Agatha Christie N czy M?

Agatha Christie przejmuje kontrolę nad blogiem:)
Znów kolejny sprawnie napisany kryminał na jeden wieczór. Tym razem nieco inny - nie szukamy mordercy, a zdrajcy ojczyzny. Akcja powieści, osadzona w latach 40-tych, pokazuje poszukiwania agenta Piątej Kolumny, szpiega w Anglii, który wspiera Adolfa Hitlera i inwazję na Wielką Brytanię.
Początkowo akcja toczy się niespiesznie - podstarzałe małżeństwo, Tomasz i Tuppence Beresford, są bardzo rozczarowani, że nie mogą brać czynnego udziału w obronie ojczyzny. Tomaszowi zostaje wkrótce zlecona tajna misja, o której ma nie wiedzieć jego żona, ona jednak podsłuchuje rozmowę i czeka w miejscu docelowym, w malutkim miasteczku Leahampton, w pensjonacie Sans sousi. Mąż jest zaskoczony, ale również bardzo dumny ze swojej żony. Głównymi podejrzanymi są pensjonariusze zamieszkujący pensjonat, wliczając właścicielkę, panią Perennę, oraz jej córkę, Sheilę Perennę. Pozostali to:

• Karol von Deinim - młody Niemiec, skrywający dodatkową tajemnicę;
• major Bletchley - emerytowany angielski wojskowy;
• pani O'Rourke - bardzo wysoka, potężnej budowy, budząca grozę; pani Tuppence często mówi, że Irlandka napawa ją nieuzasadnionym lękiem;
• pani Minton - starsza pani, z oddaniem robiąca na drutach;
• pani Sprot - młoda kobieta, której mąż kazał schronić się na wsi wraz z córeczką Betty;
• państwo Cayley - marudny mąż i oddana mu, całkowicie na nim skupiona żona;

Przez powieść przewijają się również inne postaci, nie mniej ważne. Tym razem wskazówki dawane przez Christie, chociaż tylko wzmiankowane, są tak jasne, że prowadzą czytelnika do rozwiązania zagadki (choć nie we wszystkich jej odnogach).

Gdybym miała podsumować ten kryminał jednym słowem: czarujący. Urzekł mnie kompletnie. Może dlatego, że Tomasz, który miał być głównym bohaterem książki, wkrótce oddaje pola dobrodusznej i bardzo przenikliwej żonie? To ona, z iście kobiecym instynktem, prowadzi czytelnika do rozwiązania. Jest odważna i szlachetna, ale też pokazuje targające nią emocje. Po drugie - pięknie pokazane jest starsze, kochające się i rozumiejące bez słów małżeństwo, które wiedzie życie tak ciekawe i zaskakujące, że nawet ich własne dzieci - Deborah i Derek - nie zdają sobie z niego sprawy i traktują swoich "staruszków" nieco pobłażliwie.

Po trzecie wreszcie - nieśpieszny rytm, letni urok małej wypoczynkowej miejscowości z widokiem na morze, ograniczona liczba podejrzanych - czyta się książkę niespiesznie, a z drugiej strony z natężoną uwagą i ogromną podejrzliwością. Wydaje mi się, że Christie bezbłędnie uchwyciła atmosferę tamtych lat, a książka, opublikowana w 1941 roku, do dziś potrafi tą atmosferę przekazać.

Powiedziałabym, że N czy M? podobało mi się bardziej niż najgłośniejsze powieści Christie i z niecierpliwością będę śledzić inne losy nietuzinkowego małżeństwa Beresfordów. Takich powieści jest jeszcze 4, dwie opublikowane wcześniej, dwie później:

• Tajemniczy przeciwnik – 1922.
• Śledztwo na cztery ręce – 1929
• Dom nad kanałem – 1968
• Tajemnica Wawrzynów – 1973

Czy i w pozostałych czterech małżeństwo Beresfordów zachwyca ciepłem, poczuciem humoru i przenikliwością? Na pewno się przekonam. A tymczasem - serdecznie polecam!

Agatha Christie is taking control of my blog:) N OR M? this time.
Yet another well-written detective novel for one evening. This time slightly different though - we are not looking for a murderer, but for a traitor of the homeland. The plot, put in 40-ies, depicts a search for an agent of the Fifth Column, a spy sent to England, serving Adolf Hitler and supporting the nazi-invasion on the United Kingdom. 
At first, the plot unrolls slowly - the elderly couple, Thomas and Tuppence Beresford, are a bit disappointed that they are not allowed to actively defend their country. Soon Thomas is given a secret mission from which his wife is supposedly excluded. Having her head where it's supposed to be, Tuppence eavesdrops the whole conversation and awaits her suprised - but very proud - husband at the secret location, a small town called Leahampton, in a guest house Sans souci. The main suspects are the residents of the house, including its owner, Madam Perenne, and her daughter, Mademosielle Sheila Perenna. The others are: 

• Karol von Deinim - a young man from Germany, who hides an additional secret;
• major Bletchley - a retired English man of army;
• Madam O'Rourke - a very tall and well-built Irish woman; Tuppence refers to her as fear-inflicting;
• Madam Minton - elderly lady, very keen on knitting;
• Madam Sprot - a young woman sent to province for security, with her daughter Betty;
• Mr and Mts Cayley - a moaning husband and completely devoted wife;

There are also other characters, equally important. This time the clues given by Christie will lead the careful reader directly to the solution of the secret (but not on all of the levels). 

If I was to summarize the novel in one word I would choose charming. I've been completely seduced. Perhaps because Thomas, who was supposed to be the main protagonist, soon hands this role to his inquisitive and good-willed wife? It is no other than her that leads us to the solution of the story, with a womanly instinct. She is brave and noble, but also deeply human, with all sorts of emotions taking over. 

Secondly, we have a depiction of a long-married couple, that still loves and respects each other and leads a life nobody - not even their children Deborah and Derek - suspects them of. 

Last but not least - the slow pace of the novel, the summer charm of a small holiday venue with a breathtaking view on the sea, a limited number of suspects - it is a leasurable read, but at the same time keeps our attention sharp. I believe that Christie has caught the uneasy atmosphere of those years perfectly, and the book, published 1941, can still reproduce it. 

I'd say that N OR M? was a better read for me than other, more famous, novels of Christie, and I will follow the adventures of the fearless Beresford couple closely and impatiently. There are four other books starring the lively marriage, two written way sooner, and two some time later: 

• The Secret Adversary – 1922.
• Partners in Crime – 1929
• By the Pricking of my Thumbs – 1968
• Postern of Fate – 1973

Will the rest of them mesmerize me with the warmth, sense of humour and insight od the Beresford couple? I will definately check this out. And for now - I strongly recommend N OR M?
