Reportaż o Polkach wyjeżdżających do Niemiec do opieki nad osobami starszymi

Opublikowana w 2017 roku książka wywołała spore poruszenie, zwłaszcza w środowisku Betrojerinek. Betrojerinki. Reportaże o pracy opiekuńczej i (bez)nadziei była tam wielokrotnie pożyczana i czytana i ma wiele podkreśleń.

Niedosyt

We mnie książka wywołała mniejsze emocje. Przede wszystkim - była za krótka. Niecałe 180 stron czyta się w jeden wieczór, zwłaszcza, że rozdziały przeplatane są autentycznymi ogłoszeniami ofert pracy w Niemczech, co dodaje nieco sztucznej objętości. Z drugiej strony - czy więcej historii zmieniłoby jakoś moje postrzeganie sytuacji polskich opiekunek pracujących za naszą zachodnią granicą? Raczej nie. A jednak nie mogę się oprzeć wrażeniu, że autorce coś umyka. Jej opisy są zbyt suche, rzeczowe, nie udało się uchwycić poszczególnych osób i sprawić, żeby zapadły w pamięć. Zabrakło szerszego opisu sytuacji życiowej, dlatego kobiety opisane w książce są przede wszystkim opiekunkami, a dopiero na drugim miejscu kobietami.

Wiele osób - wiele motywacji

Udało się na pewno pokazać wielowymiarowość takiej pracy - rozpoczęta jako przymus często otwiera drzwi do nowego, lepszego świata, zapewnia pracującym w Niemczech kobietom chociaż minimum niezależności i samodzielności. Ratuje z sytuacji, gdy w Polsce ciężko o pracę lub wynagrodzenie jest za niskie, a sytuacja w domu wymaga spłaty długów lub inwestycji, nie wspominając już o przemocy domowej.

Status prawny opiekunki i składki emerytalne

Sporo pracy włożyła również autorka w rozważania o statusie prawnym Betrojerinek, co akurat dla mnie było zbyt szczegółowe i nużące. Mam jednak poczucie, że głównym odbiorcą książki są właśnie opiekunki pracujące w Niemczech, a publikacja ma pomóc im się zorganizować i walczyć o swoje prawa. To już coś.

Jak dla mnie jednak - pozostał niedosyt. Duży i ważny temat został tylko "liźnięty", ale nie zgłębiony.

Moja ocena: 6/10.

A reportage about Polish women working in Germany with the elderly people

The book published in 2017 caused quite a stir, especially in the very environment it describes, namely the Polish women working in Germany and taking care for the German elderly people. Since the German word for such care is betreuen - take care of, those women are called the Betreuerinnen, or Polish Pearls (die polnische Perlen) or Polish Angels. Betreuerinnen. Reportage on caretaking and hope(lessness) were repeatedly borrowed and read there and various fragments have been underlined.

This proves that such a book was needed and awaited. This is not surprising, considering that this situation concerns ca. 500 thousand Polish women. The data is not very precise, as many of them work illegally. The stir arises from the fact that Poland has been severely damaged during the World War II by the Nazi Germany, and the fact that Polish women are now 'wiping German asses' - as many people perceive it - sounds like a viscous giggle of the history. Since the legislative situation of those workers is complex (working in one country and paying taxes in the other), many job agencies abuse their employees, making them work nearly 24/7. The working conditions vary from house to house and those less assertive end up also as house cleaners and nurses. Women have to give up part of their lives (as they are going there for a shift that lasts weeks or even months) and return home for unpaid vacation. The money to be earned - approximately 1000-1200 EUR per month - is significantly more than what could be earned in Poland at the same time. And first and foremost - job in Germany is easy to get as compared with job offers in Poland, especially that women working there are usually forty and upwards, and not considered attractive on the local job market. So in some cases, there is really no choice.

The lack

I took this book less emotionally. First of all - for me it was too short. Less than 180 pages is a read for one evening, especially since the chapters are interspersed with authentic job offers in Germany, which adds a bit of artificial volume. On the other hand, would more stories change my perception of the situation of Polish carers working behind our western border? Probably not. And yet I can not resist the impression that the author is missing something. Her descriptions are too dry, matter-of-factly, and the individuals have not been portrayed in a memorable way. There is no wider description of their life situation, that is why the women described in the book are first and foremost caretakers, and women on the second place.

Many people - many reasons for labour migration 

It was certainly possible to show the multidimensional nature of such work - started as coercion often opens the door to a new, better world, ensures that women working in Germany have at least a minimum of autonomy and independence. It is a rescue from a demanding job market in Poland, especially in smaller cities, and indispensable help when the situation at home requires paying off debts or unforeseen investments, not to mention domestic violence.

Legal status of a caretakers and pension contributions

A huge amount of research has been put into the legal status of the Betreuerinnen, which was a bit too detailed and tedious for me. However, I have a feeling that the main recipients of the book are the caretakers working in Germany, and the publication is meant to help them organize and fight for their rights. That's something.

This book has left me dissatisfied. Such a big and important topic has by no means been exhausted. I would treat it more as a signal of a complex social problem and phenomenon, rather than a complete analysis of a problem.
