Jest w nim wszystko, co w norweskim kryminale najlepsze - zmęczony policjant, odludne tajemnicze miejsce, tajemnica z przeszłości i sypiący gęsto śnieg. Na trwające właśnie zbyt długie wieczory - pozycja jak znalazł.
Norweski kryminał w najlepszym wydaniu
Ciężko mi będzie spamiętać, co w książce Horsta podobało mi się najbardziej. Mamy tu do czynienia z doświadczonym śledczym Williamem Wistingiem, który wspomina początki swojej kariery w policji. Jest śledztwo powiązane z napadem na bank, jest próba ujęcia złodzieja samochodów, ale jest również przypadkowa sprawa starego auta ukrytego w stodole, które ma na karoserii ślady kul wskazujące, że kierowca zginął na miejscu. W domu kwilą niedawno urodzone bliźnięta, a żona ambitnego i niedosypiającego gliny, Ingrid, wykazuje się nie tylko anielską cierpliwością, ale również ogromnym zrozumieniem dla wymagającej pracy swojego męża. Wszystkie wątki toczą się jednocześnie, co oddaje specyfikę pracy w policji. Są nocne dyżury, wyjazdy do wypadków, wieczne zmęczenie i mozół pracy.
"W pracy policjanta człowiek wciąż stykał się z tym, co negatywne, chore, destrukcyjne, odbiegające od normy. Ale Wisting pod wieloma względami czuł się w tym mroku dobrze." s. 28
Horst potrafi pisać o tym jasno i klarownie, jednocześnie budując nastrój i podążając wraz z czytelnikami za rozwijającym się tropem śledztwa. Jego głęboka znajomość tematu i realizm opisów wynika z jego policyjnego doświadczenia (do 2013 roku był szefem wydziału śledczego okręgu policji w Vestfold) oraz ukończonym studiom z psychologii i kryminologii. Nie ma przekombinowania fabuły, nie ma niepotrzebnych dłużyzn - akcja toczy się wartko, a jednocześnie oddany jest mozół śledztwa, wielość godzin spęczonych na poszukiwaniach śladów i zniechęcająca biurokracja. Nic dodać, nic ująć. Poszukiwanie kolejnych tomów rozpoczęte!

Norwegian detective story at its best
It will be hard for me to point down what I liked most about Horst's book. We follow an experienced investigator William Wisting remembering the beginning of his career in the police force. There is an ongoing investigation related to a bank robbery, as well as an attempt to capture a car thief, but most importantly there is also a random case of an old car hidden in a barn, bering traces of bullets on the body indicating that the driver was killed on the spot. At home, newly born twins await their father, as well as angelically patient wife Ingrid, who shows great understanding of her husband's demanding occupation. All threads run simultaneously, which reflects the specifics of working in the police. There are night shifts, calls to various accidents, eternal fatigue and hard work.

Horst is able to write concisely and clearly about this, at the same time building the mood and following the development of the investigation with his readers. His deep knowledge of the subject and the realism of the descriptions is due to his police experience (until 2013 he was the head of the investigating department of the Vestfold police district) and completed psychology and criminology studies. There is no recombination of the plot, no unnecessary verbosity - the action takes place rapidly, and at the same time is devoted to the hassle of the investigation, the number of hours spent on searching for traces and discouraging bureaucracy.
