irritated by the style of the novel, the author's constant mentions of the approaching tragedy, which - when it finally happens - passes unnoticed. The climax fades away, and with it the sense of the reportage. Unnecessary drama was not confirmed in the plot. However, what Therne managed to do is describe the Spartan living conditions on the volcanic island, an account of the difficulties of its development and the enormous work put into it, the severity and inexorability of nature. It is particularly infriendly to humans on Floreana, it can be capricious and dangerous. The stubborness of the old pioneers and travelers, their determination and the conditions in which they wanted to live are surprising. The detailed portrayal of the inhabitants' characters makes the novel somewhat repulsive - apart from the Wittmer family, the other settlers were a mixture that was at least surprising, colourful and difficult to like.

Neither crime nor paradise

For me, John Treberne's report has aged badly and is written in a worn-out style. The plot is interesting and reminded me of some of the traveller accounts in Mia Kankimaki's novel Women I Think About at Night. However, the heroines there inspired us to grit our teeth and take action, while here the heroes literally have no teeth (Dore and Friedrich) and you want to run away from them as far as possible. An interesting read, which for me could have been a longer newspaper article. You can skip it.
