Psychologiczne mechanizmy sprawdzają się w thrillerze
Powieść francuskiego debiutanta Jerome’a Loubry’ego Schronienia to jeden z lepszych thrillerów, które czytałam. Podszyty sporą dawką psychologicznej wiedzy zapewnił mi wiele rozrywki i zgodnie z zapowiedziami – nie mogłam oderwać się od lektury. 350-stronicowa pozycja została połknięta w dwa dni w trakcie roboczego tygodnia!
Książka została wydana w Polsce w
2022, trzy lata po publikacji we Francji, nakładem wydawnictwa Stara szkoła. Do
tej pory czytałam tylko jedną powieść przez nich wydaną i miałam do niej spore
zastrzeżenia, więc podchodziłam do tej powieści ze sporym dystansem. Czekało
mnie jednak spore pozytywne zaskoczenie. Historia zaczyna się niczym klasyczny
kryminał – w 1949 roku Valerie, podczas spaceru z psem, odkrywa na plaży ciała
dzieci. W 1986 roku młoda dziennikarka Sandrine zaczyna pracę na prowincji, a
niedługo później dostaje informację o śmierci jej babki i jedzie na wybrzeże zapoznać
się z jej testamentem. Tak przynajmniej przedstawia się pierwsza część książki
zatytułowana Pierwszy znak nawigacyjny – Wyspa. Druga część zmienia
zasadniczo perspektywę i rozumienie powieści wraz z Drugim znakiem
nawigacyjnym – Królem olch. Wreszcie trzeci znak niemal doprowadza do wyjaśnienia
zagadki. Czytelnika czeka więc sporo niespodzianek i warstw tej samej historii.
Szczęśliwie Loubry, z poszanowaniem inteligencji czytelnika, doprowadza
historię do końca i z perspektywy wygląda ona tak samo dobrze jak na początku.
W powieści autor przedstawia
ciekawy mechanizm psychologiczny – uwaga spojler! – polegający na budowaniu
sobie alternatywnej rzeczywistości, w której straumatyzowany umysł mógłby się
schronić. Doświadczony psychiatra, rozgryzając historię ofiary, szuka właśnie
znaków nawigacyjnych, które mogłyby mu pomóc dojść do tego, co się naprawdę
stało. Wypatruje elementów niepasujących do opowiadanej wersji wydarzeń, wystających
z danej narracji, zakotwiczonych w alternatywnej rzeczywistości. Pewien aspekt
poznawczy zatem jest.
Podobała mi się powieść Loubry’ego
– jej zagadkowa wielowarstwowość, przedstawienie wydarzeń w odwróconym, krzywym
zwierciadle. Miała wiele momentów jak z horroru, kiedy ciarki chodziły mi po
plecach, bardzo filmowo pokazanych. Miała również sporo odniesień do literatury,
a szczególną uwagę poświęcono wierszowi „Król Olch” Johanna Wolfganga Goethego.
Nie mogę zbyt wiele napisać o bohaterach, by nie ujawnić zbyt wiele fabuły, ale
mamy policjanta prowadzącego śledztwo, inspektora Boucharda, dotkniętego zresztą
osobistą tragedią (jego córka zaginęła wiele lat wcześniej), oraz ofiarę
przemocy seksualnej, której przeszłość pozostaje zagadką. Samo wydanie nie porywa – jest w nim
kilka literówek, a design okładki nie odnosi się do treści książki. Stara
szkoła do ulubionych wydawców nie dołączy. Niemniej jednak warto sięgnąć po
powieść Loubry’ego i zanurzyć się w warstwowym świecie znikających dzieci,
porwań i znaków nawigacyjnych – naprawdę trzyma w napięciu. To po prostu
sprawnie napisana rozrywka.

Psychologicl mechanisms running
a thriller
The novel by French debutant Jérôme
Loubry, The Refuge, is one of the best thrillers I've read (not that I have
read many). With a generous dose of psychological knowledge, it provided me
with a lot of entertainment and, as promised in numerous reviews, I couldn't
tear myself away from it. The 350-page book was devoured in two days during a
working week!
The book was published in Poland
in 2022, three years after its publication in France, by Stara Szkoła
Publishing House. So far, I've only read one novel published by this publisher
and I had serious reservations about it, so I approached this novel with
considerable reserve. However, I was in for a big positive surprise. The story
begins like a classic crime story - in 1949, Valerie, while walking her dog,
discovers the bodies of children on the beach. Years later, in 1986, a young
journalist, Sandrine, starts working in the province, and shortly afterwards
receives information about her grandmother's death and goes to the coast to
read her will. At least that is how the first part of the book, entitled The
First Navigation Mark – The Island, presents itself. The second part
fundamentally changes the perspective and understanding of the novel with The
Second Navigation Mark – The Alder King. Finally, the third mark almost
leads to the explanation of the mystery. The reader is therefore in for a lot
of surprises and layers of the same story. Fortunately, Loubry, respecting the
reader's intelligence, brings the story to an end and from a perspective it
looks just as good as it did at the beginning.
In the novel, the author presents
an interesting psychological mechanism – spoiler alert! – consisting in
building an alternative reality in which the traumatized mind could take
refuge. An experienced psychiatrist, figuring out the victim's story, is looking
for navigation marks that could help him figure out what really happened. He
looks for elements that do not fit the told version of events, sticking out of
a given narrative, anchored in an alternative reality. So there is a certain
cognitive aspect.
I liked Loubry's novel – its
mysterious multi-layered nature, the presentation of events in an inverted,
distorting mirror. It had many moments like from a horror movie, when I got
chills down my spine, presented in a very cinematic way. It also had a lot of
references to literature, and special attention was paid to the poem "The
Alder King" by Johann Wolfgang Goethe. I can't write too much about the
characters so as not to reveal too much of the plot, but we have a policeman
conducting an investigation, Inspector Bouchard, who is also affected by a
personal tragedy (his daughter disappeared many years earlier), and a victim of
sexual violence whose past remains a mystery. The edition itself is not impressive – it
has a few typos, and the cover design does not refer to the content of the
book. Old School will not join the favorite publishers. Nevertheless, it is
worth reaching for Loubry's novel and immersing yourself in the layered world
of disappearing children, kidnappings and navigation signs - it really keeps
you in suspense. It is simply skillfully written entertainment.
